I studied this piece years ago while studying piano at a university. I had never really listened to Respighi, but this piece really turned me onto his music. And it's a rather difficult piece to bring out that melody and make it sing; you did it MAGNIFICENTLY!!! I never really accomplished this piece, but after hearing you, I'm very much inspired to start working on it again. I haven't played piano in over 15 years, however. It's time to start again.
The popularity of Respighi's orchestral works has tended to overshadow his other works. I do believe this is the first time I have heard this work, and I am mumble mumble years old.
Until now I've always held the idea I would never confuse French vs German vs English, etc. Would never have thought "Italian" as Impressionist. My ignorance. Many thanks for this novel 2-part tutorial. Very effective. Sign me Still Learning.
The resonance of the very high notes gives it a beautiful breathy sound which I think is just exquisite. Congratulations, your performance was beautiful.
Paul, you are so fabulous!! First of all, this is a great introduction to a composer that I have not studied. What a beautiful Nocturne and your performance was just exquisite....full of tender emotion and executed so perfectly!! I love the way you perform the piece twice, first the visual of just your hands, then the music score to follow. I just loved it!! Bravo Paul!! ~Jackie
This is incredible. Such a beautiful piece, I can't belive people can play songs like this (3:25 :O). I've been playing for 2 years (some progress videos on my channel) and I feel like this song is probably 10 or 15 years away from me. Onward and upward! one day.
I'm struggling a bit with the pedal markings. If I adhere to them to retain the beautiful left hand then it sounds rather blurry to me. Are you flutter pedaling? Any suggestions? I can't stop practicing this piece!! Thank you thank you thank you.
I would say it’s of moderate difficulty. Nothing like the Chopin Ballades, for example. Maybe like some Debussy pieces, perhaps Reflections in the Water. The Notturno does require some nimble fingers, and large hands help in a few spots. I think the biggest requirement is not technical but interpretive. Most performances seem to me to rather mechanical, or else overly romanticized. Either way, it misses the charm of this little gem of music.

dougalina123 hey, one year passed since you wrote this. Did you start playing again?
It's been 4 years. Did you start playing again?
@@AnAppleSlice I guess we have to live without any answer
How unfulfilling, huh? There’s something so beautiful about this, I can’t describe it
it has been 6 years
have you mastered it yet?
It has been 7 years now, how's your progress going? Have you started?

Beautiful piece, beautiful playing. I haven't heard of this before. Nice to discover new repertoire. I'll add this one to my "repertoire-to-do" list.
Tugging my heartstrings Paul! This one one of, if not the last pieces I studied with my one and only piano teacher back in the day.

I sure agree with you, Jackie. This was a wonderful discovery for me.

What a brilliant piece by a relatively unknown composer.
You are awesome!
Beautiful. Thank you!
Ugh your piano is so gorgeous
Thanks for sharing Paul ☺
It's mesmerizing !

Great performance
I really like your videos! If you'd just use a liiittle bit less reverb it would be fabulous - the sound is a bit too "drowned".
How difficult is this piece? What grade/pieces can I compare it to?
Franz Liszt-Chopin i would say you can compare it to some works from ravel, maybe jeau d‘eaux, so pretty difficult
@@marlonberger2418 no, that not close. Perhaps grade 6 but not quite 7.
