Brand new to fly fishing and been living on Mad River videos, Katie tied up my first Gurgler, caught my first Bass on a fly rod with it first time out! Thanks for the video!
it's videos like this is why I support Mad river outfitters by purchasing from their website as well as my local fly shop. I'm picky who I give my money to. also always buy made in America whenever possible.
Nice job Katie. Enjoyed the video. Will tie some of these in the near future after I finish re-stocking my trout flies for PA fishing season. And of course, I’ll buy whatever materials I don’t currently have from MRO!
I choose this fly for adding flies to my rerepertoire of flies. This will work for me as your instruction allows for many variables. That way when someone examines it and says I didn't tie it right, I'll just tell them it's my variation. 😁
Jack Gartside would have capital L LOVED Katie tying his fly. Excellent instruction and solid explanation of a varied pattern, used pink for silvers in AK, black and silver at night for big browns in Massachusetts and mini white and lateral scale gurglers for landlock salmon in Maine. Solid pattern.
yellow - Brown Trout - fall float up from the bottom. Egg pattern 18" behind on 5 ft of leader to a gurgler. Deadly. Or a yellow booby. Works for Splake as well.
A question, is that thin piece of foam enough to keep the fly floating or is it the "lip" that pushes the fly upwards, lika reverse crankbaitlip or both? Great video!
Question, I have been seeing a lot of these popper tying videos and some recommend fly tying foam over crafting foam. Is there really that much of a difference between the two? Thanks and great video.
Just in time to get some tied up for Smallmouth!

Nice
Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks. I'm new to this. So why is that foam? To floating nicely on water?
Thanks for watching. Foam does make it float for sure.
yellow - Brown Trout - fall float up from the bottom. Egg pattern 18" behind on 5 ft of leader to a gurgler. Deadly. Or a yellow booby. Works for Splake as well.
Thanks for watching.
Reminds me a lot of the pyramid beetles we use here in Nevada for Lohantan Cutthroat trout
Cool! Thanks for watching.
What is this supposed to mimic? A bug? Just curious. Great instruction.

Food! Thanks for watching.
Nice video. Do you have any trouble with the marabou fouling the hook when fishing it?
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly to Katie at the shop and she’ll be happy help/answer.
A question, is that thin piece of foam enough to keep the fly floating or is it the "lip" that pushes the fly upwards, lika reverse crankbaitlip or both? Great video!
Both. It floats due to the foam and the lip pushes it upwards. Thanks for watching.
Question, I have been seeing a lot of these popper tying videos and some recommend fly tying foam over crafting foam. Is there really that much of a difference between the two? Thanks and great video.
Please contact the shop via phone or email and they will be happy to help. Thanks.
It's the same go to hobby lobby
Cool!
Ditto.
Thank you to share your passion, c'est pour quel type de poissons ? IAM french and beginner tying fly
Thanks for watching!
Use these at night for brown trout in michigan. They hit them hard.
Here in Ohio too! Thanks for watching.
Kelly would be proud of you Katie, you used marabou. I'm thinking you would fish this just like a popper. Is that correct?
Sounds about right. Thanks for watching.
Excelent... great
Thanks for watching.
Mui bien amiga
Gracias!
What size hook do recommend for largemouths? Can one use a steamer hook?
Please give a call or an email to the shop and they will be happy to help/answer.
Use any hook u like. It is a great fly for both salt and for sweet water.
Great gurgler I may tie some bigger to take to Alaska
You should! Thanks for watching.
I’m curious about that frog pattern gurgler with the spots and rubber legs. Is there a tutorial on that pattern?
Don't think there is but if so, would be on our channel in the Fly Tying Tutorials section.
What might be a good color combo for cutthroat and rainbow feeshes?
Chartreuse! Of course.
@@Madriveroutfitters ha, perfect! I'll give it a try here on the Bitterroot. Thanks!
Great Video! Ms. Johnstone you must be a teacher! Was that a traveler or saltwater traveler on that sweet base?!
Thanks for watching. You'd have to check with her though on the vise. Call her or e-mail her at the shop and she'll be happy to answer.
I only have red foam and some flash yarn chinille. I’ll just have to make it work 🤷♂️
The possibilities are endless!
where did you get that marble base?
You'd have to check with Katie on that. She can be reached at the shop. Thanks.
Nice to a woman in the videos. Women in the sport. Their so much more articulate.
