PT Barnum's whale captures made Seaworld look like a luxury spa. The beluga's he kept at the museum began BOILING ALIVE IN THEIR TANKS. Someone broke the wall of their tank to try and show some 'mercy' but they beached and ended up falling as the museum collapsed. Horrific stuff.

I’m from CT, please disregard the CT resident above thats having a stroke while attempting to type. PT Barnum is a huge part of Bridgeports history but almost everyone recognizes the inhumane aspects of his circus. Growing up a town over from bridgeport, to me it felt like the focus was more on Tom Thumb and the circus as a whole and PT Barnum was just the guy in the background making it all happen. But that’s just my experience.

And this is why I can't, "get over it, it's just a movie," with 'The Greatest Showman.' Spectacular performances, especially by Jackman, but it's just more revisionist history that, despite it being "just a film," people will latch onto and believe as truth because it's, "based on a true story." No, it's based on the lies Barnum wanted the public to believe while being an absolutely appalling person. There are plenty of people who can love the movie as a film, and detest the man, but that's not going to be the majority of people. On top of that, it's very existence in the way it portrayed Barnum says that, the people who made the film are either wilfully ignorant of the truth of Barnum, or they cosigned the racist shiesty things he stood for. Either way, not a good look imo.

As this very video explains “the greatest show on earth” moniker started after barnums death when ringling brothers, Barnum and bailey merged. That’s 8 men. Are they all evil racists or do you think maybe humans are complicated. Greatest Showman wasn’t “about” any of them. Just a movie about the circus. In short get over it, it’s just a movie

My parents took me and my siblings to see the P.T. Barnum Circus(Later renamed the Barnum & Bailey Circus) when they came into town when I was 11 years old back in 2015 and I remember that I was crying and wanted to leave during the performance so badly due to the treatment of the animals. Some of the animals were whipped so bad during the performance that they flinched. I remember that during the performances, the tigers were sitting on their stools that their trainer has them sit on and we’re doing what they were trained to do. And they were just getting whipped something awful. And another trainer went up to one of the camels and spat right in its face for no reason. And during the elephants performance, I could see that the elephants had those shackles that have the spikes on their feet. Due to the brightness of the lights, I could also see that one of the elephants was bleeding from its foot and was limping the entire performance. I’m glad that this circus got shut down because no animal deserves such awful treatment 😔💔

I think people still enjoy being "conned"--giving the "reality TV" craze. I see very little difference. As much as people might like to believe those featured on these shows are as they appear--it's NOT REALITY. Maybe some of it is ( the challenges that "little people" deal with in a world made for those of regular height, etc and TH-cam channels that cover children with various conditions and the parents who are raising them). Most is downright STAGED. We NEVER openly were shown the dark side of the Duggars, nor the Kardashians without makeup. I think despite our technical advances, human nature remains the same. We still want to be entertained, the chance to see the unusual and abnormal and to wrap our heads around the bizarre. P T Barnum made it possible for the humans in his shows to make a decent living--in a time they otherwise couldn't have. As for animals--humans have tons more knowledge about the animal kingdom now than they did in the mid 1800's....in part because of captivity and museums. We're all a mixed bag of positive and negative traits. P T Barnum was a man of the times he lived in and a whole lot better of a human than many in the history books. It's generally not advised to try to judge anyone without considering the historical setting, common thoughts and beliefs held at that time and how they contrast to today's. The man was faithful to his wife, he paid his entire crew and piqued human curiousity and filled a need in what otherwise was a difficult existence without the comforts, luxuries and the things we take for granted today. The very fact the circus survived for over 100 years is testimony to his genius. He brought his performance to Abraham Lincoln and Queen Victoria!
How many reality TV shows have accomplished THAT?

It kind of sucks that such a great movie, and actors and songs needed to base their script on this wretched person.
But lets be honest, you look back at any of those people living at the time, most of them did horrible things to people.
Barnum wasnt the only one who had a circus of curiositys and neither was he the only one who mistread animals, exotic or otherwise.
It would be fair to assume that that particular era was filled with exploitation of people and resources, slavery, scams from the simple to the complex, untold levels of racism and massacres.
And guess what its still going on. People have just figured new and better ways not to get caught is all. Same problems, different eras

I grow seriously tired of the people that declare him a racist. And even more of the people that call him a hypocrite for opposing slavery (yes there are some). After a certain length of time, a person's entire life gets compressed into itself, and people either look solely at the good or solely at the bad. And if the good and bad contradict, it's not because the person grew and changed, regretting past actions and working hard to atone, it's because the person is a hypocrite who publicly opposes something while trying to exploit it for personal gain.

A Google search would have told you that. Despite what Americans apparently believe there are other countries in the world. The video should be corrected.

@@fishcakepro I read it and you were right. He mistreated the people he enslaved. Honestly I am of course not surprised as enslavers notoriously brutally mistreated people who were enslaved by them such as by brutally beating them with whips or separating them from their families which were of course among the horrors of slavery that made it immoral and wrong along with of course those who were enslaved not being free and were also at the complete mercy of those who enslaved them.

@@fishcakepro this also makes me doubt his supposed remorse for what he had done. Maybe he only feigned remorse or repentance in a attempt to improve his reputation among abolitionists and those who opposed slavery. In that case he would be just like all the countless other enslavers as they showed no remorse or regret for enslaving and mistreating countless innocent people and remained unrepentant and racist for the rest of their lives.
