  • Hundreds of international students converged on downtown Vancouver on Saturday, protesting the province’s changes to permanent residency standards. B.C.'s update to the provincial nominee program won't come into effect until next year, but as Sohrab Sandhu reports, students say it will impact their chances of becoming a permanent resident.

From what I understand, these students were attracted to BC province due to the old policies, and applying for provincial nomination directly after graduation was part of that policy. If the government suddenly changes the policy, it shouldn't affect those already enrolled, especially those who started before January 2024 or even earlier. While the new policy should be supported, the government must ensure proper arrangements are made for these STEM master's students already in the program.

I looked at the old government policy and it was clearly misleading. It led many excellent students into the government's trap. Don't consider their temporary resident status. You can see that this is simply a question of justice. Don't be blinded by hatred and don't blame all the negative things on the Jews like the Nazis did. Canada needs justice today and in the future.

Thank you for your timely and objective news about our protest. Please let us clarify the reason why we start a protest. We are well-educated and skilled people. A one-year job offer is not an obstacle for us; however, we are concerned about the credibility of the BC government. They changed a 10-year policy overnight on a website without any consultation with the public. If we remain silent and accept the new policy, who can guarantee the government will not raise the bar again? Many of us quit decent jobs, sold houses, said goodbye to mom, and moved to Canada. We believed the Canadian dream was worth sacrificing everything for. Now we feel betrayed.
Moreover, the timing of this new policy change occurred after new students had accepted their offers and paid deposits. Planning for graduate school typically takes at least two years, so the invisible costs are also heavy. We are the victims of this change.

The new policy represents a positive shift, yet it unfairly disadvantages current STEM students who will graduate shortly after its implementation. Many companies prefer to hire individuals who already possess permanent residency or citizenship. For instance, consider two foreign students with identical skills: one graduates in Fall 2024, and the other in Spring 2025. The one with permanent residency is more likely to secure a job. This disparity is profoundly unfair and frustrating.

If I had known about the BCPNP policy changes, I would not have left the United States. I will continue to work in New York City where there are more job opportunities. I came to BC because I knew BCPNP would offer a more stable life balance. And I spend 40,000 to 50,000 Canadian dollars to come here every year, and you suddenly cancel the original agreement conditions. Many of my classmates, like me, gave up their offers from Ivy League universities. Why did they come here? I lived in the United States for 10 years and I gave up all my friends and family to come here. The reason I am leaving the United States is due to the H-1B visa lottery selection process. I came here to study, but the policy gave us a promise at the beginning. I believe I am not the only one affected here; many people who have brought their families will be even more significantly impacted than I am. Some might question whether I can find a job or if my language skills are not up to par. Having lived in the United States for 10 years, my English proficiency could not possibly be an issue. Furthermore, the majority of us have invested a significant amount of effort, finances, and time to prepare for this move. Shouldn't policy changes provide us with a buffer period to prepare? It's surprising to see that policies in Canada can be changed overnight.

I don't usually post on the Internet but some hateful comments made me very uncomfortable. Even though I am not enrolled in PNP program and this doesn't affect me that much as those who had quit their jobs/brought families, I feel this is unfair for people who have made choices influenced by the old policy. Last year I gave up offer from my dream program at CMU and came to study and research at British Columbia because I trusted in the consistency of BC's policy and the opportunity to gain more work experience after graduation (in the States it's shorter for non-STEM majors). In fact, there are many staff and professors in my university were once international students. Most international students I know are well educated people, who work diligently and contribute to the economy and educational system, not like those hateful comments said. BC government used this policy to attract students, and then changed it overnight because of a few bad actors. This change without any buffer period ends up affecting all students graduating later than Dec. 2024, including those who have enrolled and accepted offers. We all know the current job market is very challenging to enter, not to mention many positions require PR/citizenship. The sudden change on work permit length and BCPNP program have brought huge stress in the international students communities.

The implementation of a new policy should indeed consider the rights and commitments made to those who enrolled under the previous policy. Providing access to the old policy pathway for students who enrolled under different terms reflects a commitment to fairness and consistency, aligning with fundamental Canadian values. Upholding the credibility of the government and fostering trust among citizens is paramount, as arbitrary changes to policies undermine public confidence and erode trust in governance.

Some students have given up offers from Yale to attend a two-year master's program in BC due to this policy. They need to publish papers at international conferences to enhance the academic reputation of BC universities. They also need to pass thesis defenses. Meanwhile, students in one-year programs only need to complete their courses to graduate. The absurdity arises when, assuming they all enrolled in the fall of 2023, the one-year students can apply for provincial nomination under the old rules, while the two-year students, who face greater challenges and make more significant contributions, cannot? Is this really the outcome a government policy should produce? If this is the case, we will all live in fear of policy instability, even if we meet the new rules, because no one knows whether we will become a victim again.

The implementation of the new policy should fully consider the rights and interests of Master's students currently enrolled in 2024 and those about to enroll. For new students entering in 2025, the new policy should be enforced. The government needs to ensure fairness and justice to maintain its credibility. While the sacrifice of this small group may seem inconsequential to Canada as a whole, it is devastating for each of their families. They will feel extremely painful and heartbroken, losing trust in the government's commitments. They made choices before enrollment based on the guidance of the old policy, believing in the government, sacrificing much, and giving up much, all to come to BC to pursue their dreams. They have already invested significant financial and time costs in education, only to be abandoned by the government before graduation. This blow is enough to destroy many families. If all policy updates lack transition periods, even local Canadians may feel insecure. It's highly likely that what's happening to the students today could happen to you in the future.

And we have around 1000 boomers turning 65 each and everyday in Canada (That started in 2011 won’t end until 2028) By 2036 we will have around 11 million Canadian seniors
As by 2032 immigration will make up 100% of our population growth
So we pack in the immigrants the poor ones to make our french fries and more importantly flip us over in bed in the old age home

Yes it’s one big Ponzi scheme that scr (ew) over the younger folks but we don’t want to crash our Ponzi Scheme of economy.
(I have purposely gone to live in countries and among the locals living on a dollar a day wages in comparison to our dollar. You think your life su…cks these days)
Try having 50k of someone else’s currency worth 2 million of our Canadian dollars
Or have what kids you and I did actually have… Having to sell their wares to Russian sailors for a 500 CDN dollar loaf of bread or trying to sail a boat to some distant country for a better life
Or grandmami/grandpapi begging on the street because that nest egg home they have they can’t sell off or afford to live in
So the people at the bottom of our society lose out…. or we all do
Don’t like packing in these immigrants/people as the solution?
Let’s hear you folks say “I demand to pay more taxes” and “I demand less social services in return”
Or let’s sell 25 year 50 year forward contracts on our natural resources some foreign corporation or Country can come into mine. Using our young as cheap labour
Or let’s be known as the deadbeat generation who had to resort to selling off pieces of Canada
Plus since we stopped replacing ourselves.
It will be more and more likely the great great great grandkids of these new immigrants stuck paying off the debts we run up long after we are gone… As we stick them with the bill
But since we have been sel fish our whole lives living that good life let’s “now” complain about the solutions after decades and decades of this

What Canada created there is a huge loophole on their immigration system which is being exploited by economic migrants, pretending to be students. Mostly from overpopulated countries like India, China, Philippines, Pakistan and some African countries. Your government needs to put an end to this, otherwise it will get out of control and the damages will be irreversible. If Canada has a demographic issue, it should solve it by supporting young Canadians and Canadian working families, so they have more kids.

We borrowed and spent living the good life/high standard of living
That is what you folks don’t get… we are broke…. Canadians who can’t pay our debts sitting on 2 trillion in Provincial/Federal debt these days
Debt we really started running up in the 1940s.
Sow dem gud ole dais ye pine fer?
we didn’t pay for the first time around
Which we just kicked this debt down the road for future generations to pay for
Problem is, we stopped meeting “natural” population replacement rates in 1971
And we have around 1000 boomers turning 65 each and everyday in Canada (That started in 2011 won’t end until 2028) By 2036 we will have around 11 million Canadian seniors
As by 2032 immigration will make up 100% of our population growth
So we pack in the immigrants the poor ones to make our french fries and more importantly flip us over in bed in the old age home
The rich ones to come support the economy and prop up the real estate
Because most of these boomers are also personally cash poor/in debt
      But luckily….most of these boomers????
Shockingly by some engineered miracle the last few decades 😉!!!!! own a 40 year old plus never been renovated, overpriced home some immigrant is willing to overpay for.
Which these boomers can get lines of credit on or reverse mortgage on Or sell if they have to
Which they should not .. … as that home will be one their own personal old age home in the future unless you can show me some links…
on our building/buying enough facilities to house millions of Canadian seniors in the next decade

Completely cutting off this pathway is not a good idea, to be honest, which will only results in a much fiercer competition between immigrants and locals for our already limited jobs.

Is the reporter saying that the new rule requires 1-year work experience to be eligible? If so, what's wrong? Just getting Master's degree is too generous and applicants unable to get that work will not be able to live in BC, where the cost of living is one of the highest. It may sound tough but someday applicants will know that the endeavor to get that work experience has solidified the basis to live in BC.

No one signed a contract with these students guaranteeing that the permanent residency program will not change. They only guaranteed them education in exchange for the money that they paid. That's it. So no one violated any conditions.

Side note, can someone explain why pride flags show up in places that have zero to do with gay rights? It's the strangest thing, yet it's constant. It's almost like there's an agenda...
