The field uniform (Camouflage) was oversized, in hot weather worn by itself in cooler weather with the service uniform (Wool uniform) underneath. The winter uniform was worn in a similar manner. There is an excellent video on TH-cam of NVA conscripts during their 18 months service which illustrates use and wear
The winter uniform or the winter jacket was always worn with an shirt and tie underneath, just like all other uniform types, the only really big difference between them is the jacket and pants (also shoes and head wear)! But thank you for the information!
