  • I just picked up a Leica Q2 and took it out for a shoot around Point Reyes. As a Sony shooter (and former Canon shooter), there was a major difference with Leica that I found... one that will take some mental energy to overcome!

    Keep it going bro. I’m just getting into photography and looking through your videos makes me realize how much it is to get out and shoot.

      Don’t be intimidated by what it takes! If anything, use your phone and just wake up early and find something close by that would look interesting in sunrise lighting. That only takes a little sleep sacrifice but nothing else. 💪🏼

    You said it at the end - you’re making it too complicated. It’s a Leica. The brand is built on simplicity that allows you to just shoot. ETTR, exposure compensation, and overthinking the exposure seems to be distracting you from the experience.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  ปีที่แล้ว

      True, and I get that. However, shooting ETTR is no different than when I shoot +1 for all my film work, which I shoot on cameras from the 50’s - 70’s. And this was more of a test, because it’s a digital camera and many people come to Leica from more complex systems.

    Nice to spend the time with you again. One of my all time favourite shots was off my Q2, then i sold the camera, big mistake is, that shot is my desktop so every time i open my Mac it miss my Q2. It’s coming back next week. Got to work out how to marry it with the A7Riv is all…. It took some shots at daughters wedding on Q2, its such a small guy nobody noticed it, except the photographer and videographer, who couldn’t resist eventually coming over and asking to “hold” the Leica, but the thing is, the files are so good i could crop in and didn’t miss having a long lens. I did a full body shot of bride and grooms that cropped down to such a glorious head and shoulder shot, nice grain. And the look, oh so nice.

    I was in the Navy stationed at Skaggs Island. There are so many cool places in that area of CA to take photos. I was using a Voigtlander Vito B back in the mid 70s. Love how you talked how the Leica is different. I used to have a Leica CL and a Fuji X100V and just traded them both in for a Q2.

      Welcome to the Q2 family! It’s such a fun camera. And I agree, tons of cool places north of the Bay Area that are so awesome explore and photograph.

    I have a Q2 Monochrome, and I usually shoot it 1/2 or more under. It will blow out the highlights in a heartbeat. Especially in harsh light. I absolutely love this camera, and using it was spark that had me purchasing an A7RV.

    Great video!
    I love and hate my Q2;) Usually underexposing when shooting without nd filters. I found it’s not comfortable to work at sunny days with it because no eyecup- baseball hat is a kind of solution but you know. Still it’s a great camera which i use together with SLS2. I even shoot some short videos with it when i need to ad to sls2 some cropped footage.
    So, love it, hate it, enjoy it!

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! A friend of mine has it as a companion to his SLS2, and it sounds like a great combo! It's a partner to my Sony system, more for personal stuff at the moment. Super fun to shoot on, but I totally get your experience shooting on sunny days as well!

    I’m a Q2 shooter and have the same impression that it overexposes a bit at the default setting when compared to both Sony and Canon. I’ve had other Leica cameras in the past (Q, X2) and they seemed to do the same. I tend to just shoot with the exposure adjusted down 1/3 or 2/3 stop and all is well. I think this might have something to do with the addition of highlight adjusted metering that came in a recent firmware update, but haven’t found that to be ideal for general shooting. All said, Q2 is still my favorite camera that I’ve ever owned.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I definitely find Leica has to be a bit underexposed. The Q2 is an incredible camera, and that lens is art!

    Protect the highlights at all cost, you can push the shadows a lot but the highlights are gone super quick

    I was at the center of Point Reyes in September, great place. I got my Q2 March 2019 absolutely loved it. I sold it and bought the Q2M with all the color filters, it's next level with a single lens camera!!!! I use Nikon Z6 & Hasselblad X1D Mark2 for color. It's fine to keep upgrading and changing your gear. As long as we take a moment to remember our hearts & minds are the camera we really use. External gear is a want. That said nothing like a Leica or a Hasselblad in the hand.

      @@davidherring I see you have the reporter edition in the video. Such a. great look ! I think in the next month or two we will see the Q3 !!! I notice Leica is pushing Q2 sales on social media both q2 & SL2 to deplete inventories and get ready for the next release. I think the SL3 will have a really usable AF system and a better low light color sensor very tempting with the huge 24-90 perfect zoom ! the new 100-400 and you got an entire system go anywhere. My biggest frustration with the Q2 is it caps out at ISO 6400 the Q2M is just getting warmed up at ISO 6400 it's sharper to an almost medium format look as well.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually don’t have the reporter! The guy who I bought it from had put a green skin on it (it’s a standard black one) and I liked it so I kept it on! And I’m jealous of you Q2M. I kind of want one but I’ve never been committed to BW enough for that level of investment. Looking forward to the Q3 announcement, and when the SL3 drops I may switch over from Sony to Leica!

    • @walkingmeditation61
      @walkingmeditation61 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidherring yeah SL3 will correct in my opinion what needs to happen Solid AF and a high ISO capability the two things the SL2 needs. Q3 will sell like hotcakes like the Q2 did Leica's best selling product I get a kick out of all the you tube videos comparing the Q2 to the Fuji X100V. laughable

  • @SunshineHB

    Highlight exposure mode and compensate to the right from there. 🎉. IME ETTR really only applies to film since you can over expose it 1-2 stops and still retain highlights without getting muddy shadows. I personally like underexposing film 😂.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I shoot ETTR in winter. Makes a huge difference with snow. But yes, I always shoot film +1. Back to digital, I’ve found the constantly improving dynamic range with the camera systems allow you to retain highlights better and better. But not so with the Q2 😂

    • @SunshineHB
      @SunshineHB ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidherring I was shooting the X1D for a while and you could pretty much recover everything. That thing you could totally shoot to the right. It didn’t matter either way because you could also pull several stops out of the shadows. That camera didn’t last long, though. It was a clunker, and I found the modern Hasselblad glass kind of sterile and boring. I came crawling right back to the red dot. I’m a hobbyist these days, but if I were paying bills with the camera I’m sure I would still be shooting Canon. Sony wasn’t fully developed yet by the time I took up another career path. (My last paid shoot was with the 5D mk2. Ancient technology.) 😁

    You can make in-between iso stops using the dial on the far right. Took me a while to figure that out, but auto iso is pretty fantastic too.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to shoot at 100 all day since it was mostly bright even being overcast, and just used the shutter compensation. But the ISO dial will def be helpful for other shoots! Thanks for the tip!

    Leica is notoriously unforgiving with overexposure. it's quite easy to blow the highlights and they're typically unrecoverable.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very true of systems before the M11. The M11 though is wild with dynamic range.

  • @visualsciencelabkirktuck3834
    @visualsciencelabkirktuck3834 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So, basically, the Leica's exposure meter is accurate and the others need to be compensated for. Right? Duh. just use the meter. Shoot raw, make a nice "roll off" profile and learn to apply it in raw conversion. Done. Why overthink exposure when you''ve finally got a camera in your hands that does it exactly right? Have one. It works perfectly.
