  • Sarah shows you how to sow sweet pea seeds in the winter for more productive plants in the summer months. Using her favourites 'Prince Edward of York' and 'Matucana', she shows you how she uses rootrainers for more successful growth.

Thank you for the explanation. I'll be trying my first batch. We're in early December.

    Hi Sarah
With regard to mice , I find that if I germinate the seeds on damp kitchen paper and then put them into pots, the mice won't eat them. Apparently mice are not attracted to a germinated sweet pea seed. The seeds germinate in a matter of days in the kitchen. I use a labelled ramekin lined with damp kitchen roll and covered with clingfilm. I have had great success with this method, which has the added advantage of knowing you are sowing a viable growing seed.

Interesting video, Sarah, on sowing sweet peas and I'm a big fan of rootrainers. One observation, roots in rootrainers don't (or shouldn't) "break off" when they get to the bottom of the cell, the cell should be lifted off the surface so that the root is effectively "air pruned" (i.e. won't grow) and another root starts to grow. Left on the surface roots will still attempt to straggle on.... You can suspend them a bit off the surface by placing the whole unit between bricks (the rootrainer has a ridge on them to facilitate this) or you can buy a separate rootrainer frame designed for the job, not expensive, about £20, holds 8 full-size rootrainer units = 256 cells. I usually place a layer of kitchen cooking foil under the cells on the surface to maximise the light and thereby the air pruning.... The other thing I do in the case of sweet peas (and a few other larger seeds) is to chit the seeds in a seed tray before sowing them in the compost cells. Very friendly idea of the couple in each cell.... ahhhh! I'll do that this year. Great site, great products, great tips.... Happy New Year. b. x

To stop mice climbing onto your bench, stand the legs of the bench in buckets of water. I use galvanised metal legs.

    Hi Sarah,
You mention that by cutting the top off, you get a smaller, not so high a sweet pea. Can you give me an idea as to what that hight might be?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Sarah.
Love your video,am currently sowing my sweet peas but cannot find those root trainer pots anywhere here in Ireland or on the internet. Can you tell me where you got yours? Maybe they have a website and deliver to Ireland. I'm currently using the toilet roll method!
    Thanks for your informative video

Are the sweet peas the only annual that you use the root trainers for or are there other seeds that benefit from this type of planting cell?
