I actually really like eddy interpretation, it’s expressive and romantic, despite some mistakes and stuff, I actually really enjoy eddy’s performance, very powerful performance
6:24 - This is so true for every romantic piece. Watching someone play something like this makes them seem so emotional but you really have to stay grounded while playing and focus because it's easy to start slipping away from the intonation or get lost in thought and forget where you are.

I'm a finn like Sibelius was so this is a concerto I've heard played so many times and so many ways. One of my favorite things about this piece is actually that I feel like it provides so much room for artistic interpretation. Different violinists bring forth different emotional focus. Some are more wistful, others desperate, others nostalgic, angry, even mad. And so on. One thing that I feel many great violinists/directors actually discard is the umh... Reflective, slow, dreamy quality that the composition often dives into. I've noticed many violinist feel like they need to play certain parts super super fast and without stops - and hey, I'm not a violinist so maybe that's what the notes tell you to do!! But I gotta admit, I really enjoy the versions with more patience and prolonged notes and pauses, where the melody sometimes quiets down and for a while you almost feel like the orchestra is falling asleep from how dreamy and deep inside their thoughts they are ☺️❤️ I think twoset did this thing really well. Tranquility.
Twoset videos introduced me to you, and I remember thinking, 'wow, Ray is a world-class soloist but he is approachable, funny, and humble.' I'm not a violinist, but I enjoy watching your videos and getting a little insight into what it must be like to achieve such an elite level in musicianship. Wishing you the best!
Let us not forget the fact that Eddy is not playing on the 'soloist' level violins. He still manages to produce such beautiful music, one can only imagine how good it would sound on an actually great violin (not saying that his violin is bad, just saying that it would be so much better on a soloist's violin)
I was really happy when I watched the live stream and saw Eddy's performance. He said he had more time preparing for the drop and the live stream just proved he'd practiced it a lot. I had goosebumps tbh. I don't play the violin and don't know much about music theory or anything, but I had so many feelings then. And G, seeing Ray react to the drop is even more InTeREsTInG. I feel so much respect for all the musicians who have put effort into classical music and made it more relevant to us. Thank you guys, I love you.
There's no fjords in Finland Ray... I think Eddy captures very well the mental landscape of the piece - finnish nature and emotions. His tempo is correct, you should not play this too fast. For me the beginning sounds and feels like you are alone in a wintry forest when it snows in the dark. The snow and snowing softly enlightens the dark and muffles away all sounds. Time doesn't matter. You can feel the tranquility, silence and beauty around you and in you. Yet you are alone but somehow connected. It makes you feel warm although its freezing and cold. But then the icy wind breaks the athmosphere, and like in life, you struggle to wander home.
I really loved the way Ray talked about the magic of music and the little spaces in between the notes, my violin teacher says the same! This constructive criticism is great.
The difference in the sound of their violins when ray plays his bits is just. WOAH. amazing. Its the type of violin as well as violinist eh? Still ed and brett are amaaaazing violinists too. Loved this reaction video
I've always thought of the Sibelius concerto as like three different winter scenarios. 1.) The first one is like the beginning of a film, where it's snowing heavily but gently, and everything just gradually comes into more focus over the course of the movement. 2.) A quiet, clear, mellow winter's day. 3.) You're driving your car in white-out conditions and have no idea where you are on the road.
Thanks a lot for this video, Ray, it was both informative and enjoyable to watch ! 😊👌 I really appreciate how you focused on the most difficult and/or beautiful passages of this concerto and brought your experience as a soloist who's performed it countless times. Eddy will be happy to hear your compliments about his playing, and at the same time I'm certain than he will be very grateful for the pieces of advice you gave to help him improve his rendition of this beautiful piece. And of course, your comments will also be helpful for all the other violinists looking for guidance while they're practicing it. Awesome video, thanks again ! 🤗
I watched the performance my eyes closed and Eddy captured our melancholy state of mind perfectly (I'm a Finn). That's the thing about music. It speaks to people, and when it's done with emotion and passion, it's just incredible. Then there is the technical side and it's always interesting to see someone with excellent skills to constructively assess what has been done. So it was interesting to first just listen and appreciate and feel (I did cry too because he just captured the emotion so well), and then watch this a month or so later, and see what made it so difficult and where he could still improve. Thank you for this reaction. :)
I was really astounded by how much went right during Eddies performance. I guess by now we all know his strenghts and weaknesses as a performer, and we do know that he is not trying to be a concert violonist. But for a performance among friends, and that is what I would label his community, it was really, really good. It would probably take him another year of intense practice to get it flawless. But that is just not worth the effort if you don't plan to play this publicly for money.
Thank you, Sir, for the very educational review of TwoSet 3 Mil Sibelius Subscribers Concert. People these days don't know what "constructive" criticism is however it appears to me that you do. Well done and well said, Sir. I appreciate you. May peace, excellent health, and joy always be your portion. (Smile)
In preparation for their 3M drop, I listened to several artist's renditions of this piece (numerous times!). Even though I know Eddy wasn't flawless in his performance (and he does too, btw), there were parts I know he absolutely nailed and was delighted for him. I love Ray Chen, but this video of him reviewing TwoSet gave me butterflies like I was their Asian mom, LOL. (Also, they were both playing on their brand new "babies" which still probably hadn't totally 'opened up' yet). Good job Ray!
Yeah, I've discovered classical music with them, (EVEN THOUGH IT'S IN ENGLISH AND I'M A POOR FRENCH FROG WHO STRUGGLES WITH THE GRAMMAR), and I'm just so happy that a wonderful musician like Ray Chen recognises their hard work, through this video - which I'm sure will help a lot of violinists !
This was honestly so nice to watch and hear, Eddy and Brett getting congratulated by someone who has so much experience and honestly so much humility. I'm sure they would love to hear all the constructive criticism
To have a world class soloist say that you have done a good job on an incredibly hard piece is such a compliment. To me it would be an honor to receive some constructive criticism from someone like Ray.
Thank you for the elaborated review. I now can really appriciate what Eddy has done without support of a complete orchestra but only Brett who has done a great job too.
At first I became a fan of TwoSet because they were funny but after listening to their take on Maggie Lu's piece and now those wonderful first measures of the Sibelius the comedian side of them is receding and the virtuoso side of all of you is shining freely! Kudos!
You can really feel how much emotion there is behind Eddy's playing. He really loves this piece. I think in one of their videos he said that if he would never play violin again, this would be the piece he'd play last. I really felt that. Personally, I feel perfection is overrated. If you wanted everything perfect, you can get a computer to play the notes "perfectly". I feel this was a really good performance with a lot of expression and emotion, a lot of love, which I value very highly. Well done Eddy!
Its great that TH-cam breaks the walls between professionals like Ray and the rest, so we can also learn from him. Wish more like Hilary and Ray can do the same.
What a treat it is to listen to this! The sound of Ray Chen's violin gives me chills - so wonderful! And Eddy has a really lovely tone on his violin, and I enjoy the way his vibrato sounds. Bravo, boys!

I- I'm impressed of that pun. Nicely done 🙌
Definitely a twosetter .....
@@salmabassiony5998 Learning from the pun senpais hahaha
Oooh thank you guys!
For 4 mil subs we want a quartets of Ray, Eddy, Hillary and Bret.
Who will be playing viola then 🤔
@@sanchiahk brett. He has the viola birthday gift anyway 😂
@@sanchiahk All of them will play violin, I'm guessing. None of them really plays cello or double bass either.
I would say the Vivaldi’s 4 violin concerto
@@KingstonCzajkowski you don’t typically find double bass in common quartets.
I actually really like eddy interpretation, it’s expressive and romantic, despite some mistakes and stuff, I actually really enjoy eddy’s performance, very powerful performance
When Ray says "Dang, those facial expressions!"...
lol Ray slipping in and out of his American accent to his Australian one 👀
6:24 - This is so true for every romantic piece. Watching someone play something like this makes them seem so emotional but you really have to stay grounded while playing and focus because it's easy to start slipping away from the intonation or get lost in thought and forget where you are.
Alternative title: Ray Chen gives Eddy a free masterclass on Sibelius violin concerto
ray: I tend to break hairs when I play
but actually what he meant: I tend to flex on you every time I play but the hair breaking is the most easiest thing you can decipher, peasants(insert villain laugh)
Cant wait for twoset to react to this
That "Sorry Eddy" is scary! Please tell me you aren't roasting him! 🤣
I woke up at 3am to watch them and I was soooo happy!!! 🥰
Europe gang!
Europeeeee :DD
Europe gang here as well ! 😊👋
(I didn't even go to sleep that night, I was too afraid of not waking up and missing the livestream... 😄)
*laughs in asia gang*
4 am here just to get ready as it was at 4:30. But was an amazing first concert for me.
eddy: visibly suffering
ray: smiling, cackling quietly, egging for more
Halfway through this video I remembered that ray is actually Australian, that accent of his likes playing hide and seek.
What twoset did and I think that was their goal from the start is to introduce classical music to people like me. While I was never ignorant to this "genre" I didn't listen to it as much as I'm doing now. And that's because of these guys. I would not certainly listen to Hilary, you Ren and handful of others if I didn't see their channel.
Thanks to all of you.
Yeah 🙏❤
I listen a lot but to piano pieces, especially Valentina Lisitsa who is a Vengerov on the piano in my opinion. She is phenomenal
It's a major flex to have Ray Chen take the time to dedicate an entire video to discussing your performance.
Next up:
Sibelius reacting to Ling Ling reacting to Hilary Hahn reacting to Twoset reacting to Ray Chen reacting to 3 mil
I'd totally love to see that fr though
4 AM??? That's even half an hour later than the sibelius drop was - I NEED SLEEP GUYS XD
Yup, im also in that timezone... I have school tomorrowwww, nooooo :((
And yet, here I was, watching this live at 4 am. And here I am, at 8 am, still wandering in the comment section...
I'm moving next week, nothing's ready at home, this video is the perfect excuse to procrastinate. 😁 (And also because I have insomnia, what else can I do at 4 am ? I'm not going to move the furniture in the middle of the night !)
Yeah, I needed sleep and just watched it, already sleep deprived shouldn't stay awake until 4 am 😂
I can't wait to see Ray treat Eddy like a viola😆😆
Haha
I agree, violas (and violists) deserve all the indulgence
the accent change at 10:45 though. it's so funny because it changes back and forth in the middle of his sentences lmao
So many of the interpretive things Ray is saying are what my bassoon teacher taught me. And I was just an education major, not a performance major. This is teaching at its finest. This is why I am a teacher.
Their friendship is so wholesome! This is such positive constructive criticism!
Actually more like constructive Comments than constructive criticism, as the way Ray has spoken....
"A world class soloist youtuber doing a reaction video"
Everyone: *yesss*
Now I feel terrified of ever playing this. If a soloist says it’s hard, US PEASANTS ARE DEAD
But it’s worth trying since it will stretch you further than you ever thought you could go. It will make everything else seem so much easier. Go for it!
@@minimouse7890 awwww tysm for the encouragement, n yes I'd love to try that someday when my skill level is up to it XD. it's on my list of pieces that I'd love to play in the future :D
@@abigail40 Me too! I’m working on Tchaikovsky for an exam right now, and it’s stretching be beyond my wildest dreams. So why not imagine I could *attempt* Sibelius too? I’ll never play it on a stage so nothing to fear from giving it a go.
@@minimouse7890 wao noiceeee :D which piece tho?
As an amateur who has performed the Bruch in public (ok quite a while ago now...).... I wouldn't attempt this even in the privacy of my living room.
Ray was very encouraging with his feedback for TSV, just like Professor Chloe.
Worry not about the "sorry Eddy" - every critique is a perfect masterclass-style 'here's how you could make it even better than it already is'.
But I gotta admit, I really enjoy the versions with more patience and prolonged notes and pauses, where the melody sometimes quiets down and for a while you almost feel like the orchestra is falling asleep from how dreamy and deep inside their thoughts they are ☺️❤️
I think twoset did this thing really well.
Poor Eddy. I can't wait to see Ray roasting the performance ( which I love and re-watched multiple times after the live stream)
Ray's Australian accent comes out more and more as this goes along. It's so genuine!
So appreciative that you gave an honest reaction, with some constructive pointers. I can't abide overly-gushing or white-washing reactions.
American ray 10:08
Aussie ray 11:05
I love his accent
Next vid: Ling Ling laughs at Twoset reacting to Ray Chen's reaction to Twoset
I've always thought of the Sibelius concerto as like three different winter scenarios.
1.) The first one is like the beginning of a film, where it's snowing heavily but gently, and everything just gradually comes into more focus over the course of the movement.
2.) A quiet, clear, mellow winter's day.
3.) You're driving your car in white-out conditions and have no idea where you are on the road.
Sounds like our winters here in Finland. 😅
Thanks a lot for this video, Ray, it was both informative and enjoyable to watch ! 😊👌
I really appreciate how you focused on the most difficult and/or beautiful passages of this concerto and brought your experience as a soloist who's performed it countless times.
OML that description 😂😂😂 Go easy on Eddy, Ray! Can't wait to watch this!
I love my youtube bubble, can't wait!
Wouldn't actually have minded watching the whole thing over again with Ray. He ain't got no time for that, lol.
Ray Chen is such a cool dude and so generous with his knowledge. Great video.
This was a great reaction video by Ray. He gave some really good critiques. Hopefully Twoset will see this video and do a react to it as well.
12:04 Ray stating how terribly difficult the 3rd movement is meanwhile nailing it. 🤌✨
(Smile)
Ray C is so sweet! I Love him and the comraderie with 2 set!!! Best community and people!
It's videos like this that make us better violinist. Thank you Ray Chen and TwoSetViolin!
I will personally request a reaction from Sibelius ❤
I really love Eddy's vibrato in the opening measures, it's quite rich without being overdone
Brett and Eddie are definitely top notch musicians. Thank you Ray for the review. God bless you all.
At first I became a fan of TwoSet because they were funny but after listening to their take on Maggie Lu's piece and now those wonderful first measures of the Sibelius the comedian side of them is receding and the virtuoso side of all of you is shining freely! Kudos!
RAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME
Love from New York for you and TwoSet💜
I loved when he said "P L A Y T H E O C T A V E S F O R M E E D D Y" with red eyes HAHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣
His violin in the background! I was so anxious! 😭
The Sibelius violin concerto is my favorite concerto. And TwoSetViolin did an amazing job with it!
Who else read the "Sorry Eddy"?...yikes, hope he survives this one.
Bravo, boys!
........sorry eddy? omg whats gonna happen in this video??
Pretty sure it's a joke
I was thinking more along the lines of him unintentionally roasting but that works too (jk I know he's joking they're all friends)
