I almost passed this video by because of the age of Mr. Jussen. I am delighted I did listen to him play because it is one of the best, if not the best performances I have heard of this piece. I am an old man now and I've always had an opinion that the performer's age is essential to the depth of emotion that Brahms composed. I know have a different opinion. If there are "old souls" in our world, this young man is one. I performed this on my senior recital in college and have listened to many performances over my lifetime. This is in the top 3 if not number 1. I don't know what to say except if you listen and are moved to tears by a performance, you have accomplished greatness in art. I was indeed moved by this, and I look forward to hearing more from him and his talented brother. Thank you for posting!
With all due respect, but you're taking this performance way too much as proof of mysticism you seem to believe in. This performance is good, mostly, because the performer knows how to analyse the score of it and knows how to practice what Brahms wrote down. There's one really massive flaw in this performance which I really don't understand. 0:47. A key change and a start of a different segment, where previous phrases end. It's played through like it's insignificant. No slight slow-down in between, no articulation. At an intersection of 2 different segments of the piece. I think this was most likely a slip of mind relating to practicing the piece in segments and the crossover between the 2 being overlooked. Not anything at the detriment of Arthur Jussen, these things happen regularly in live performances but I just see them as evidence that even pros should still have notes in front of them.
@@classicallpvault I totally agree with you on the miss at 0.47 that is a big connection in the overall structure and it was missed. That is a clear indication of youth and will come with more age and maturity. I do disagree with you on having notes in front of you in a performance. There are many performers who would benefit from notes, but there are many to which it is a detriment to performing. I think if you have it memorized you can concentrate on the overall sound and then notes can become a distraction. But it has to be locked in memorization, which many are capable of, and some struggle with. Everyone's talent has strengths and weaknesses, and that's what makes each performance their own. And it is rare to have a perfect performance, and if asked most performers would say there was something they did that could have been better.
Love the place. Cars, trucks, trains outhere run silently behind the bay windows, while we step upside and listen this marvel composed 150 years ago in a totally different world. Mystical experience. Great pianist.
Never a better recorded performance, for sure. Here is utter abandon, but kept under the very constraints Brahms composed into his scores. I somehow believe only Clara Schumann, schooled by her father in the same highly disciplined technique we witness here, could have equalled--perhaps did equal on stage or before her husband and Johannes at home--Arthur's offering. Bravo, you two "evil twins." Wherever you are may you ever remain as inseparable as the mythical Greek ones. Mark, in America
Glenn Gould's rendition for me is unsurpassed. Although it's a slightly faster tempo, his phrasing is ultimately more nuanced and accomplished. And as always with Gould, his attention to the integrity of the piece's structure is on point. th-cam.com/video/7wjqpCh7a4Y/w-d-xo.html
My teacher taught me this tune because it shows how to master inner voicings and how to bring out bass, harmony and melody through the art and craft of fingers, breathing and emotion.
So far I have listened this piece played by Arthur Rubinstein, Wilhelm Kempff, Radu Lupu and Helene Grimaud, but Mr. Jussen's interpretation is more sensitive, serene and full of compassion. This is a marvelous performance.
@@mochdrew3364 but that is the art that this teenager has brought to the piece - a dangerous, exciting path that he has chosen to get to the kernel of truth here. I have to laugh at the people here who post negative comments. Is it because he is so beautiful, young and brilliant that upsets you?? The world is full of wannabes. Arthur and his brother have achieved more at 21 and 24 that most pianists do in a lifetime. So easy to make stupid and opinionated comments and apparently for some, so difficult to acknowledge the purity and extraordinary gifts these boys have.
He's talented, but if you know the score there's a lot more details and dinamics to perform than this kid does, plus a couple very important wrong notes.
I think sometimes we get too invested in analyzing and comparing performers/performances of this beautiful music, and we completely miss the point. The reason Brahms wrote this was to tell us a story, to entertain both the audience and the performer. So what if he didn't follow the notes exactly as Brahms would have? Does that really make this performance any less beautiful? As someone who has less than a fraction of this young man's talent, I'm content to just listen and enjoy.

The hurdle of how to interpret a piece in the way an artist thought and felt generations ago is unimaginably difficult to fathom. But we are so lucky today as to get to hear beautiful music performed by masters of their craft, and it is so worth all the effort.
I also love to play this intermezzo. I believe you have chosen the perfect tempo, though so many really fine players today play this at quite a clip. I loved your interpretation, especially when you held back between the sections. Keep up the fine work. I hope we get to hear a lot of your playing in the future.
Thank you so much Arthur, I really really enjoyed watching you playing. You play like an Angel and look like one too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Wow. So beautiful and full of feeling. Played very softly the whole way through, yet there seems to be such depth and dynamic range, even so. That was amazing, and wonderful, and a total privilege to be able to listen to.
I play this piece , as does a friend, who has converted me to this slower tempo. He reminded me of Brahms the contrapuntalist, and the counterpoint is dense here. Slower allows sonorities to, bloom, too. I'm so glad I ran across this video. As throwcats mentions, too, the soft dynamic range is well chosen and manages to be rich. Nice piano and a resonant room adds to it. This might be my favorite 118/2 on youtube. Or anywhere. Now I think I'll practice.
Agree, but I exclude the highway outside maybe... A usual place for other pianists, for example Kristian Bezuidenhout playing Duetto by Mendelssohn where this effect was still worse!

Don't you mean the Weasley family?
Really talented Luke Skywalker, indeed!

What a tremendous artist for one so young !
I really enjoyed the pace he played this piece, slowly enough to appreciate every note!
Thank you so much Arthur, I really really enjoyed watching you playing. You play like an Angel and look like one too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Great composition, supremely well played by this PIANIST....
This is truly a love song to oneself. There are no peers. Thank you.
Very good job. He definitely feels what he plays!!! That's the most important.

@@mikhailtrushechkin1642 I love it, it has the spirit of Brahms also
Outstanding in every way.
Exquisite interpretation. So sensitive. I absolutely love it.
I love his tempo and interpretation. Excellent!
Wow. So beautiful and full of feeling. Played very softly the whole way through, yet there seems to be such depth and dynamic range, even so. That was amazing, and wonderful, and a total privilege to be able to listen to.
+throwscats Wait til u hear Pogorelich's version....OUT OF SIGHT
played slower than most, usually a drawback for me, but such a sensitive performance that i've listened to this many many times. pure pleasure

Oh, and I will be in Amsterdam this june. Is this a music venue?
Very enjoyable, the whole video! the setting, the filming, relaxing, enchanting!
And Arthur is easy on the eyes!
Agree, but I exclude the highway outside maybe... A usual place for other pianists, for example Kristian Bezuidenhout playing Duetto by Mendelssohn where this effect was still worse!
Yes, he’s cute enough

Perhaps don't know good music or musicians? Or video not appealing to them?
I couldn't agree more! I have been learning this song myself and it's not an easy song and to play it with that much feeling is just amazing!
b/c you don't "understand" the piece
7 years that i came back to this incredible rendition
