- Yosemite mountain lion appears to be treed by two coyotes. In fact what is going on is a mother mountain lion is distracting the coyotes from her two cubs. The mother mountain lion and her cubs were feeding on a deer in the Ahwahnee Meadow when the coyotes arrived on the scent.
I love when you first spot the mountain lion and mutter under your breath the most genuine “shit..” I’ve ever heard. That must have been one of the most intense adrenaline pumping moments you could experience.
love how the lion just leapt into that gnarly old tree, and down, with no effort. and tight rope walked that chain link fence!

Because she was protecting her two cubs that she hid prior to this wild goose chase. The point was to protect her cubs with this distraction.
As someone who worked in the Park for 20 years, 10 of those living on the Valley Floor, I also never saw anything like this although those coyotes LOVE the Ahwahnee Meadow, major hangout especially on full moon nights!
That was nice of her. The mountain lion was actually less annoying than the two coyotes.
Amazing footage. Makes you realise just how truly wild Yosemite really is, and dangerous. Hope that you had more protection than just a camera. I suppose that the Park Ranger's wouldn't like it if people took rifles for protection into the park. I was worried about you for a while there, fortunately they were too busy with each other than worry about you. Also I suppose that they're somewhat used to people? I'm in Australia and our wildlife is somewhat different :)
Very intriguing, this video. She knows what she is doing. She is dealing with three threats, the two coyotes and the human camera man, distracting you all from her cubs. You can see how she is constantly calculating. She is running this show. That is why she is so calm.

This great video just increases my admiration and respect for these highly intelligent, elusive, classically very shy, and super gorgeous, highly athletic cats. Just like this mother cat, cougars are so stately and smart, she was cleverly distracting the coyotes to protect her little cubs. All big cats make great moms.
That is quite a scene to just walk up on.

So there I stood, cup of coffee in one hand and a croissant in the other meandering towards the coyote sound. Fortunately I had a fanny pack that I take with me backpacking with an old camera in it . and the rest is history. Later a Ranger hunted me down when he heard I had video. They require visual evidence to close areas because of mountain lion sightings. He told me that in his 30 years of being in the part he had never come close to seeing anything like what I walked upon.

3/3 The Ranger also told me that the whole drama was the mother lions way of taking the coyotes off the trail of her two hidden cubs who, with the mother lion, were feeding since about 3am on a deer kill in the Ahwahnee meadow. I was just too mesmerized by the encounter to do the smart thing and get out. Put some of my video on TH-cam here at the recommendation of the bartender at the Ahwahnee.

That was incredible. 2 coyotes!! If it were 1 might have been different, but cats are smart, they don't want a fight w/ an animal with teeth, if can avoid. If it's female, and not sure it is, she's guarding and diverting. It is big!! And Beautiful!!

It is interesting to watch how the mountain lion avoids confrontation because an injury could spell the end. A leopard on the other hand would have made a quick meal of a lone coyote.

ziska dor yeah because they sit around with a calculator and play odds all day... I was born not far north of here and lived in these mnt's all my life and if they are just slightly hungry they will go after a lot of animals. about 60 miles north of here so really in the daily hunting zone for this cat, One jumped a fence and killed two rots before the owner could get to his window. They will kill and eat their own. some cats will be cool but most attack because this area is getting over populated.
***** Actually they do, because unlike pack hunting species such as wolves cats are solitary hunters and cant afford to get injured. If a pack hunter gets injured it can rely on the pack for food and such until it heals and gets better or dies. Cat species usually weigh the benefit vs the potential for injury, now if the area is over populated then the species might have to resort to drastic measures.

I mean the Mountain Lion is probably annoyed that the Coyotes are making such a ruckus because being stealthy is one of their main hunting styles and the Coyotes aren't really aggressive towards humans but damn you're close as hell being there. I think I have a sense of how rare an event this was, but recognized that being there was flat ass dumb luck. I had just returned the day before from a ten day solo backpack trip in the high camp areas of Yosemite. My wife drove up to meet me at the Ahwahnee for a couple of days following my walk. This video was taken adjacent to the Ahwahnee meadow when I rose early for a walk. I was drawn by the strange yelping of the coyote.......

@@2dogarageoxo yeah in my mind you earn those moments, i have grown up with hunting, so i have been out in Nature almost half my life, and i have seen some amazing things that i only have seen once, but that is what makes it so amazing, so often i don't shoot, i just look, i can share those moments with my Dad(my mom don't see it as such a wild thing, but my dad do) and some close friends, sadly other than that, most people don't think it's such an amazing moment as me, a lot of people have a bad connection to Nature, i think it's a shame.
Sounds like alifetime experience if your still living the lifestyle i am cerious what your survival plan is out there for stuff like this and other predators that might want to make you avictim

@RollinRat Unfortunately, you don't know where their kittens or dead prey might be. There have been many attacks on adults who have been preyed on by these big cats and unfortunately, it's becoming more and more common, just like with bear attacks.

Holy s**t man. I live in the woods 6 days out of 7. I look for Coyotes and mountain lions nearly 100% of my life. This is one of the rarest videos I've ever seen. I don't know how I never seen this before, but it is one of the luckiest things any human has ever seen. Thank you for having a camera when you seen this. This is what wildlife documentaries would look like if they weren't "faked" or "only common things".

Amazing video! What a very rare moment you caught. Mad respect for your courage to capture it on video while close to the action. The scariest part for you was probably when the mountain lion and coyotes were no longer exclusively focused on each other and started to notice you!

Crazy, Ahwahnee Meadow is surrounded by humans, residences, the Ahwahnee Hotel, cars and traffic, etc.
Mama lion won't chance getting injured with cubs to take care of, but that'd have been a very bad day for those yotes had they actually gone after her cubs. Coyote is no match whatsoever for a cougar.

It's amazing how no one reads the description. The puma was simply leading the coyotes away from her Cubs which were feeding on a deer with her when the coyotes appeared. Dude has huge balls though.
If I have huge balls, they must be compensation for a small brain. Filming that thing was just about the stupidest and most reckless thing I have done in my life. (I have 45 minutes of tape!). But it was an amazing experience. And I would do it again in an instant. Thank you for your comment.

I always found it interesting that, despite some wild animal attacks on humans, the majority of these predatory animals generally leave humans alone unless they're desperate. For example, those coyotes were willing to take on that mountain lion that more than likely would've torn them up, but they didn't perceive the human as a threat at all. Didn't even approach the guy recording.

The guy filming mentioned that he's surprised the Mountain Lion is afraid of the Coyote's... It's not that the Mountain Lion is afraid of the coyote's...It's that Mountain Lions like to be stealthy, and they can't stand it when Coyote's are around ,because when they see a Mountain Lion , They start barking loudly, and inform all of the forest that the Mountain Lion is there. The Mountain Lion hates that... Stealth is their main hunting tactic. It's their natural instinct. The Mountain Lion certainly is not afraid of that Coyote, only extremely annoyed..

Mountain lions can leap 45 feet/13 meters. Amazing animals.
Cats r solitary hunters. Whenever possible they will avoid a confrontation. Even a minor injury can result in starvation. They generally will not take any unnecessary risk because why should they.

I think that there was no fear on the part of the mother mountain lion. I think that she was just trying to make herself the sole focus of the coyote and then later, the two coyotes as the first coyote's mate had joined it. She will go back for her cubs as soon as she makes sure that the coyotes won't return to try and find them. What a beautiful animal she is!!!

Mark Alan I agree. That mother Mountain Lion knows exactly what she is facing and in no way wants to risk injury or even death. I doubt that three coyotes could actually kill a full grown Mountain Lion, but, they could give her an injury bad enough that she would be unable to hunt successfully for awhile which would pur her cubs lives at stake, and herself vulnerable if she where to be attacked by another preditor.

It's interesting to see the cougar on top of the fence barrier. It takes a very agile animal, when of this size anyway, to walk along the top of this fence barrier as if a tight-rope walker w/o a balancing stick or whatever they're called. Coyote or canine surely could never walk across the top of this fence barrier.
So mamma cougar protected her young & you clearly weren't in danger. ++
Right, it wasn't afraid of them. It was afraid of the attention they might attract. They could have drawn wolves in or simply prevented the cougars ability to a ghost in the forest. What an amazing experience for those people who were able to witness that.

Well, actually coyotes do inhabit most places wolves still survive in. Yes wolves commonly kill coyotes as they do any other predators they see as competition and are capable of killing. In places wolves have been reintroduced they are providing real challenges for the mountain lions. The lions are having a very hard time successfully raising young around wolves. If you doubt what I'm saying, check out Yellowstone. All three species live there. You might want to be sure of your facts before you start trying to call somebody out.

Cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare. I’ve never heard of a coyote attack on a human. ( I lived in lion and coyote country for 25 years in Montana.

@@USMC6976 In Florida they call them panthers, but are same as above. I realize there are different panthers in other countries, but the Florida panthers are cougars/pumas/mountain lions. They just happen to live in the Everglades.
The scientific name for this new-world cat is Puma concolor
(auto-correct corrected) and its range extends from the Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes. It has numerous common names throughout its range so to see if the cat you have in mind is the same species, check the scientific name that corresponds to the common name used in your area.
I lived in Oakhurst south of Yosemite and we saw a cougar drinking out of our pool. It was so beautiful

Cougars get chased by hounds and take to the trees before being shot by hunters. Those felines though more powerful than hounds are easily afraid, and fight back only as a last resort, when cornered. Cougars are supposed to hunt harmless animals or fight for territory, but not other carnivores, be they coyotes or hounds.

about 25 years ago I walked acros the meadow when a mountain lion passed me and turned into the driveway of the Awahnee Hotel and disappeared into the shrubs. Nobody believed me. This footage might be daughter or granddaughter of the one I saw.

Luckily for both of them. Even though the Mountain Lion would most likely win in a fight, Coyotes are still quicker and all it takes is one good bite in the right area to ruin the Mountain Lions ability to hunt properly. It'll probably be better to die in a fight than to starve to death after all.

Without an ambush the Cat wouldn't catch him. Coyote's are one of the fastest animals on Planet Earth. The Coyote knows that the Cougar is there and so is in little danger.
Coyotes top at out 45 mph, Mountain Lions top out at 50 mph. Cats typically can run faster than canines but canines can typically run for longer periods than cats.

Amazing footage. I hiked out to Taft point by myself as the sun was going down, and the whole time in the woods I felt like a cougar was going to jump down from a tree and get me. I walked with a knife in my hand lol.

all it's about strength of animal....an African leopard for example , would killed both coyotes easy & just for fun ....!!! you can watch plenty of videos about that....
