How My Velcro Whippet Learned To Spend Time Without Me

  • I used to work remotely (from home) for almost 4 years and everyone loved it, especially my 7 (8 at the time) whippets. I could easily balance between all my tasks and attending to the whippets and Erys, our youngest, was the happiest, being a severe case of a velcro dog. However, life brings changes and I now have to work from an office for a while and I wanted to share with you how Erys accepted and adjusted to this chance.

    Erys has socialized you very well, Addie! There's no such pain in the entire world as a change in routines and I admire the way you've solved the situation. Thank you for the video! ❤❤❤

      Erys is very fortunate to have a big pack and a family of humans who are dedicated to Whippets 100%.
      She is very lucky.

    When I had to start going to the office, we worked on the association of bicycle = I come back. Not easy at the beginning, but now they don't even bat a lash when I grab my bike.
    Likewise, not a word, nothing that can trigger an "i am leaving" message.
    Now i even managed to associate the market stroller with the " i will be back" message and is just fine. Congratulations on your new job.

    I looked after my friend's Whippet [sister to my Whippet] for 9 hours...and she Shrieked and wailed despite knowing me and {obviously!} her sister.
    She was genuinely distressed... although after about 7 hours she calmed down a bit.
    Separation anxiety when away from their owner can be a real problem with some Whippets.

      @@ShowPaws It really was! Her wailing and frantic sniffing under the door - I'd try to get her to settle by stroking her and her owner had left her nice treats - Although after seven hours she was relaxed enough to stay on the sofa while I made a coffee or went to the loo..rather than following me frantically.
      She also barked whenever my neighbours made a noise {she's a good guard dog!}

    Thank you Adi for this video. I feel my Theo is the same case, he is used to being with me every day all day as I work from home, tailing me everywhere, and does not really care about other members of the household. As I leave home occasionally, he is on alert and doesn't rest, so when I come home, he finally lays down from exhaustion, the same as Erys..

      They burn off so much energy getting distressed - My friend's Whippet who I looked after for the day was on high alert for any noise that might be her owner returning . My Whippet tried to comfort her {they are sisters} but it wasn't enough-she wanted her human!

      yes, you feel bad when you know that the dog is not feeling well. It is so important that the dog learns to stay alone as a puppy. At some point it will become a habit, but the sooner the dog learns it, the better. For everyone involved.

      @@sonjaf.8049 This is true... It's interesting that Adi's Whippet STILL got a form of separation anxiety despite having a pack of Whippets there and also her Mum!
      My friend has a pack of Whippets and one of hers doesn't much like being left - even if left with her husband there {and they all love him}

      It's extra hard to leave the house when you know they are so attached to you, but there are times when it has to be done. Like Oakleaf mentioned, in Erys' case with me and in Skylar's case with my mom, being in a larger pack doesn't necessarily eliminate the risk of separation anxiety. But with Erys it helps as eventually she goes to play or cuddle with the others when I am not home.

    Could you maybe do a video about training a single whippet/iggy to stay home alone? Everyone I see has multiple dogs and she is fine as long as other dogs are around, but being alone (since we only have one dog at this point) is really hard. Best regards and love your videos! ❤

    QQ if that's ok - I have a 5m old female whippet, and she throws out undigested food almost every day. Is that normal for a whippet puppy and do you have any advice on how to solve this problem? (She sleeps with us so you can imagine that we have to wash our bed, sofa .. etc almost every day and that's very tiring)

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! I would recommend you seek advice from a veterinarian. Perhaps she overeats or plays a lot right after her meals, or another cause. But it is abnormal for her to throw up undigested food almost every day. Good luck and I hope it's nothing serious 💗

    I had a whippet for 15 years. I was home most of the time but could Never train him to be calm with being alone. This video wasn't helpful since when this whippet was " alone " she was with one human and 6 other whippets !

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sorry you didn't find the video helpful in your case, however neither in the title, nor in the video itself have I mentioned she has adjusted to being alone, or that we'll be teaching her to be on her own. I even said she is more fortunate than other whippets who don't have buddies, as she is surrounded by 6 whippets (7 for the majority of her life) and 4* other people and even so, the transition was difficult for her. I intended to highlight separation anxiety in whippets is not to be underestimated and the video is also a part of Erys' life and adventures, which I've been documenting since she was 3.5 months old 😊
