@@alex1231235 Our Technical Editor in Chief Rob Weaver currently has the new Kenevo SL in for test. You can check out his initial ride impressions in this article: www.bikeradar.com/news/specialized-2022-kenevo-sl/ I hope that helps!
I've been riding bikes my entire life, for 40 years. I've worked in the bike industry, and rode all the newest bikes. Recently I bought a Specialized Turbo Levo Expert, and it is by far my most favorite bike I've ever ridden. I actually love this bike and what it allows me to do. The Levo has changed my life in the way I ride, where I ride and how I ride.
What makes me laugh on these comments is so many people are so far up their own arse about ebikes they cannot get over the fact that are amazing machines, still give you a workout and at least for me and my type of riding (mostly xc), I can do so many more miles in the same time frame as I would on a normal MTB. What's not to like?
I totally agree with Alex. I rode a SC Heckler for a year. Recently added a 2022 Turbo Levo Pro and it is superior in every way. The finesse of the Brose motor makes steep climbs in low traction situations way way easier than on my Heckler. I still ride my Heckler and it's a nice bike but the Turbo Levo Pro is in another league. Battery life is impressive too. Yes the cost is crazy, but a lot of us are switching from riding off road motorcycles to eMTB so we think of our bicycles as motorcycle replacement. Makes the pain of the cost hurt a little less:)
Coming from dirt bikes to emtbs. My opinion is that most of the trails (west coast) do not allow motorbikes. E bikes are just easier to transport and being able to hit any trail is nice. I do still love riding motorbikes though.
Been riding pro Gen 3 for a month now coming from a SL I wanted more power and it just more fun to ride imo. I think it’s a keeper for many years to come
My 22 Turbo Levo Expert was recently stolen and thinking of replacing with S-Works and one size smaller. Thanks for the informative review. These bikes truly are mind blowing, I’m riding more than ever, well until recently. Makes me feel 20 years younger, hoping the reflexes catch up.
I have a Giant Stance, this will be definitely a great addition, specially those who actually like to ride a bike, same goes for those who like cars and motorcycles. It is a must have.
Real nice review thank you. I just test rode both the Expert model which I went to the shop to get since Specialized put it on sale and ended up with the S-works. I think there is quite a difference between them and this review is really about the S-works model. S-works has lots more carbon including rims and I found you could lift the front end much easier which made it feel more fun and potentially easier to jump, and change lines. Also I could feel the weight difference on slow turns which is where I could use the help on switchbacks. Haven't owned wireless shifters before but it did seem much faster to down shift several gears than the normal shift levers. I am sure both models are great its just that $15K does get you a whole nother level. Now if I can just get over riding such an expensive bike with such a limited skill level.
Thanks for the great review. Very detailed. I am comparing the Turbo Levo Expert and the Mondraker Crafty Carbon XR. I’m 194cm tall and I weigh a smidge under 100kg, probably 105ish with gear. I have an EP8 equipped Commencal Meta Power SX Race which I’m looking to replace because I feel like the EP8 doesn’t have enough punch and fizzles out when I try to pedal at higher cadences for example if I’m trying to ascend a steep climb quickly and I find the range isn’t very good either. I know the Bosch is a powerhouse with a peak output of 600 watts and the Mondraker has the new 750Wh battery so power and range should be good. The Turbo Levo is also quite powerful with 565watts and the large 700Wh battery, while 7% smaller than the Bosch, is still a good size battery. I’ve heard good things about both bikes and I’m struggling to decide between the two. I feel like the Bosch with more power and potentially more range is the better choice but from what I hear, the Turbo Levo Gen 3 is an almost perfect bike in terms of handling/ride characteristics. Can you give me any guidance on which bike you think is better and if there will be much of a noticeable difference between the two motors when I’m really pushing it up a hill at high cadences (110-120)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I wish I could test ride them both but unfortunately that just isn’t possible where I live. It’s hard enough trying to find one in stock let alone one for demo.
My only question is for this price how many points of engagement is the rear hub. For this price bike should have ONyx or industry 9 hubs or something equal.
The rearhub is a custom DT240 and with a fast ratched but you can even put a faster ratched, i have a pair of Race Face next 31 for 2y and still my favorit hubs due oversize bearings and great wp seals and yes fast engagement of the body.
Just saw a comparison video of all the Levo and Kenevo models and the reviewer pointed out that some folks prefer the feel of Aluminum rims over the carbon and that they might provide a more comfortable ride. I am now wondering if the S-works is really my best option as the Expert with more mixed materials frame and wheels did seem a little less stiff up and down curbs in my silly street test of both models and is also almost $6K cheaper on sale. Would anyone like to chime in on what their preference is and why ? I did like the wireless shifting and the ease of turning around where I felt the lighter weight but its hard to know what these bikes will feel like on the trail.
Alex what does the motor feel like when you reach the assistance limit can you ride through it ok, or is it like the old motor that feels like it’s breaking and slowing you down?
Thanks for your comment. There is definitely a fair amount of resistance once you exceed the assistance limit, especially on flatter ground. On downhills it truly isn't a problem, however. I hope that helps!
if you can get past the $15k MRSP.. you have to deal with servicing, etc over time... e.g. dont expect to be able to source motor or battery parts in 5+ years.. you'll basically have to strip this down for parts when the motor or batter reaches end of life (or out of warranty)
Total BS.... I work at shop that sells Spesh, SC, Marin, and others and Specialized definitely has the fastest and most generous warranty support even with the shortages (with SC being a close second). Yes the belts on the gen 2 bikes were a problem but they always provided replacements quickly. That said if I were buying an ebike today it'd be a Marin Alpine trail
Seems like a lot of money but considering all the tech involved it really isn’t. It’s really a motorbike that you pedal and motorbikes aren’t cheap either. If I had the money this is what I would get. Unfortunately there is my daughter’s college tuition to pay for so I’ll stick to my base model Stumpjumper for now.
We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

@@sprucelodge i'm 5″7. I could have also picked the S3 but decided to go for the S2 due to the lighter weight. If you are not going to share the bike with someone a head taller than you then pick the S2.
@@youjean83 same height as you, and just pulled the trigger on an S3. I have a 2019 Turbo Levo in M. I thought the S2 might feel a bit restrictive in cockpit size, where the M is fairly generous and I think I could have also managed the S. Any thoughts now that you’ve had the S2
@@alexevans1424 that's good to hear since I've had many issues with my Gen 2 Levo. BTW can you please tell me your height? I am considering an S4 Levo Pro. I am 5'11

Hi Alex , great review, sounds very impressive !! A bike for all occasions ! Hopefully in a weeks time ! I'm taking another bike that you reviewed not so long ago the ; Santa Cruz "Bullit " for a Demo ! Comparison ? I've also tried the Orbea Rise which was excellent !! Your thoughts !!!! I ride a lot of natural rocky, rooty, north & west Yorkshire where I live near Skipton. Cheers 👍👌🌲🌲🌲🚵🌲🌲🏞️😎
I Andrew, thanks for the comment. I guess the Bullit and Turbo Levo aren't quite the same thing, with the Bullit's weight and general feel giving it a more descent focus. Out of the two, however, I would recommend the Turbo Levo - it's a bit lighter (out of the models I rode) to ride, is more fun, but its geometry is more progressive. The Spesh is a truly great bike!
Hi Alex, I've gone for the Turbo levo expert gen 3 ! One question ? ; I'm looking at having bigger rotors as I do some long descents & have the Scram codes on the expert model ! & Would keep the rotors cooler !! Your thoughts ?
Don't doubt it. But would rather wait for the Pole Voima at half the price with 190mm travel with the same motor fully enclosed and larger battery.....
To each their own, but there is no way I'm spending that much money on a bicycle... even though I could afford it. I couldn't care less about electric pedal assist bikes vs bikes and people are free to ride whatever they want to ride as long as they're off of the couch.
Big problem today is there are no bikes to demo here. I have a gen 2 levo, like it, but don't like long chainstays. Looking at fezzari wire peak pro, looks good on paper, so what do you do drop the money wait 6 months and find out I should have paid double amount for Gen 3 levo?
Unlike a lot of this comment section I am not judging the price of this machine nor am I doubting the quality and integrity of this review. But to really convince me, and I would say this with every review as bold as this one, put your money where your mouth is!
Hi Simon, thanks for your comment. I would love to put my money where my mouth is, but you'd need to speak to my bosses and persuade them to pay me more!
I think it's simply stupid to pay this kind of money for a bike! And I love bikes but €14000 is just non sense! Like others have said, you can buy 3 very good bikes for this price. Even 2 EMTB top spec like YT, Canyon, Vitus, Nukeproof...
I don't understand the need for all that electric power...? It's not hard for other companies to add more powerful motors. The question is: why? Maybe I'm missing something in the MTB world (I'm mainly in the road and gravel world) but I believe the need isn't for more electric power but availability and proper pricing of bikes - at this point. Affluent people will buy this bike and it will rarely get used because they aren't hardcore MTB riders. Hardcore MTB riders won't see any value and will buy something else. So, where is the market for this? Or is this just a showcase for Specialized: not really to sell a lot but to show tech that will eventually trickle down to their more reasonable models?
eMTBs are a godsend for us older riders who no longer have the ability or desire to grind up trails on climbs of thousands of feet. So a ride goes from being a sufferfest to fun day out on the bikes. It's still pretty hard work overall but doable and so much fun. eMTB are a hoot. I ride gravel too and have a Diverge. No motor. Love that bike too and don't see the need for e-assist for a bike like that. The Brose motor makes good power but more importantly the power delivery is very smooth. Big factor for larger riders is the big battery.
ive seen a few of these bikes in the bay area. they do get ridden and they are sold out. i cant rly afford it either though. above 5k for a mtb seems crazy. these will be out dated in 2-3y and dont hold price like a car
@@kangsterizer Yeah I do wonder about how fast the tech is evolving. Agree the bike will be dated in some years, but it's pretty good for me and should stay that way for awhile. I think eventually the battery will be part of the frame and there will be regenerative braking, but I may have died of old age by then.....!
@@rc51bigdaddy No, I get it for older/injury-recovering riders. I was referring to the extreme power of this eMTB - I think it's too much. eMTBs work for some riders but I just don't see the use of having this much power; it might even be dangerous. Maybe it's the same reason why people buy cars with 500+ HP...
I own this exact bike. I'm curious if this guy normally rides a fully rigid steel hardtail single speed. That's the only way I can figure he would call this bike plush with good small bump compliance. How much did Specialized pay you to spew that load of tripe?
Bike Radar and most publications have lost all credibility!! the most expensive bike made better ride the best. No bike is worth $15000. What a fucking joke
Regardless of ride quality, that much money for a 50 lb bike seems ludicrous. This bike is also obviously getting hyped in strange ways, including some claiming it weighs only 38 lbs, and can be ridden with no assist.
Pretty sure it’s OK to think that something is the best without actually owning it. The Tesla Model S is the best car I’ve tested but I don’t own it. I also agree with Alex, the Levo is exceptional - But why does he have to buy the bike to prove it to anyone? Don’t think that’s a fair ask. Maybe he is happy with his current bike 👍 Peace, Rob
@@RobRidesEMTB he does say "best for the price" in the review and i just dont believe that. its the best "if you dont consider the price", probably, yes. but not best for the price by any means.
@@RobRidesEMTB Sure it's ok but that's not a 'review', it's marketing. Product testing should consider ownership long term. In that context, Teslas are most certainly not the 'best'. If you've got £14,000 to spunk on a bicycle than might be 'obsolete" in a few years then fair enough, but 99% of your audience doesn't, particularly at the moment. Cheers 👍🏻
Hi Celyn, thanks for your comment. As I said to another commenter, I'd love to put my money where my mouth is but you'd need to speak to my bosses and organise a pay rise. When Top Gear (or any motoring show) reviews McLarens, Lamborghinis, Ferraris and the like, the presenters and reviewers aren't expected to own or go out and buy those cars to validate their opinions and thoughts. I'm lucky enough to have tested the top-spec Turbo Levo, and it turns out that it is ridiculously good. I also disagree that this is marketing. BikeRadar's reviews are entirely independent and free from bias or otherwise. This review is the result of a lot of testing, and my thoughts on the bike are entirely my own. The only thing I will admit to is holding on to this bike for waaaay longer than I probably should have because I just can't stop riding it! I hope that helps, Alex.
@@alexevans1424 Sure, I was only half teasing, hope it was amazing while it lasted. However, your Top Gear analogy doesn't hold water as the old Top Gear presenters can afford hypercars and the maintenance if they wanted to splurge. I’m an overweight dude. Rocked hard tails my whole life. Getting old and fat after injuries from work and life. Gained 40 lbs and having a hard time losing weight with the extra weight bearing up my joints. Two steps forward one back. I’m thinking an ebike may help me get out and push my own limits to lose weight without too much wear and tear on my legs and knees. Feet too as I’ve shattered my foot as a wrestler when going and pigeon toed as a kid. So I’m thinking maybe I’m an overweight guy now just trying to get out and have fun while exercising. And not making my friends wait on my fat ass. I’m betting a few of those fat guys are trying to do the same as me. Get back into it. While still enjoying some new tech and not buying a motorcycle. Thoughts?
@@alexevans1424 surely there have been better descending bikes that you’ve ridden, like DH bike? And cmon how can you really talk about climbing performance of en ebike? What’s the climbing performance of a ktm 250? Plus it’s value is so terrible, 👎
@@MarioXcore1 thanks for your comment. My assessment is made in the context of the Turbo Levo being a trail bike, and in my opinion it truly redefines how a trail bike should and could descend. I agree, DH bikes will descend better, yes. I can talk about the climbing performance an ebike - there are plenty of factors that will dictate how well it climbs such as wheelbase, rear and front centres, seat tube angle, top tube length, suspension kinematics, motor power and delivery, weight distribution, etc. When you've ridden a load of ebikes back-to-back the differences are stark. As for value, check out my full review on BikeRadar.com where I touch on this subject in detail. Cheers.

Hey @@wowser2009, I'm pretty happy with the cockpit size on my S2. Absolutely no complaints here.
Hi, I'm 190cm and this is the range between S5 and S6, which one should I choose?
Yes im convinced, but im not willing to part with 15K for a bike that only has minor improvements (Apart from suspension) over my 2019 Levo
how many motors have you gone through i would go for nicolai GT1 EBOXX bike with bosch motor still have some money left
Hi Ashley. The bike is still on its original motor and drive belt and as of right now, has clocked up 842km.
@@alexevans1424 that's good to hear since I've had many issues with my Gen 2 Levo. BTW can you please tell me your height? I am considering an S4 Levo Pro. I am 5'11
HI @@cheres79 I'm 178cm tall and was riding and S4. It felt like the perfect size. I hope that helps!
Convinced ,👍👍😛have expert on order covid back up😷who knows when it will arrive 😭have 2020 expert with fox 38 on front but this new version seems to blow it away if u are a ripper, what size u like?
Thanks for the comment. For correct sizing, I'd check out Specialized's website. I'm 178cm and found the S4 to fit perfectly. Cheers!
Brilliant sense of humour Alex 😅
Some class replies here in the comments .
Just bought a 2022 for £5499
Didn't realise it had electric gears and post aswell 😁
Why can't you review the standard 'basic' Levo? most people, myself included, can't afford the crazy price tag of the S Works
Don't doubt it. But would rather wait for the Pole Voima at half the price with 190mm travel with the same motor fully enclosed and larger battery.....
If it was half the price, I’d have bought a Voima. Turns out a Voima is £3k MORE than the Lego comp 2022 :)
Comparison old as time but still can’t believe you can buy a nice dirt bike for a fraction of the price of this bike
Sick price.
Just got the 2022 turbo levo s works. Magical. It is unbelievable, mind blowing.
Diet-y?!
Hi Thim. Thanks for your comment. I would recommend waiting to have a test ride on the Gen 3 Levo before deciding which bike to buy. Cheers!
Hi Alex, saw you rode a S4. What is your own height?
Hi Johann, I'm 178cm tall. Cheers!
I think it's simply stupid to pay this kind of money for a bike! And I love bikes but €14000 is just non sense! Like others have said, you can buy 3 very good bikes for this price. Even 2 EMTB top spec like YT, Canyon, Vitus, Nukeproof...
Lol their out here ripping people off about £13000 no thanks day light robbery
It's just a specialized.
S3 vs s4
Hahaha! The price!😅
If you have a full bike licence this would be a very commited purchase indeed.
Plenty of other decent mountain bikes out there for $3,000-5000
$15,000 is ridiculous but I know people will still buy it…
Thats called a car
Regardless of ride quality, that much money for a 50 lb bike seems ludicrous. This bike is also obviously getting hyped in strange ways, including some claiming it weighs only 38 lbs, and can be ridden with no assist.
That's the Levo SL, not the Levo
@@zacweggeland9912 At 15k, it damn well OUGHT to be an SL, and weigh less!
Alex should put his own money where his mouth is, otherwise it's just shilling ;-)
Cheers and keep reminding yourself and team that many of us want a bit of balance, not just bike porn nor product placement. BTW been a keen reader and viewer of Bike Radar for many a mile 👍🏻

Dude you got yourself a motorbike ...
Dude if you have suspension and disk brakes you got yourself a motorbike. Clunkers r da real mtbz.
Nothing makes me laugh like seeing some overweight dude in full downhill armor riding his Ebike on my local XC trails. Its literally irony on wheels.
Thoughts?
@@ztrippin7374 Brilliant comment .... Thanks for convincing me I'm on the right path 👍
You could buy 2-3 bikes and a car for that cash.
You could also buy almost 85 000 muumitikkaris for that price.
You could buy 8.6 2008 147,000 mile Volkswagen Caddy vans as well, but I only need one.
Work harder.
Best “bike” he’s ever ridden. Sorry gents but this “review” is 👎👎
Hi Mario. Thanks for you comment. Why do you think this review is 👎?
Cheers.
