$0.25 Sugarcane Juice on the Streets of Kolkata, India 🇮🇳

  • Nothing feels more refreshing than a fresh sugarcane juice on a hot day in India. It's cheap, delicious and always squeezed fresh to order. Hygiene is a bit of a concern with this drink though, as the sticks of sugarcane are usually transported in dirty conditions and are often just stacked on the ground before going through the sugarcane press.

@@shubhampreetsingh8630 actually there are quite a few reasons to avoid sugarcane juice. Firstly, the canes are typically sitting on the site of the road at the vendor. Like a sponge they are porous and all that dust and dirt sticks on them before someone who typically doesn’t wash their hands takes them and puts them through a press to make the juice. Also many insects crawl inside the cane in the fields and of course they are still inside when the cane is pressed. Overall it’s just a very high risk thing to drink.

As a kid i'd always get sick when i went to Tunisia because in hotels all the soft drinks and sodas were made from syrup and tap water. And i'd drink tap water anyway because they'd overprice their bottled water in tourist area. We called it the "Tourista", the sickness you get when you drink some water from another country. Always got sick a little for a while (mainly stomach pain and the bathroom trips that follow), then i could drink tap water the rest of the stay there. Until i leave and come back again.

Usually most of the Indians do not eat street food, some of us are very picky in terms of hygiene, season (especially when it's summer or rainy season, we avoid the salty taste). I used to eat pani puri but after I gained maturity, it's been several years. (maybe 7/8+ years) that I haven't eaten Pani puri because of hygiene issues.
