      I'm humbled beyond belief because I feel like I got so much more than I could ever give. In spite of all the great places I've been and seen, the best part of all is right here in these comments from those who followed along. That is what I will remember and cherish the most. Thanks Half Mile.

      Rabid Rabbit The time you took to share such a wonderful experience and with such humility wit and even a dry sense of humor made the ride along one that I will take over and over....I am 69 and have backpacked since 1971....knees have headed south so my trips are just a distance vapor floating around in my head....but with your time and effort that you put into this is one that will keep me smiling for many a winter's day....and I now know what it is meant to be a "rabid" rabbit...lol...what a great trail name....you love hiking so much you became rabid....how cool...yes us old guys can be cool...Man I can not thank you enough .....Half Mile....lol..."How much farther is it ?"....and my standard response....only a half mile more....lol....like Danial Boone ...I never was lost, but sure was bewildered a few times....

      @@halfmile4325 that's great! OK, the "rabid" thing: Really, this isn't a true trail name but rather an name I used for a fantasy football team. I had used the name on some blogs previously and my daughter warned that it would cause confusion if I switched. In reality, a group I ran into on my second day christened me "One-liner" though I won't go into the reasons for that. Now, after I finally quit shaving a couple of months into the hike, sure enough, the area around my mouth took on quite the foamy appearance and I deemed the name more appropriate.

    Your journey from your very 1st video to this one here, shows a man that has not only fulfilled his own expectations, but shown others (like me) that their own journey is right there waiting for them.
    Thank you

    • @RabidRabbit
      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Mg. I admit that I had no real expectations when I started. I did my best to avoid thinking too far down the trail. Looking back, I wonder how I could have gone that far but as someone below pointed out, I just did one day hike each day and before you know it, I was a long way down the trail. Most people can do this if they don't talk themselves out of it. For most of us, the mental part is the toughest because it is always easy to find reasons to quit. Honestly, I mentally quit several times but as often as not it was the support I received right here on this channel that kept me going. You guys were quite the inspiration, always there just when I needed it. Thanks.

    You are an inspiration. I was following along at the beginning of your journey and somehow the posts stopped coming into my YT feed. I had wondered a few times over the years if you ever completed the PCT and then so happy to have had your final video stumble back into my feed....congratulations 4 years belated! I'm a handful of years from retirement and lets just say the PCT may just be an itch I have to scratch!

      You have got me thinking about doing the PCT myself since it is in my backyard here in Northern California. Maybe as sections hikes like your friends Doggone and Extra Credit did (or maybe something more, depending on the Missus :)). Having lived in Washington State for many years, I can tell you that the hiking is beautiful, but the season is short in the high country. You should do Washington again from the Canadian border heading southbound. If your started in July, you would enjoy good weather (well, mostly; it still rains in summer, too. Then you could take in all the views you missed on your NB hike. And try Olympic National Park, one of my favorite places to hike on planet earth.

    • @RabidRabbit
      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't matter whether you do it in sections or as a thru-hike, just do it! You guys are lucky to have such wonderful wilderness areas.
      I like the idea of hiking Washington SB but I'll probably take on something else first.

    Congratulations. You must be happy you don't have to walk home. This trip must mean a whole lot more than if you had done it 30 years ago. Looks like you made some real friends. Again congrats.

    • @RabidRabbit
      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha, I actually at one point did think about walking home. Nowadays, when somebody asks me a question like, "how far is it to San Diego?", I just say: "it's walking distance!" Doing the trip 30 years ago was out of the question for me. Unlike a lot of the youngsters I met on the trail, my priorities were around raising a family and building a career so now I'm trying to do the things I couldn't. The advantage is that money and time aren't such a big deal now.
      I made a lot of friends on the trail but honestly, some of the best are right here on this vlogs. You guys with your comments kept me going when I might have otherwise quit. Now, its mission accomplished and you guys all had a part in that.

      Mostly I just shot raw footage and then sent that back to my editor/publisher but she wasn't able to finish so I did the last ten or so videos myself. Editing that, I learned a lot that I wish I had known when I was shooting. The next time around, if there is one, I promise will have been videography. Still, it is amazing what you can do with a good editing software.
      Ironically, we had a documentary team stay at our house during Sundance. Their film had been selected. With all of that talent, I couldn't bring myself to ask for tips but it was tempting.
      Anyway, thanks for the kind words and I'm glad that you enjoyed the trip.

    Hey Raymond Rabbit: Congrats to finishing your epic journey and thank you so much for taking us along with you. I learned a lot from your trail adventures and I hope to section hike the PCT over the years to come. As mentioned in a past post, next time I am in P.C. visiting my brother I want to get together with you for a couple of beers with you. I have your cel # and will text you way ahead of time. Any plans for your next trail adventure in the future? Thanks again for all your hard work on the trail and thanks for entertaining us. Jeff.

      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd love to see you Jeffrey. There are a few followers that live "in walking distance" and I've always thought it'd be great to get a group together and maybe even do a short hike. Or, as you suggested, just grab a beer and shoot the breeze.
      Good luck with your section hikes. Looking back, being able to choose the best time to hike and taking the time to enjoy the trail may have been the way to go.

  • @jeffreyrule8143
    @jeffreyrule8143 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Raymond:
    Thank you so much for responding to my inquiry on the Big Agnes Copper Super tent. I need to look at lightening my load by either changing my Gregory Baltoro 65 liter pack or my Rei Qtr. Dome 2 tent to lighter versions. Were you happy with your ULA backpack? How did the bear canister fit inside your pack? You have any upcoming hiking adventures or did your wife ground you for a while? Sorry for all the questions.
    Jeff

    • @RabidRabbit
      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for weight, if money isn’t a big deal, change the tent and backpack. I liked my ULA Circuit but I had back pain and changed to s Dueter. It didn’t help much and the real problem was likely my condition. I liked the space in the Dueter but not the accessibility to water. If you like using a bladder, either are OK but for my style the ULA was a better choice.
      The bear canister rode fine on top of the ULA but did fall out once or twice.
      My wife is looking forward to me getting out of her hair. Nah, really she just supports whatever I want to do.

      Thanks for sharing the adventure Rondelle. I'm not sure what comes next or when but I'm starting to get itchy - it could be the delayed onset of poison ivy. Stay tuned and lets see what comes up. The AT?

    Congrats on a strong finish. Your day hike lasted all summer long.

      hahaha. Yes, it was just a series of day hikes, wasn't it. Its funny because that is more or less the way I remember it too. Just get up, hike, and go to bed and then start all over the next day. I always avoided looking too far ahead or committing to a specific distance in a day...just hike.
      Thanks for staying with me Susie. It was nice to hear from you from time to time.

      Thanks Sailor. Are you the Sailor I hiked with near Park City, Alfredo's wife?

    • @kcouche
      @kcouche 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the same. I'm the West Coast one, who just got rid of his boat, but still measures things the old fashioned ways. And glad to sea a youngster do the PCT...gotta try it myself. But too much about me...you're the point. You hopped from MX to CAN, and you got the video's out to prove it. The PCT or I shoot my age...which comes first?

      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sailor ha! My other Sailor friend also had a boat and she and her husband met each other on a pacific atoll, sailing around the world.
      Golf or hiking, hmmm. Unless you have the game of your life, the hike will be more memorable.

      Golf and hiking are both good exercise, and while a good hike is expansive in nature, a round of golf is more like a closed course hike. One in which your little movements make all the difference- the western martial art. I can lose a ball in golf so easily, but I've always dreamed of doing real hike and whacking the ball along, but ball loss would be prohibitive. We did invent a redwood forest trail frisbee course 50 years ago that worked pretty well...Maybe the PCT with a frisbee...?

      Oh wow Darla, I haven't made any plans just yet but making these last videos is bringing on waves of nostalgia. I'd kind of like to do the AT but the problem with that is that I'd then have to do the CDT as well and I'm not yet comfortable being away from home that long. But who knows. You guys make me want to keep going so we'll see. Thanks for hanging with me for the distance.

      Thanks for the kind words Traky. No, quite honestly I had no expectations when I started. In my first video from the trail, I explained that my approach was going to be to treat each day as a separate day hike and see how many I could string together. I was sure that I would get to Lake Morena which is 20 miles down the trail because I knew that I could hike at least 10 miles and after that, it would be easier to go on to Lake Morena than it would be to turn back.
      I'm not sure what is up next but I'm thinking about it. It's great to see the wife but I sense she may be missing having me on the trail. Keep your eyes open and we'll see what happens.

    Hey Raymond:
    Now that your done with the PCT were you happy with your choice of the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 person tent? If you had a chance to hike it again would you still use a freestanding tent versus a super light ZPak Duplex, that sets up with hiking poles? I currently backpack with REI Quarter Dome tent similar to you Copper Spur. I love it, but would like to reduce my base weight. Was having doors a great option or could you have gotten along fine with one door? Any response would be much appreciated.
    Thank you, Jeff

      Great to hear from you Jeff and interesting that you should ask that question. I’ll give you the long answer.
      Yes, I was very happy with the CSIi. The only wear it suffered was due to stupidity. I mildly flared the end of one part of tent pole because I didn’t get it fully inserted before flexing it. It didn’t cause a problem but could have. I also had a varmint chew a tiny hole in it but again it wasn’t a problem.
      I avoided most rain but it did get wet a couple of times and then I just laid it out to dry at stops but there was extra water weight when that happened. Overall, it was everything I’d hoped for.
      Recently, I have been comparing the Zpacks Duplex. It also has two doors, a feature I do like very much. It seems durable and of course lighter. The biggest concern I’ve heard is condensation but it is an issue to some degree with most tents and it seems that it is manageable if you carefully plan the pitch.
      My usual cop out is that you won’t be disappointed with either. It’s a question of whether you want to pay a couple of hundred extra to carry a pound or two less for 2,662 miles. If money isn’t a big deal, why not?
      Good luck and let me know what you choose and your thoughts.

      Hey Mike, good to hear from you. I haven’t done a lot of hiking lately but I must say, the adventure bug is starting to bite again. I recently took trip to Egypt and have an upcoming cruise with the big boss (aka wife) in a month. Then I’m thinking maybe the AT, or hiking to the Everest base camp, or maybe Patagonia. I’m feeling good and I’m ready for something big but need to figure out what that will be. Great to hear from you.

      @@RabidRabbit I'm really glad to hear you are good. I love your spirit. You are real and upbeat.
      Good for you spending time with your wife. I find that hard to do at times due to busy schedules with my 4 boys.
      Keep enjoying life.

    So it took 6 months to complete, did you walk 145 days and zero 35 days?

    • @RabidRabbit
      @RabidRabbit  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, more or less. I've not really checked the accuracy of the math but it should be close. I had a couple of extended zeros. The first was when I arrived at Kennedy Meadows on May 1 and took off until May 18th while my wife took a trip to New York and I planned how to flip north of the Sierra until the snow melt was further along. The second time got off the trail for an extended period was in Etna CA, when I flew to southern California to help my son move to Arizona. That was about 10 days. Otherwise I took off 1-3 days at different times for different reasons, usually when I would visit with family along the trail.
      All in all, I was quite pleased with the mix. If I had it to do again, I would probably avoid the longer periods off (but life happens) and maybe take it a little easier. I was a bit in a hurry, trying to make sure that I completed the hike but knowing now that I could, I would have liked to stop and smell a few more flowers, talk to other people more, just enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
      Thanks for your comments.

      Hi Fred! Sorry for not getting back sooner. I have had a lot going on but not much hiking. I’ve had lots of guests st my house, traveled to Egypt in December and took a cruise in February. But with the hiking season starting, I’m anxious to go. Next year may be another big hiking year.
      How about you? Anything happening?

      Oh wow!! You have been busy!! Sounds like you have had a great time! Egypt! Wow! Let me share briefly about myself. I am a retiring law-enforcement officer who loves hiking. You have been an amazing encouragement to me personally as you show that those of us in our later years can enjoy the thought of thru hiking! I am planning a PCT through hike in 2023, four months after I retire. I will be 62 years old at that time. I am planning on vlogging here soon showing my preparation and interviewing those not only helping me physically and technically, but those around our age who have thru hiked and those desiring to. It was so great having followed you and your journey! I so enjoyed how you engaged your subscribers! I live in California by the PCT at Boreal and Highway 80. Headed out today to buy snow shoes so I can practice at Castle Peak getting some elevation in! Please, let’s keep in contact! I am looking for a few older men who might be willing to prepare physically for such a journey and vlog with us. Would love to learn from your insight and experience. Have an awesome day R.R. and thank you for connecting.~ with great respect, ~Trail Head Fred 😊
