Nice tie! When I started tying flies back in 1976 we only took three wraps with a parachute tie. That was primarily because we were tying using those small Indian necks. The parachutes worked well with the Indian necks because you could use hackle with a little web on it without sinking the fly. This was long before Hoffman came up with his Super Grizzly necks. Whiting bought Hoffman out; expanded into all kinds of colors; and further hybridized to come up with Saddle Hackles that you can tie 3 or more flies with instead of using a neck. We have it so much easier now with our hackles.
I think Ed Schroeder was the first tier I ever saw who used 5-turns or more on his parachute flies. He would tie a hackle in at the bottom of the post, wrap it three turns up and then 2 to 3 turns back down and tie it off. Trick was to wiggle the hackle up and down as you came back down so you didn't trap a lot of fibers. This was with Metz hackle back then. When I was first tying, 3 turns were about all we'd get out of one hackle. With standard dry flies we'd usually use at least two hackles to tie it. Then along came Metz domestic necks and I thought I was in heaven. Next came Hoffman with his Super Grizzly and finally Whiting. Tiers now have no idea how good they have it compared to what we had to use in the 70's.
