It is, 1.6mm over the centre 75% of the tyre width. I have just had two new front tyres fitted on my diesel Meriva. The annoying thing is, the outside tread is not cut full depth on some tyres so the edges will always go illegal first. you have to be careful as my 75% when I checked it includes some of the outside tread, if people check in the centre channels only for the 1.6mm they could be illegal on the outside tread.
Good to find a clip showing how to check.... I've never really thought about it although I do replace tires when they get a bit like kojaks head hahahaha.... Well done to the police, very informative
Is he a full shilling?.... or 20p piece perhaps. Does he tell you what the law actually is i.e. 1.6mm across the centre three quarters and what that means in real life? Why not get a couple of used tyres and show some of the issues the police can prosecute you for while he’s at it?
Very informative especially as the weather is getting bad. Wouldn't mind him checking my tyres any day !
Great video thanks
What if there is wear on the outer edge? is the tred depth only measure over the 3 quarter bead?
All have to be over 1.6mm

Is this real or a wind up? he just doesn't look right
needs a new flat cap by the looks of it.
But what if there are blemishes on the inner tyre surface which you may not be able to see?
No need to check a handbook for pressures. It's ALWAYS on a sticker when you open the driver's door.
Thats a common belief but certainly isnt ALWAYS there, not on all cars...
On the filler cap cover on mine.
One wonders if this was recorded next to the M1
