- The 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter ($40,770 starting in the US, $54,200 starting in Canada ) is fully new and now comes with a hybrid option to complement its 2.4 L 4-cylinder turbo engine. In this Trailhunter trim, it comes with 326 hybrid horsepower and 465 lb ft of torque, along with all sorts of overlanding focused upgrades. This includes Old Man Emu shocks, a stabilizer disconnect mechanism, and 33 inch all terrain Toyo tires. Thomas is currently trying to decide between the new 4Runner and the Landcruiser to replace his daily driver. How does the 4Runner compare? And why is he leaning towards the Toyotas over their competitors? Thomas and James can’t wait to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!

I can’t believe that intro came with a free, thorough and well researched review as a bonus
He has to give something back to them.............for the jump 🤡
@@alexp5590 they should give them a free land cruiser for that jump, it was great marketing
These comments are absolute cringe. I'm not surprised though considering the jeet making them.
@@deeem2628 I hope you're purposely being ironic or do you actually lack complete self-awareness?
Yeah haha, they are stepping it up. I'm loving the channel more and more!!
Thomas trauma bonded with the Land Cruiser after he jumped it on the dunes and landed not so gently so I’m guessing that’s the one he bought.
Honestly you are probably right lol.
but should've bought a CPO F150 Raptor to land gently every time
I’m almost certain Thomas gets the Land Cruiser. After all he admits to caring about the look and vibe etc in this video, so that decision has already been made
Trauma bonding theory is legit
Or, it could be the mommy issues that win the day, leading to the more badass 4Runner.
"You bastard" as the last phrase of the video?
Cinema. Absolute cinema.
Sounds like something a certain person that starts with J and ends with Eremy Clarkson would say
@@jeremyfong5684 Starts with a J? Who could that possibly be referring too 🤔
These guys are by far the best TH-camrs that I know of. I've no interest in a Forerunner but I watched the video anyway. And I want Thomas to buy the Land Cruiser. He thinks it looks better. I think it looks better. Probably will get one in that sand color.
I watched this on a 120" screen....I might tend to agree!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just came home, Toronto, from Ottawa in a snow storm in my 21 year old 4runner. I parked on the street -because one must shovel before parking on the driveway (we are not savages). Turned back and looked at my old warrior after 6 hours on the road with snow, ice, slash and dirt. It looked like a war horse, steaming after the battle in the cold. I said, I love this truck! Got in, made a cup of nice earl grey -hot. Opened up the TH-cam just to wind down a little and I saw that the two youngsters, I enjoy watching a lot, made a video about the new 4runner. Life was good today!
Thats the only way to drink Earl Grey

Wouldn't the Bronco actually fit the bill? I don't know if he needs the third row. But it's more road friendly than Wrangler. Toyota has not been the shining star of reliability lately anyway.

$67,000 for a 4 cylinder 4Runner is fucking ridiculous.
Idc how good it is, this comment should be pinned everywhere.
And the TRD pro is even more. The previous gen TRD Pro was about twenty thousand dollars cheaper!
Toyota's have become some of the worst value vehicles you can buy

@@chewysea2404 that's a little strong. Cammisa is the closest
Sorry Thomas, I'm a huge TH & Toyota fan, but the GX550 is the move here. Reliable twin-turbo 6-cylinder & non-explosive transmission with more gears, 3rd row regardless of trim, refinement, comfort, road manners. It's the better version of the LC in every way except maybe the styling isn't as classic. But if resale values of my V6 Tacoma were anything to go by vs the 4-bangers, you're gonna wish you got the 6.
I don't understand how this is even a question at this point. The new 4runner and new Land Cruiser are both just less desirable versions of the Lexus GX. It baffles me why anybody in their right mind would choose either of these over a GX. It also baffles me why Toyota did this in the first place. I guess to drive people towards Lexus, but man, their reputation is going with their customers.
That intro was fire 🔥. Throttle house showing us they are the best in the business. Gotta say the new 4 Runner is actually awesome. Over here in Australia, we don't get the 4Runner, but we still have the proper old school Landcruiser, albeit with no V8 turbo diesel.
Idk bro looks weird
I like too. Has that modern classic look
Looks like the old one
But won't be reliable. And it's way overpriced
bro, i wasn't expecting to see you here. Not long ago i saw you in droodles comments and now your even here
Lol I love when you say "Fancy new interior" and you show a screen with the biggest bezels I've ever seen!
Yeah man, it looks horrible. Or maybe that was the point, IDK.
@karacha maybe their editor was being cheeky
@@MrMegatron85 Probably. Base Toyota interiors tend to be basic and some cases even ugly, but it does get better in the upper trims. So, I guess they used the worst one as a joke. This particular trim is expensive, but it does look much better inside. The materials are still so-so (especially the seats), but the design language is nice and modern.
Luckily it's not like that on all trims. The bezels are only present on lower trims, once you hit the TRD Sport Premium you get the bigger screen.
You haven’t seen Benz EQ interior then
Hey Thomas, I think in this case you should really listen to Jason Cammisa and get the Lexus GX. Looks better, more practical and doesn't suffer from the underwhelming powertrain. The higher resale value will make up for the upfront costs.
Cheers, you guys are top notch and I love your videos!!
I think he should get the european one with the Diesel 4 Banger. Thats real LC territory
I am pretty sure Thomas already bought it, and my guess is its land cruiser.
Yup! Went through the buying process and landed on a OT+ GX550 as the best option. So nice to see many reviewers sharing the same thoughts as I did. Put 4,500 miles on it and it's been great!
Doesn’t look better though.
I came here to agree with this sentiment. The Lexus GX is by far the best of the 3
A 4Runner that hasn’t earned its reputation yet, with a 4 cylinder engine for over $60k is ludicrous.
Given how that engine sounds I don't think they're long for this world. It already sounds like it's eating itself. Dear god. I suspect they're going to start failing before 100k miles. How did Toyota of all brands decide that rattle-can of an engine was the right choice? Bonkers.
@@TheJohn8765Agreed and Toyota doesn't pat themselves on the back enough for smooth powertrains. My father in law had a Toyota Sienna with the 3.3 V6 and it had almost 200,000 miles and i swear you wouldn't know the engine was running when you were standing right next to it
@@TheJohn8765I mean, Prius consistently goes 300,000+ miles. They’re the default taxi now. Many of those have 500,000 miles.
But does that translate to this big SUV? We’ll see. Even if it does though, I just don’t like the power delivery. It is really working to move you. Fine in a Corolla, but this will go over like a 4 cylinder AMG
@@TheJohn8765 The Tundra has had the iforce max for a few years now and its had major issues, putting a 4 cylinder in a vehicle that large in heavy is just too much strain on the motor
The base model is $40k. I'm hoping he bought a base model with 4WD and is going to review that.
I had a 2006 4Runner Limited with V8 full-time 4 wheel drive. I needed 4 wheel drive for snow in the southern CA mountains. I never took the car off-road, but always felt confident I could go anywhere I needed to go including the mall. I can’t even imagine having a 4 cylinder motor on such a large car.
Car base SUVs are superior in everyday driving and typically get better gas mileage. Can’t wait to see what Thomas selects.
Thomas, just get a 2023 GX460. That is the right choice for you.
200 series lx is the move.
This is technically the right answer, but I’m willing to bet he doesn’t like the looks. The front end is just too goofy. This comes from someone that just sold his 2023 GX460, not for that reason mind you, but I never did like the looks of it from the front.
The Lexus is too luxury looking for him he wants a more "badass" truck not a mall crawler
@@MouwcatOFCand what do you think he's gunna do with the 4runner. Crawl the malls 🙄
@ a badass 4-cylinder huh?
I just picked up a 5th gen because I didn’t want the new engine, but super excited where the aftermarket community takes these. It looks huge, but some shops already put 35s on and it looked great.
Even though 99% of people don't need 35s and will end up whining about their gas mileage after installing them
can't imagine 35's with that 4cyl lol. sounds like a recipe for failed transmissions without regears.
Wow the marketing folks are great at getting posers to part with money. Every rube that buys a Truck or SUV immediately wants to pay more to lift it and put giant tires on them just to transport their laptop to work.
@@kyrujamesUmm..... You did catch the 8-speed transmission part didn't you?
Them tires won't affect that transmission not even a lil let alone pushing it to the brink of failure as you claim 🙄
@@chelseapeters7187if it’s anything like the Tacoma, it’ll be garbage
The 2026 Passport is going to be a must watch review after this
i was just coming here to say that'd be one for Thomas to wait for considering the transmission issues Toyota has been having with their newer models.
This is the way
I own a 2023 Pilot Trailsport and I hope they put the same front end (2026 Passport) on the Pilot, I'll trade it in so fast!
Passport and a $5000 beater SUV makes the best sense. Who sould seriously take a $60k car offroading? Everyone knows the first 3 years of cars are princesses until it's mostly paid off.
It'll be interesting to see the delta between the two, especially in terms of off-roading. 4runner will be superior in that regard, but let's see if Honda has improved in any way.
I have a 2003 4x4 V8 4Runner with only 240k miles. I’m still good on my 4Runner purchase, thanks Toyota!
I had an 04 with 275k miles , traded it in for a brand new 17 tacoma sport 6 speed manual. fun to drive, but I miss my 4 runner dearly. hang on to yours.
3:49 Putting Doug in 1.5x speed was perfect 😂😂
And it was still too slow! Dude is insufferable.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Doug's hatred of the new LC is purely because he doesn't understand that it's actually the new Prado. The new LC for NA and EU are the same thing, but the previous LC in EU was called the Prado everywhere else.
If he compared the new LC with the old Prado, he'd realise it's pretty decent (engine aside). But he doesn't seem to accept that it's not the same thing as the last NA market LC
We all know that's how we all watch his videos
Doug contradicted himself in his new 2025 4Runner review video, praising the identical engine as powerful and adequate.
In the LC video, he’s says the opposite
11:04 the tone Thomas used very fierce and authoritative and James look on his face. Priceless. Best moment ever. Also the intro I had no idea Thomas had that low dark tone in his voice. It was incredible. Harrison thank them for us all. Ps give them bear hugs. From me.
I don't know how you guys do it but you one up yourself every video. One of the best intros I've ever seen!
That powertrain for that price is insane. That's a $40k car max.
It’s a shame, as I really like the looks of the new 4Runner, but that Toyota 4-banger is dreadful. This rig so needs a V-6, preferably boosted. It’s shocking how modern Toyota 4-cylinders are so unrefined compared to so many other brands.
I appreciate the acknowledgment that despite being objective and having all the information we need, we still buy what we want. You can compare trims, make spreadsheets, drive 20 different vehicles, at the end of the day, you’re drawn to something for one reason or another and logic generally goes out the window.
"It's a WHIP." Love it
I lost it. How dare James insult Indiana's whip. 🤣
The look on James face had me lol.
Primarily for driving around the city/country with occasional trips through trails to go camping? CX-90.
If he considers 2 row SUV, CX-70 is 5k cheaper, has better looking front part, better fuel economy, better power to weight ratio, more space on second row. For the trails, Mazda has almost nothing to offer and it was not meant to be used that way.
I have taken my cx30 down trails and it did great
You must mean dirt roads 😂 my sisters got a CX30 AWD and that thing would not touch anything considered a trail lol. Now my old land Rover eats trails for breakfast but alas it's built for that. @@schizophrenicgaming365
@@schizophrenicgaming365 90% of trails people do with the SUV I can do in Mazda 3. Honestly, SUVs are the most useless vehicles. Something like A6 allroad does better job at off road than 99% SUVs, has more leg room, bigger trunk and handles way better that 99% of SUVs. Now when it comes to real off road cars, as TH mentioned, only 5-10% of buyers really use off road capabilities. I did not see any dirty Jeep Wrangler or Tacoma. I live in the north, I have been driving front|rear wheel drive sedans my entire life and never stuck anywhere. I regularly go to ski in the mountains and had 0 issues even there. Nice winter tires is all you need.
Mazda is garbage
I respect Toyota. I used to love the Land Cruiser. I dislike the powertrain in these vehicles, and would therefore never buy one. On the other hand, Throttle House makes such entertaining content that I watch anyways, even though I don't like the vehicle. THAT is why you guys are the best thing since Top Gear. Kudos!
Congrats Thomas on your new CyberTruck! We knew it all along.
I totally see that comment coming lol
James' face after Thomas says "it's a whip!" PRICELESS!! Keep it coming fellas!
Been here since 20k subs, the intros just keep getting better.
Land Cruiser it is. The brain, not the heart technically, knows what it wants.
This. You need to like the looks of your new vehicle.
15:29 Absolute Cinema 🥲🥹🙏🥶
I own both a Gen5 4Runner TRD Off-road and an INEOS Grenadier, and Thomas is absolutely right that the Gen 5 looks better than the new 4Runner. He's also completely right about how 4Runners are "get in and go types of trucks". Everything is simple and everything works. Which I cannot say the same thing about our Grenadier. The Grenadier has tons of weird electrical quirks and it's not nearly as easy to get in and just drive. But the Grenadier is fun as hell, the engine and transmission are amazing, and you feel like a bad ass driving it in town, or out in the wilderness. I love both, and don't plan to sell either anytime soon.
Grenadiers are awesome. Best purely mechanical off-roader.
grenadiers look bad-ass
I love that TH-cam served me a Defender commercial in the middle of this video where you slagged off a Defender 110
yall still make the best content. well done
The 5th gen still checks all the boxes for me. It comes with carplay and everything else is still archaic which is nice. Parts are plentiful and pretty cheap and it still has the old school toyota reliability that's still unproven in the new models. I drove an FJ Cruiser for 11 years and had zero problems with it, the 5th gen is basically just a 4 door version of that. The only thing it could use is a six speed transmission instead of five but I think I'd prefer a five speed over eight. Also I still think it's one of the best looking SUVs with the TRD trim.
This Channel is transforming into the Real Top Gear we all loved
Man, you guys sure know how to do an intro!! That said, I wasn't sure how to feel about this new 4R at first, but the more of it that I see, the more I like it. I recently filmed a '24 Tacoma myself, which was a great taste of what this new Toyota drivetrain delivers, and it surprised impressed me!
It's wild that these Throttle House videos are available for free. The amount of production value in them is truly incredible. It's as good if not better than the Top Gear in my view.
Can’t wait for the 2 cylinder model in a few years
Mr Thom Kha, if you want either of these cars, you should really look at the Lexus. Its just better across the board for what you actually want. Family friendly comfort, with proper noise insulation, a much better interior, and a proper engine. Plus depreciation is just a touch better for when you inevitably get bored again and want to sell.
Trust.
once again,as time goes by this proves that the 4th gen 4.7 engines were the BEST why they got rid of it? no idea

All these vids about the new 2025 cruisers, runners, and tacos rolling out only have me feeling one thing: gratitude that I kept my 3rd gen taco with its V6 and an absurd amount of aftermarket upgrades that are miles better than anything Toyota provides from the factory.
Exterior looks better than the LC, especially from the rear. Rather still pay the extra 20-30k for a GX over either though sheesh.
I would have assumed the GX with the TT V6 would have been 'the move' for this generation

I really enjoyed this one! I think its because of Thomas' POV of wanting to buy it... thats pretty much me with all of your videos 😂😂

I'd watch these guys review a jar of peanut butter. They are great. Personally, I'd have kept the M2 told the family to cope. 😂
I paid $15,500 for a stock 2007 fj cruiser two years ago. Since then I’ve rebuilt the entire suspension and added a 3” lift, new method bead grip wheels, 33” Mickey Thompson A/Ts and a gobi roof rack. All that cost me ~$6,000. So all in all, I’m less than $23k in on my build. There is no way I’d be willing to pay $50-70k on anything I’m taking offroad. This is a cool platform but there’s no way I’d buy one, even if my FJ blew up tomorrow
I said it a 1000 times this is the best car review channel on TH-cam 😂
I can't even imagine spending that kind of money to LARP. Previous gen 4runners have taken over our suburban neighborhood. Every single one has a 2" lift, black fake beadlock wheels, 33" TA2, a roof basket, and LED lightbars. They take grade school aged kids to the school 8 blocks away, and sit and idle at the Dutch Bros coffee drive-thru.
How do you know these people don't go off-road? Are you monitoring the trails? My LC absolutely takes the kids to school, then takes them to the mountains on the weekends.
Most of these will be grocery getters
@@jdrein9511 Because we have data. lol A estimated 10-25% of 4x4 owners go off-road.
they should of made the 4.0 an option for people who want reliability
Now that's the way to start a video! Thomas, please buy the Lexus GX with the V6, or a few years old GX460 with the V8. It may use more fuel, but it will last a very, very long time! The LC/Lexus has all-time AWD, so it's always ready, always taking what ever the road or trail can dish out, not like the 4-Runner. This may also be better and safer for the wife and kids, if she was to drive it.

I bet Thomas will buy a Land Cruiser, but an older one imported from Japan. Mark my words!
Top tier opening on this one chaps - outstanding. Not sure I could live with that agricultural asthmatic diesel in my premium SUV 4x4 vehicle honestly, but hope you’re happy with whatever you end up with.
Honestly, if it was a diesel, then it would have unironically made everything make sense.
However, it's not and it basically requires 93 💀. How Toyota failed terribly in making it smooth, comfortable, and sound good is wild to me and many others including you
I'm just gonna put in my vote for the Honda Pilot Trailsport here. V6, Offroad Tires, Incredible AWD system (that is superior in every way to the systems in these vehicles on the road, where you will spend 99% of your time), better driving dynamics than any of these, cheaper and more reliable (no hybrid or turbo's to worry about).
That’s right you bastard 😂😂 now I gotta wait whole week to find out which one you bought lol

The one thing that makes me like the looks of this over the LC is the 2nd gen rear quarter windows. I'm obsessed.
Also, every time a new 4runner comes out people freak out about the engine. Look at forums from when the 4th and 5th gens came out, everyone said they'd never last as long as the previous gens.

To be fair, the Prius has come a long way lol. There is a point where vehicles shouldn't need to be faster and faster with each new generation and we will eventually reach that point. They should just keep making them more efficient. Over 300hp and a lot of torque is plenty for what you need a truck/SUV to do. These trucks are quick and they will soar on the freeway and easily get you into trouble compared to the old Toyotas.

Why not put twin turbo V6 in it
Because the Lexus GX could only have that
From what I’ve heard about the new V6 and its “grenading” issues in the Lexus, the 4 cylinder may be the better choice of the two. Time will tell, of course.
@@FaddaJoeit’s a damn shame, the Lexus GX was my favorite of the bunch. Such a wonderful vehicle.
Because it doesn't meet regulations for the weight and class of vehicle... so Toyota would have to pay more tax on the production of each model. This is the same struggle all manufacturers are dealing with at the moment. A lot of cars don't come with the engine you think they should come with because of emissions laws.
Because the v6 goes in the 300 series LANDCRUSER, not the Prado.
Yeah! Jason Cammisa cameo!
I’m deciding between all 3 as well but , 1. Lexus 2. 4Runner 3. Land Cruiser
As usual, the intro is epic.😂
Toyota has ruined decades of history and legendary reliability of both the Four Runner and the Land Cruiser in one fail swoop. Over priced junk both of them. They look badass tho. I’ll give em that. I don’t care if it makes more power and gets better fuel economy. I’d rather have the bulletproof reliability of the old V6. 70k$ is ridiculous!! The qualities worse and the price is higher. Great job Toyota on destroying your brand. Yaayyy go you!!🤣🤣 These next few emojis are for all of you who come to comment about how wrong I am and how much better this is.👉🏻🤡🤡
Nah, you are absolutely correct on all points.
Yup, agreed
