the misogynist/not misogynist dichotomy is always kinda misleading because (almost) no celebrity is gonna upfront say yeah i hate women. But if the question was instead "has donald glover said/done weird things toward black and asian women" then the answer is 100% yes. What rubs me the wrong way is that even though he doesn't do that kind of thing too much anymore, he never really acknowledges that he did weird stuff in the past but rather says that he has never been weird about women before which is again, kind of objectively false
sigh. imma just call a spade a spade: black ppl who grew up nerds and bullied for it by their community, even with growth in terms of how they view themselves and their racial identity, are just flat out insecure about their blackness and need an outside party to validate it. it’s something i had to clock within myself despite me being very attracted to black men and very much so wanting black sisterhood - it’s an insecurity issue. you want so desperately to have that community but don’t know where you fit into all of it so masquerading this pro blackness whilst never really being around blackness is a much easier task than thrusting yourself into blackness fully. that’s truly the problem with donald glover, tyler the creator, steve lacy, etc. the list goes on
CLOCK. IT. I was bullied for being a nerd but I also found other black nerds so I guess that saved me in a way, but even when I was being bullied, I never felt that insecurity in being black because truthfully I never had any allegiance or closeness to whiteness because of my nerdiness.
i really agree with that first description! i'm not black but have a lot of black friends, and among those i know people who are more drawn towards white or asian people than others due to shared interests and thus sometimes attraction. i've always noticed that some of the black men who like anime and certain cultures don't tend to have 'good experiences' with black women in their youth and are mostly attracted to asian or white women, and the odd kawaii black girl. the men i know seem to love their OWN blackness afaik but i suppose how they think about blackness as a whole is deeper than that, i wouldnt know. they listen exclusively to black artists, love their male friends, hair, fashion etc. and they're often very nice people, but the elephant in the room is that they clearly have a lot to address within themselves. having preferences borne from past experiences and upbringing makes perfect sense, but with asian women in particular it can feel like fetishisation for SURE.
Not at all. The community for black nerds is other black nerds lmfao. He’s insecure because his adoptive parents are white if I’m not mistaken. He’s basically a white man in a black man body, so it makes it hard to relate to or feel close to black people. Tyler the Creator is extremely secure in the person he is, there was a period in his early career when he wasn’t, ironically it was because of other black people and how they treat people who aren’t considered “black enough” or who “lack blackness”.
ehh i feel indifferent towards him tbh. i do think that he’s hella weird for some stuff like the whole thing asian women and his self-interview bs, but for the most part i just can’t bring myself to care
I've noticed people bring these two criticisms up but these are things he's done more than 10 years ago, it feels like people are reaching to find a reason to dislike him honestly.
@@angelr5694 A weird interview he did, still doesn't justify the hate for this guy. And if you're talking about how he wrote black woman in atlanta. He's writing from experience of growing up there, some of the black women characters were written as villains some as heroes. the idea that him writing a character doing something negative then you associating it with their race says something about you more than his writing. If there's anyone you should be mad it's tyler perry but of course he gets a pass because he's traditional in how he carries himself
@acutecloudd7970 who said they hate him? Chill out. I definitely dont like him or virtually any celebrity for that matter.. you are not entitled to criticize people if they dislike idolatry
I think of a dude who makes good sh*t but is kinda like doja cat and doesn't really connect with black people well or people well but seems cool on the surface.
Doja was different, she borderline hated black people and fully embraced the confederate side of white nationalism. Being in a chat room with racist whites as a mixed girl is just crazy af. This is just a black man that was raised by a white family. My ex had a similar disconnect.
Doja was raised by her Jewish side of the family, so it makes sense her disconnect, and if her dad influenced her in any way, it would be in South African heritage, not Black American, so she'd still have a disconnect regardless
Great video, Im a big Donald Glover fan and I love hearing criticism done so well by someone who can appreciate what an amazing artist he is while knowing he is a flawed human and that those flaws are present and explored in his works
I LOVED swarm. It reminded me of Taxi Driver, and other gritty films were the protagonist is just pure animal in the sense that they have a drive towards one thing and they can’t see anything past that. Travis may have PTSD, maybe he had a bad upbringing but that’s irrelevant cause his trauma turned him into a beast of sorts. I feel like only men get to play juicy roles like that, so I was happy to get a female show were she’s no demure or mindful, just murderous and pure instinct
That’s because Donald Glover doesn’t think the character is fictional in terms of her psyche. 😂 I firmly believe that man sees black women as animalistic. It was not hard for him to make that film. He just had to find a vehicle to reflect his opinions and beliefs. A fandom was perfect.
It hate how Swarm is described as a study of “Animal instincts” while Pearl is just a manifestation of “a girl and her terrible instincts.” Two different directors describing their similar protagonists in completely different terms.
I’m halfway through so idk if you say anything that contradicts this but I think him acknowledging how cringe he was early on would have been a long way. I used to listen to his stuff all the time but I grew out of that incel “too black for white and too white for the blacks” type of content. I think he grew out of that too but his refusal to not acknowledge how he perpetuates harmful stereotypes when he clearly tries to create art with meaning makes come off as disingenuous.
@ @ it’s a common thing black incels say to explain their lack of success in dating. Donald used to have a lot of “black girls didn’t” like me lyrics but he also dealt with a lot of racism growing up.
@@malikwilson7387 Most brothers like Donald Glover end up marrying a a black woman. He's a celebrity with a relatively unique life experience and shouldn't be compared to the average black person.
Have you ever looked into why Aaron Mcgruder stopped making The Boondocks? I hope everyone reading this goes out and votes. There are only a few days left. Also take care of your kids and don't let celebrities be your spokesperson or role model anymore
To focus on Black women Honestly I understand his disdain or frustration with Black Women, and it’s all based on experiences that HE grew up with which nobody can really take away from you. The reason I understand because we’ve all had problems with our own people and some type of way, shape or form or time it was mentioned in the video that some Black people were actually bullied, teased and treated horribly by our own and to be somewhat cynical and jaded about our experiences alike to Donald Glover as being a nerdy kid or an alternate kid. But I do believe that when you are doing successful and extremely well in your career, your problems are not invisible and you do have to be more mindful, aware and wise who you are at the core because these are the very same fans that are black women that support you. Does he owes us anything? Not exactly. but should he be mindful instead of being self-involved and self indulgent on his work and his ideal portrayals of black women? Yes. I think what’s really missing is that he doesn’t have enough compassion and curiosity about women because if you think about Issa Rae, she wrote her black/ POC male characters with curiosity and compassion but most of all with intention to have a full in-depth outline of human being with all its complexities that focus on black men. Which is something she did on purpose that rewarded her greatly in her show. I think a lot of male black writers and creators operate based on what they don’t get or what they lack in real life. Black male leads etc via its writers/creators - Maybe lack of notoriety, lack respect from others , lack of getting spotlight, lack of opportunity, and lack of quality and lack of empathy So sometimes they make the mistake of only looking at their women to fill in the voids that don’t normally get filled in real life. Sex, compassion, availability, accessibility or fun adventure as a distraction. So it always seems a bit selfish and self-absorbed when really if they can just be driven with curiosity and compassion, they probably could write some solid female characters with complexities that we can relate to . Some people like Donald Glover who think the way that he thinks only operate what suits him even if it’s unintentionally
This video helped me understand my complicated "relationship" with Donald Glover's persona and work. I've had a lot of people tell me I'm quirky like him, but I've never really vibed to his music like I did his black-centric work. He's helped me navigate anti-blackness within the black community by existing despite his appearance. However, I've always felt like he's had a weirdness around black women and colorism that I can't shake. I will say though, that for my own part as a fan, I intend to hear out any black women that has something to say about how they're represented in media. This video opened my eyes to that problem.
Off topic but your hair is EVERYTHING 🤭 Also as for my opinion on him and how he views black women, I think that you don't get accused of being biased against black women throughout your career for no reason. I don't think he "hates" black women, but it definitely wouldn't hurt for him to read a Toni Morrison book.
I would love to see a video on Issa Rae. Her and Donald Glover are two of my favorite artists in TV and music. They’re so talented but I also don’t think that means they’re beyond reproach or criticism
Issa needs to be studied. She isn’t for woman like she portrays herself to be. Her new trailer looks like a coon humiliation ritual. Her show insecure ( of all names she could have called it) was low vibrational stereotypical n unfunny she wasn’t main character energy Molly was. Issa is nasty nice n it shows
I'm only 2 years older than Donald Glover and for some reason I thought he was much younger than me? Probably because I've only had a passing interest in him and the things I've seen him in he was younger. His early "comedy" I didn't know about it definitely comes from a peak cringe/edgelord era (early 2000s).
I’m a huge fan of Donal Glover and I wasn’t aware of all these controversial things, I love black female commentary’s and I blessed to hear this conversation about Donal from one, I’ve also heard men deep dive Donal and they conveniently left out the misogyny I loved this video & deep dive wry informatived I will be subscribing I would love to hear a deep dive on issa ray, I love her work as well Thank I’m new here and staying
I loved *"ATLANTA"* only thing is, nobody I know watched it. So its kinda funny when the same people I tried to get to watch it are only now just discovering it.
Yeah, idk how you came to the conclusion that he doesn't hate black women after a really well put together and thoroughly researched video. Plenty of black men do! He chooses to make art that portrays us in a certain light and I'm not swayed by that little "uwu that hurts my feewings" quote of his. I am old as hell so I remember watching his Derreck comedy skits on ancient youtube and I have really enjoyed his shows for the most part, but I can only support someone who feels so comfortable tearing down black women (and dehumanizing/fetishizing another group of women) so much.
I can't say verbatim, formally that "HE HATES BLACK WOMEN" because I don't know this man PERSONALLY and don't want to be doxxed or sued. but like I said at the end when answering the question, his public actions and lack of accountability and acknowledgment towards his depictions of black women, the trolling, and his overall attitude to the criticism says more about his character than me making a blanket statement like that
28:30 there was also a lot of criticism/ debate among (black) autistic people on the main character showing autistic traits and how he talked about the character.
Theres no clearer demonstration of his disinterest in black women than where he ended Zazi Beetz character in season 3, rubbed me entirely the wrong way
Despite Donald’s comments about the character, Dominique Fishback brought a lot of humanity to her portrayal of Dre in Swarm. Even though she is a vicious murderer, I found myself feeling bad for Dre because of how lonely her obsession has made her, especially after Marissa’s death. When looking back on this series, I will choose to ignore Donald’s weird ass comments and focus on Dominique’s incredible performance in my interpretation of the character.
Great video Fr. I love ur perspective he is a super creative man but he does have his flaws. Also i love your hairstyle so so soooo much. That middle part go crazy fr fr
My one disparaging comment. He did a show about Atlanta but it was Soooo far from being about Georgia. He took the most sensational aspects of his home state and kinda gentrified it imo. There were so many stories he could have done about being south of the mason Dixon line, he quietly hinted at throughout the series but never made it connect. And then went to EUROPE barely scraping the surface of what he had started. Which makes me believe he has a disconnect with his roots all around (and I don't give a fk about my family name) Which raises the age old question, is Georgia in Atlanta or is Atlanta in Georgia?
this is a great point and something I wish I would've brought up in the video. I am from GA and thought he could've done way more to world build and emphasize the setting of the show. especially exploring the distinctions between Atlanta and its metro areas and the rest of GA
He raced Mike Vick outside of Suite Lounge by Georgia Tech....he did an episode at his Middle School in Stone Mountain....his rival rapper was called "Clarke County" ( based on Athens, GA two hours away)...he did an episode at Atlantic Station shopping center....he shot episodes in East Point....he shot episodes in Lithonia....he shot an episode in Cascade neighborhood....he shot an episode at Southlake Mall in Morrow.... Greenbriar Mall on Campbellton... I guess I'm saying...how much *MORE ATLANTA* do you want him to be?
@Riki-G I think he tried to do that when he went to HELEN, GEORGIA for Van's German October fest event. And when they went to the college to do the show. I think that was supposed to be Statesville, GA. Like I hear you....but realistically, the rest of Black America be on Atlanta's jock. So that's all they want. They could care less about Albany and Augusta.
Fantastic video!!! ( definitely gonna subscribe). When it comes to Donald Glover, it's a tug a war feeling ( a problematic fave you can say 😳💅🏿) . On one hand he was one of the people that opened the door for blerds ( black nerds) in Hollywood and he has work that I do connect to and appreciate cause it showed that black people aren't a monolith. At the same time, I'm not gonna let the problematic stuff he did be left unsaid or not notice, especially as an unambiguous black woman . Plus, the blerd representation he did ipen was more so from a black man lense than for other black people ( hence to criticism if he's representation of black woman) . That being said, he's a weird guy ( the good, the bad, and the ugly lol)
this also reminds me of when he was in Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl web show and sort of demonstrates the relationship between him and his black women fans. It’s like this appreciation but also knowing he’s kind of a weirdo. But this is a reoccurring theme between black women and the men in particular they are fans of. Honestly if you think about it it’s kind of wild.
@aielianna EXACTLY !!!! I like the example that you gave too and it's like you appreciate the art especially when there's not a lot to represent you but at the same time you gotta call or or hold accountable to some tomfoolery.
Excellent video. Super interesting. Donald is so multi-talented as an artist. Love Community ❤ Mr. & Mrs. Smith was such a surprise. Can't wait for season 2. I've seen the first season of Atlanta so far. It takes a lot of creative risks. It was like each episode offered a different genre. I haven't experienced anything like it before.
I think some of this comes down to the fact that someone in a society that devalues black women is going to reflect some of those values in their artistic expression. I love a lot of Donald Glover’s art, but I think part of that love involves unpacking themes in his work good and bad. When it comes to this discussion I think it’s less important to judge his personal beliefs and to rather think critically about the art he makes seeing as that’s what matters here.
@Lionfrog13 i always felt like Donal basically was Journaling on his tracks. He wasn't very unlike Drake, except arguably Drake was a little more brave about his vulnerability. The songs like The Last and I'm on it were so real that I did see his misogyny, recognize it and I was okay with it because the thing that normally stops us from being unabashedly who we are is the fear of rejection. He was himself and he weathered the comments, that takes bravery and tbh I modeled some of my life after that energy he had. I believe weird things that embarrass me sometimes for instance and, I talk about them with people when all else fails. Sometimes I look weird, and some people will forever remember those views I held or hold, but you know what? It's kind of better to get it out there and acknowledge it rather than hide it. Sometimes you gotta hear yourself say things out loud to know they sound off. Sometimes you know they sound off but you need someone else to tell you why or how. He got both I think.
Liked your video. Very well researched. Thx for including your sources on the screen. I have 2 comments, to be fair to Donald G., I don’t think the cover models, makeup artists, etc. usually get residuals on an album sales. Though as you said if it was promised (in writing), then they should receive it. Lastly, I don’t think he hates black women, but I don’t think he really knows black women. He’s been in Hollywood since his early 20s, so he has worked & lived in predominantly white spaces most of his life.
Ultimately I think ppl aren’t as honest about how limited the way you can judge where someone like him is at actually with only their art and public persona is. There’s stuff that’s fishy or weird that can understandably make ppl uncomfortable but that’s the same as being enough for anyone to make concrete conclusions about what the state of his mind is actually like the same way getting to hear him talk about it or knowing more about what he’s like in real life is like.
i love him and his work so i am definitely biased when it comes to his critiques but he definitely is some one to take with a grain of salt. great video
Perfect vision yayyy! Sorry I have used glasses for 24 years and I am glad when I learn someone has perfect vision 🤓 Also I loved your take on Glover ❤ he is one of my favourite artists and is good to have different analysis on his work.
Asian woman here, thanks so much for this well-researched video! It's clear he sees us as submissive dimwit stereotypes, which is a real bummer since I do enjoy some of his music and acting lol. Never really knew how to feel about him and I still don't exactly, but I do know a lot of friends who dislike him for his yellow fever(asian fetish) if they know him at all. Also completely off topic but your hair is so gorgeous💖 Love the way you put on those glasses when you read a quote too haha
I view him as stuck in a space where he doesn’t want to explore his insecurities about his blackness and whenever he gets the chance he does it in a patronizing way that paints women as where the issue REALLY starts when that’s just not a proper framing. Yes there is a standard of black masculinity that men are told to preform from boyhood and when they don’t they get ridiculed and I don’t blame men for having that trauma but when it leads to harmful behaviors like poor representation and his constant framing of them as the problem or his portrayal of them as either crazy and dangerous or undesirable and uninteresting than it makes it tough to see him as an ally.
He was great. My favorite. He was also a weirdo, hence his special name and he went through the same thing i did, so did tyler and earl, other wierdos. He lived a life that exposed him to other things outside of black culture and ended up as a hybrid who didnt know how to properly court young black girls. You get annoyed, you try other women and eventually you get over it. I heard him go through this in his music. As awkward as it is to look at. Some guys arent good with women and sometimes they get mad at it. Most people grow past this.
hey so i didnt even realize this video came out 4 days prior to today and i clicked on this video and it brought up some things i never even thought about before and thats great
As an Asian woman who grew up in rural Missouri and heard “Are there Asian girls here? MINORITY REPORT” almost every time I entered a party in my freshman and sophomore years of college, I’ll be honest, it was more hilarious than offensive or gross feeling 😂
I know his school was mostly white but the “I’m the only black kid here” coupled with the yearbook photo of 5 or 6 black people and 2 white people was so funny intentional or not
I’m sorry 😂 I gotta be one of those people in the comments correcting people. But as a long time fan of Star Wars, I gotta do it. Calrissian is Cal-RIZ-e-en. No Carl insight. lmao Thing is growing up, Lando was one of the few black sci-fi characters out there and I always super appreciated it. Wasn’t a huge fan of Donald’s portrayal, but I did like that he wasn’t trying to copy off of Billy Dee Williams to a tee though.
3:49 THANK YOU. I’ve been trying to explain for so long why I just CAN’T STAND standup comedy, and you expressed it perfectly in such simple terms. Different from most other forms of art, standup usually directly relies on immediate audience reaction and expectation. Because of this, there’s this specific way, inherent to the medium, in which comedians carry themselves; they all rely on similar, expectable cadences and narrative tropes, and they all share a similar brand of conceit - and, as an audience member, I find it very hard not to cringe at it. To me, it’s just unbelievably corny and condescending to be sat there and expected to laugh at someone put on there for that specific purpose.
@@FrankLee-f7y All standup. But there's definitely some people worse than others. The only comedian I do occasionally enjoy watching is Nina Conti, but her act is very unique and unconventional when compared to other standup.
all that needs to be said is that black people need to take accountability for their alienating social practices toward children who seem different or do things perceived as 'not black.' they need to learn that you can be black and be anything. additionally, anti-black black people need to take accountability for the trauma they’ve faced so they don’t become hateful and harmful to the black identity. hopefully we can these progressive and productive conversations without the typical egotistical and toxic attitude from twitter. btw i love you and your informative and funny videos!!!❤❤✨✨ *SUBBED* ✔✔
I heard he was a nerd and his Asian "fetishism" makes sense, he was like all other nerds that have a thing for Asians, mostly Japanese, women since Anime and Kung Fu movies have a number of women that are a combination of trad loyal wife and cool badass, or a Tsundere ie toxic woman that secretly likes you, all types do this, even nerds from LatAm are similar
Donald is one of many Black nerds that had a crush on the black man's biracial with a yt mother and when she didn't reciprocate he's had a vendetta against all unambiguous BW ever since even tho he never liked them☠️
I don’t think he hates black women, but i do think he has a complicated history with black women. Doesn’t make him a bad guy but it is worth mentioning for sure
Beautiful analysis video! I learned a lot about glover through it, and it made me really expand my mind on his views. I’m Filipino myself and I always thought his Filipino jokes in his raps were funny, but when you brought up how he talked about Asian women as a whole, I felt a bit off. People view Asian women as submissive and quiet, a women that will gladly give you everything. I’ve dated Asian men that treated me far worse than non Asian men because they felt like they owned me. I can’t help but feel insanely angry when people treat us like shit and still expect their own Asian princess. A lot of Asian Americans feel like they don’t have an identity too, especially in America. I’ve met hood Asians, emo Asians, geek Asians and all in between. When I talk to other Asians, I can tell that there’s an insecurity in their identity (especially with immigrant kids). Anyways, enough of my ramble. Dope ass video! I’m super excited to hear more of your opinions and your research ❤
I hate Abed from community. I was diagnosed with autism back in 1998 and everyone told me Abed is great representation. But hes just an infantilized rain man stereotype again. There is no good autistic representation. Like wheres the story of the autistic person who is used for sex like a big dumb animal, wheres the story of autistic drug addicts, wheres the story of how religion makes us feel less than. How we live in a world fundamentally antithetical to our existence. Thats my lived experience and the lived experience of alot of people i know. Idk why we gas up autistic people, telling them its a good representation, when its just Dustin Hoffman again
I only watched the first few episodes and wasn't aware that abed was autistic, I do agree that the way autism has been depicted in media has been unfavorable for the most part
I never have an opinion on Donald Glover until someone brings him up. Atlanta for me was like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I watched the first episode, they casually used the N-word and I turned them both off and never watched them again. I am aware of Atlanta's effect on culture and have seen more then a few video essays on it. I did not like the tone shift in Mr & Mrs Smith, mostly because of the original film left me with a certain expectation - action comedy - and the show felt more of a meditation on relationships. Childish Gambino is a name I knew nothing about until everyone and their auntie started talking about This is America. I watched the video and it was like 2001: A Space Odyssey, interesting visuals but I needed a tone of outside reflections to every understand what it was about. Everyone kept telling it was deep, and to me it was "meh." ( I think Pop Culture is lucky I'm not the one who defines it, because there are things that come out that mystify me as to why it caught on to so many people's imagination.) So for me Donald Glover is there. Sometimes he does stuff I like. Sometimes I simply can't find enough of anything to feel any way about it. I never care about the personal lives of any celebrity, IMO it's just no one's business. I didn't know Donald Glover was married and had kids until this video. But at least I know now where Zazie Beetz came from, I only know her from the Deadpool movie to be perfectly honest. And here's a Mandela effect for you, I did not consider her "light skinned" until you said it, Then I did a Google thing and went "Oh, okay I guess she is." I'm sure more then one person will wonder why I did not see she was light skin, and it's because she's barely a shade lighter then I am and I've never been called nor considered a light skinned black man. But having been a teenager when rap became a thing, a young man when they started calling it "Hip Hop" and over 30 when it took it's unfortunate "gangsta" turn and the n-word because a badge of honor of some kind for black people, seeing a black man feature light skinned or non-white videos isn't either a new thing or a new criticism. Unfortunately it's a fair criticism and something I wish we, black men, would wake up to and get past because it's weird we still do it. So that sums up my feelings on Donald Glover, everything around him is a more interesting conversation to me then he is.
He's a lil lame for sure especially the pseudo intellectual fake deep cringe shit he does, but I do feel he was bullied and counted out in his life and then when he finally won now everyone wanna criticize how he celebrates and who with. Like people who wouldn't have bent down to pick him up or give him a hand are now scrutinizing every aspect of how he lives
He's not above criticism. If he does misogynoir then he should most definitely be called out for it. "Black girls bullied me in school" so you've decided to take it out on the entire black female population? Not to mention you went to a black school. A black kid is going to get bullied by a black kid at a black school. If you're still holding that as an adult and letting it dictate your output then you can't be surprised when people call you out on it.
@@Des17S I didn't say he was above criticism. No one is. But I do think people hyperfixate on his shortcomings and past in a way that they wouldn't their own or if it were their "fave". As for the bullying thing that's up to him. If he don't vibe with the type of women that shit on him I say cest la vie. That's up to him. Plenty of people avoid dating certain people for even pettier reasons. Dating is all judgement and preference. If you don't wanna date him idk why you would care.
@@FencingMessiah i care because like you said he has influence. I don't care about him not dating a black woman, I care about the rhetoric he's spreading. I care about the way he portrays black women because of his internalized racism. This isn't hyper fixation. Donald went a long time in his career without getting called out for it. Even people in these comments say they don't care about the man. Racial "preferences" are not a good thing. It is fetishization and it's good if he dosen't date black women because he would just make their lives miserable with his resentment and internalized racism but he will make whatever race of woman's life miserable as well. They will never live up the stereotype that you have places upon them in your head. You're insecurity and hatred becomes their problem. If you have internalized self hatred keep it to yourself but he constantly makes content about black women.
@@Des17S this is all assumption. He could very well end up with a woman who does not care. Most don't. Plenty of worse people have endless supplies of women who couldn't give a shit about social issues. A racial fetish is meaningless if they don't treat those ppl badly idc. Black women don't really give a shit when they are the racial preference. It's hypocritical nonsense. The same with how he depicts black women in his series. If he completely didn't people would complain that he doesn't hire black women but now he does, even makes them writers on the show and it's a problem? I think it's time to accept all black women do not care about that particular depiction if they are ok with writing it. I mean the men were written terribly as well. Donald Glover is not that good a writer, actor, comedian, or musician. He's just a jack of all trades. The reason you're disappointed is because you seem to have these standards that he should meet as a writer or person but he's just flawed and less skilled than you think he should be.
@@FencingMessiah I'm not gonna read all that. I used to watch his comedy. He said he was bullied by a girl. Black women have called out the way he portrays black women and if he cared, he would listen. If he dosen't then people will continue to call him out and it just is what it is. Nobody would complain if he didn't hire black women. He had a black woman the main character in his show. Purposefully. Like...purposefully. Especially on Swarm. Keep your self hatred to yourself and you won't get called out. But if you put it out there, you can't be mad when people call out the misogynoir. I see a bit where you said black men were written bad. 1. Even if that were true, that dosen't dismiss the self hate allegations lol. 2. The black men were written in both positive and negative lights showing the complexity of black male beings beyond stereotypes. I skipped to the last part. "He has flaws". Yeah and I'm allowed to call out those issues when they hit the screen and are damaging for a whole community. I'm allowed to criticize him dude. I'm gonna go back to the top. "He could very much end up with a woman that dosen't care.". Why would I want anyone to go through that? No woman wants to be a fetish. That's weird and harmful. How about instead of fetishizing other races of women to fulfill his self hatred he just takes his own advice and...goes to therapy. Also you're talking about flaws as if they're not something to be worked through. Um these "flaws" aren't natural. They're not like freckles, you should be working to fix you flaws. (When I say I'm not reading all that, I mean I don't have the time nor attention right now so I skimmed)
Is it a foreshadow that at 1:57 you introduce his brother while mentioning they'd become long-time collaborators, but then follow up with mentioning his sister and having no mention of anything about her what-so-ever? I wonder... I'll keep watching and find out if it is.
There are terrible men, there are terrible women. All shapes, all colors. How you relate to a character *will* influence favorability. Gotta develop that androgynous mind. I will say that people who be like “I don’t think Black girls like me” reflect on how you act and what you say. Saying/doing weird things doesn’t help your case. Also if you think it’s bc you’re a nerd, maybe consider that you may have ignored the Black women who are nerds and directed more attention to other races of women. I’m not making a moral implication. But you attract what you chase. 🤷🏾♀️
I was a distant associate of Donald before he got hired to community. I even bugged him for song file he gave it to me and then dissed me on one of his early EPs. He's definitely not a misogynist. He used to do shoes at UCB with Derrick .
the misogynist/not misogynist dichotomy is always kinda misleading because (almost) no celebrity is gonna upfront say yeah i hate women.
You kind of ate me up with this comment
Definitely not speaking for all of us self-proclaimed black nerds.
Good for you.
I've noticed people bring these two criticisms up but these are things he's done more than 10 years ago, it feels like people are reaching to find a reason to dislike him honestly.
@@acutecloudd7970 self interview was during 2020. That wasn't 10 years ago. He's also written black women questionable several times since
@@angelr5694 A weird interview he did, still doesn't justify the hate for this guy.

Love love adventure time and now we can listen to all Marshall Lee albums
Yesss i love a good gritty film too
AGREED! People were like “what is Swarm about?”….and I’m like…..”ya’ll just don’t get it…”😂
That’s because Donald Glover doesn’t think the character is fictional in terms of her psyche.
How is that incel ideology though?
@ @ it’s a common thing black incels say to explain their lack of success in dating. Donald used to have a lot of “black girls didn’t” like me lyrics but he also dealt with a lot of racism growing up.

To focus on Black women
Honestly I understand his disdain or frustration with Black Women, and it’s all based on experiences that HE grew up with which nobody can really take away from you. The reason I understand because we’ve all had problems with our own people and some type of way, shape or form or time it was mentioned in the video that some Black people were actually bullied, teased and treated horribly by our own and to be somewhat cynical and jaded about our experiences alike to
Donald Glover as being a nerdy kid or an alternate kid.
Black male leads etc via its writers/creators - Maybe lack of notoriety, lack respect from others , lack of getting spotlight, lack of opportunity, and lack of quality and lack of empathy
So sometimes they make the mistake of only looking at their women to fill in the voids that don’t normally get filled in real life.
This video opened my eyes to that problem.
the fact that he’s the same age as my mom is so bizarre like what
also you are so hilarious like PLEASEEE
I know him mostly because he voiced Marshall Lee in Adventure Time (I probably heard of him songs too, but didn't know it was him)😂
Off topic but your hair is EVERYTHING 🤭 Also as for my opinion on him and how he views black women, I think that you don't get accused of being biased against black women throughout your career for no reason. I don't think he "hates" black women, but it definitely wouldn't hurt for him to read a Toni Morrison book.
beautifully said, completely agree. I should have had YOU write my answer!!! lol funny enough I'm reading the bluest eye right now! thanks so much!!
Issa is nasty nice n it shows
Love Issa and co-signing on the request for a deep dive. Not only to critique but also to understand her evolution and cultural impact.
your redditor citations are so real😭if ppl could cite reddit responses in academia the world would be a better place
I’m a huge fan of Donal Glover and I wasn’t aware of all these controversial things, I love black female commentary’s and I blessed to hear this conversation about Donal from one, I’ve also heard men deep dive Donal and they conveniently left out the misogyny

Despite Donald’s comments about the character, Dominique Fishback brought a lot of humanity to her portrayal of Dre in Swarm. Even though she is a vicious murderer, I found myself feeling bad for Dre because of how lonely her obsession has made her, especially after Marissa’s death.

He got both I think.
i love your videos, i hope more people see them 💗

I don't think he *hates* black women, but I think he doesn't think about us. We literally don't cross his mind and it shows
Liked your video.
Unrelated, but your hair is so beautiful.

I haven’t finished the video BUT Donald Glover was also in an episode of Awkward Black Girl which, was the show Issa made before Insecure.
Welp, I asked for it, and I got it. I literally can’t be mad. Thank you!

To me, it’s just unbelievably corny and condescending to be sat there and expected to laugh at someone put on there for that specific purpose.
beautifully sad, I'm glad someone gets it
All standup? Or just specific people?
@@FrankLee-f7y All standup. But there's definitely some people worse than others. The only comedian I do occasionally enjoy watching is Nina Conti, but her act is very unique and unconventional when compared to other standup.

all that needs to be said is that black people need to take accountability for their alienating social practices toward children who seem different or do things perceived as 'not black.' they need to learn that you can be black and be anything. additionally, anti-black black people need to take accountability for the trauma they’ve faced so they don’t become hateful and harmful to the black identity.

@Riki-G I promise my comments aggression wasn't meant for you. This was a great video. Abed just gets me a little heated.

You're sayin' a lot but not really sayin' anything...
New sub❤❤❤
I will forever call Lando Carl-son now
Is it a foreshadow that at 1:57 you introduce his brother while mentioning they'd become long-time collaborators, but then follow up with mentioning his sister and having no mention of anything about her what-so-ever? I wonder... I'll keep watching and find out if it is.
Not Lando Carlson 😂
I have never seen anything Star Wars!! lol my apologies
That Issa Rae video would be cool
Issa Rae would be everything
I saw Swarm as less about fandom as it was about Black, nuerodivergent rage
He still goated
There are terrible men, there are terrible women. All shapes, all colors. How you relate to a character *will* influence favorability. Gotta develop that androgynous mind. Without *some* freedom from these, I don't know, ever-narrowing feudal states of identity, ALL our heads will be driven so far up our...
Ooh love your nails tho!!
literally every song on his album “ camp “ he is obsessed with asian girls
Asian girls everywhere...UCLA
I remember that bro…. Skit. That’s how I got exposed to him ….. yikes wording
I was a distant associate of Donald before he got hired to community. I even bugged him for song file he gave it to me and then dissed me on one of his early EPs. He's definitely not a misogynist. He used to do shoes at UCB with Derrick .
Definitely not? How is he?
Any way to prove he's not?
he's weird but he is living his life as he wants to with his dream wasian wife so oh well
Hasn't really been problematic since Because the Internet, at least where lyrics are concerned
