  • Lots of people ask me about buying a good hunting dog. My answer is always the same, "Buy the dog that fits your lifestyle and get started training ASAP!"
    I hope you guys enjoy!
This channel is devoted to providing a window into the life of professional dog trainer, Stonnie Dennis. I talk about dog training, boarding, health, equipment, and all the things that go into owning and running a successful dog training and boarding kennel.
At our kennel we place special emphasis on helping dogs reach their full potential through the use of physically and mentally demanding activities. Our primary goal is to help families raise happy, healthy, well socialized, canine companions.
We especially love training Labrador Retrievers, so don't be surprised when you see Labs of every age, size, shape, and color!!!

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

Just got me a chocolate lab and I'm training her currently. She's 13 weeks old. And she's already so smart and learning so fast. I realize how important is it to get from a good breeder. Makes a whole lot of difference. In a week she's almost potty trained. Knows come and sit pretty darn well. No leash training. And I'm watching this video a lot to get ideas. You're explaining a lot of little things that I feel like make a huge difference. And youre teaching how to make a great bond with them as well. Thank you!!

Stonnie, my man! Your description of the "bad dog" ending up being a "bad fit for a dog" scenario is sooo accurate! I hardship adopted a coonhound/chocolate lab, Remington. He is a handful but a good fit for me because I'm 37 single, no kids and thoroughly enjoy the outdoors. In most cases it would not benefit him too live as a full on family dog because it over stimulates his natural instincts. My brother stays up all night and has been bringing his gf and 6 year old to sleep at our home, seriously having a negative effect on my dog. I try to explain that he is a 50/50 purpose dog and that I don't want the kid hanging on him. They think I'm a jerk but I'm not trying to raise a dog that thinks its playtime everytime there's a kid around. They fight a lot, come here between 9pm-2am and go in his room till 2 Oclock in the afternoon. I'm leaving the end of April, I feel terrible for my dog. Also the kid won't stop engaging him and tempting the dog. He's gonna get bit and I keep warning them that he isn't a floozy dog and I don't train him for deception. The kid runs around and howls at dogs down across the street, the neighbors dogs....its bad man. I hate it. Sorry, had to vent.

Hows it going? I don’t think a coonhound/lab will bite anyone, they’re pretty patient, but yeah coonhounds don’t really play much, they like to work and they LOVE to sleep. If the kid came over in the afternoon and ran around outside with him for 3 hours, the dog would probably love it. Best of luck!

I have a 12 week old alaskan husky that im lucky enough to bring with me to work as a shuttering carpenter and I can see a big change in his behavoir as he has had to learn that he is not the center of attention while we are working. (He gets alot of attention and all the exercise he wants after work tough ;) Im picking up a lot of wisdom from your videos allthough i dont do alot of treats or (marking?) Myself. Hi Uncle Stonnie,
I'll never be taking my much older(5 & 8yrs) little mixed breeds out for hunting, but I enjoyed your video immensely...it was just a pleasure to watch you with Claire and Ranger and see the results you got. And as one of your other commenters wrote, I agree that before anyone goes to add a dog to their family, either by breeder, pure-breed rescue or a shelter, they should be made to watch the beginning of this video about the person getting the "right"
dog for them and their lifestyle.
So important and hopefully people will get the right dog and they'll be less of these beautiful animals being dumped at shelters or being returned to shelters, sometimes over and over again. People need to know they are making a commitment for the life of their dog.
Thanks for this great, fun, and responsible video. Enjoy all your videos and I'm learning how to train my older rescued dogs things they never got a chance to learn.
Regards to Eli and hope his hand heals well.

I agree! Lifestyle fit is very important, and getting it wrong is tough on the new owner as well as the dog.
Having just gone thru a non-workable situation with a rescue dog that had been mis-labeled as the incorrect breed by the rescue agency, it is something they need to work on. FANTASTIC, smart dog with unlimited potential for the right owner, but put into a home that could not give him the time and energy release his actual breed needed. Thankfully we got him quickly rehomed into a perfect fit family once his true nature and needs were realized.

Stonnie Dennis so you telling us there’s a difference between German Shorthair Pointers Labradors Shepherds or Goldens? All are work (field) dogs with high energy stamina and are used for hunting (or herding with Shepherds). The Lab and Gold are Retrievers, as is the Gsp with also flushes and points (which this versatility is the best). I’d like too one that likes camping or just staying at home. It must have guarding/protection traits too. Which dog will I need, or am I asking for too much? The dog has to do well in an urban environment as well as rural.

The only popular hunting dog listed as a guard dog is the GSP, and deservedly so. There's a video from a few years back where (38:05) the trainer (Stonnie?) compares Weimaraner's and GSPs and explains that the GSP "is a different kind of dog. It's a German dog." The trainer goes on to explain that if a stranger entered his yard with his kids there "they wouldn't have a very good day."

We wanted the endurance of hiking all kinds of terrain, live more rurally, have help training and aren’t gone excessively. Still hoping I can train and work hard enough for this dog. I’m always researching and learning.

Stonnie, i am always amazed in your videos at non existence of barking in either your traning dog or surrounding dogs ! Could you try to clarify or define a training technique.
Thanks for all you do ! Mark

Awaiting for my first dog a chocolate Labrador (grew up w Labrador) but due to covid border restrictions I cannot get her until she’s almost 4 months of age! Am worried as she’s not being trained. I watch your videos and have learned so much. You are an excellent voice. I wish I was able to send her to you but in Malta in Europe! Thank you for your videos. Serena

Hey Stonnie! I love Your Videos and your work. Just a little help from Italy since I studied Latin for a long time. INTER species comes from Latin inter, between, so it is used for socialization with animals of other species. INTRA comes from the Latin word inside, so it is used for socialization with other dogs.
Thank you again for all the precious tips!

Excellent video. Exactly what I am looking for: a great family dog that goes hunting once in a while. I also need one that doesn't shed too much (wife doesn't like dog hair everywhere) and won't wear me out too much (63 and reasonably active). Probably not a lab, because of the shedding; maybe a pointing Griffon?

Hi Stonnie, as a Labrador breeder I am always looking to give my clients the best and most of their early start with me (potty training, allowing them to wander in and out of crates, etc. Could you do a video in regards to what can, can't, should, shouldn't be done within the first 8 weeks?

You had me at Labrador. If you ever go swimming in a lake with your lab. Grab hold of it's tail, you'll be pulled to shore. I like your manner.

Thank you for all that you teach us Stonnie. I'm having trouble with my 7 month old Treeing Walker Coonhound on camping trips. I take him hiking or running around 3-4 times a week, and walking at least once a day. Now we're working on off leash hiking and camping, and he has a recall that is solid about 90% of the time, but he has runoff twice now and I almost lost him (4 hours of searching) in Charles Deam Wilderness a few weeks ago. I've been using a whistle and treats for about 2 months to develop his recall. Do you have any tips on maintaining safety while winter camping with my dog, and developing a recall that keeps my dog safe?

Have you done anything to get her so attentive? She's constantly looking to you and sitting in front of you, it's amazing! My pup will only listen to me if he knows I have food, he used to be attentive but now he's in his teenager phase and isn't so much. Don't get me wrong he's wonderful, but he gets very distracted sometimes!

Hi Stonnie! I absolutely love your videos! You got my kids saying " You're a fine animal" to each other and it's pretty funny. So I have a quick question for you. I just recently adopted 2 puppies from the same litter. They are brothers, but couldn't be more different by the way they look and their temperament. They are supposed to be black lab mixes. One of them we named Raven and he is the smaller, more lab-like gentle pup. He walks very nicely on the leash and a very good listener. The other one we named Rascal and he is bigger, more dominant pup and does whatever he wants to do. He kind of looks like he is mixed with a Springer Spaniel or a Setter. They are about 18 weeks old and both incredibly smart. However, Rascal, even though he is learning all the commands, still does whatever he wants. He steals food by getting on the counter or from the other dogs in the house. He barks and growls at the other dogs. Every day I take the dogs out to a field and let them run around and he is usually very good outside. But when we get home, he is like a 3-year-old kid on a sugar rush. Just so hard to handle. Even my other dogs look at me like well you did it to yourself, could have just got one more instead of two! I guess my question is what can I do more with him to get him to listen to me as my other 5 dogs do? What do you think about introducing an ecollar with him at some point to correct unwanted behavior? Thank you for your videos and all you do!
