Same! I must preface this by saying this is purely my opinion. I’ve had friends shoot fine with sights sans any time behind open sights. Open sights are like recurve bow shooting for me. Without the basic understanding thereof; you’re going to have a slightly harder time understanding the proper genius that is range estimation and adjustment. The math that goes into both is fairly easy to do, for both Minutes of Angle and Milliradians; but with some iron sight shooting under your belt, it helps you visualize what the gun itself is doing when you sight in an external optic and makes the understanding of the math more integral to your shooting. Hope everyone reading this is having a FINE day! Good luck and happy ventures!
My father was a shooting instructor during WW11 and trained soldiers to shoot the Springfield rifle at 1000 yard targets with iron sights.. I remember in basic training in 1962 shooting at 500 yards with the M1 with iron sights.
I find that hard to believe. During WW2 the standards for the M1 rifles were 200-300 yards targets. For M1903 rifles, you had to hit targets at ranges of 300-500 yards. The military never had a 1000 yards target training, even for so-called "snipers."
World war 11 didnt even happen yet but if you mean ww2 then stop the cap because The idea of shooting a 1000 yards didn't even exist at the time not in war nor competition the 1000 yards idea came about quite recently actually with the invention of high power scopes and match grade bullets and sub MOA rifle barrels which none have existed back in the 1940s or 50s or 60s or 70s or even the 80s so again stop the cap
I've done this up to 800 yards. The double aperture sights have an orthoptic effect, and the size of the apertures is calculated to fit the bulls-eye at all ranges (constant MOA). When the sights are properly aligned, the target seems to leap into sharp focus. This is, IMHO, Superior to a scope, but of course it only works on the size (in MOA) of targets. All you have to do then is 'dope' the wind.... there are flags for that. The ammunition used was standard 7.62 Nato 147gr FMJ. I managed to put ten rounds within 10" with a single shot Parker Hale target rifle..... Interesting...
It's such a great thing whenever people get their kids shooting Young it's a great bonding experience and plus it's something that can be taught to them that may save their life one day
The art of open site shooting is long gone! I remember growing up with old cowboys who could shoot a running deer with one shot! Now everyone needs high dollar scopes.
Most challenging is shooting the .223 caliber US Service Rifle with its iron sights at 1000 yards. It requires Princess & The Pea feel for a consistent position and sight alignment. In addition, wind appraisal skill is essential just to place rounds in the 20 inch 10 ring. My best performance as I recall was a 374 and 6 out of 400. I think in one of those 2 matches I shot a 192. At any rate, it's much harder than iron sight match rifle division, where I earned an American High Power Rifleman distinction for shooting an average of 97%.

In the beginning. They stated that if you hold the center of the black ring on your iron sights you should hit. I’m curious to see if there’s zeroing is 1000 yards
to be the funny guy here. a rifle bullet depending on calible and such naturally can easily go 2-3000 meters, point the rifle and pull trigger, bullet will unless it hits anything fly unitl it drops, this is about 2-3000 meter and often more. (yes I know this is about iron sights and making aimed shots to actually hit things)
Just a couple of observations: iron sights rather than open sights, and analogy with a horizontal distance and that of a vertical (tower of Big Ben) is bizarre? Surely football pitches would be more appropriate (8 football pitches)?

I use to have a firearms licence. I meant more the accessibility of the shooting grounds. It'd be nice if there were one in every county. Even if the range wasn't very big
+FGYT Shooting How do you go about owning a firearm when you rent your property and aren't allowed to install a safe? Is it possible to own a rifle but have it stored at your club? I'm very interested in starting out but before committing I want to know the ins and outs of not being able to store firearms at your home, I wouldn't need them at home anyway it seems handy to me for it to be always at the club.
+Matt Jarrett If you want to shoot primarily at Bisley, plenty of the club houses provide armouries. I keep my rifles at the range in one of those armouries.
+Matt Jarrett Not sure how it works in the UK. In the US it's not actually even needed, but my dad still bought a gun safe. It's not 'installed'. It's literally a freestanding safe. Big bastard is solid steel and probably heavier than the rest of the house.
Props to the average British shooter. Though they don't have the right for Semi and machine guns, ad here in the states, they make up with being excellent shots.
Noticed there was a box of .308-winchester from a sponsor. Assuming that is one of the calibers used. Could a shooter use a semi-automatic, precision rifle? Or, would that be illegal in the UK? If legal what is the highest legal magazine capacity in the UK. Glad to see those MOA units utilized. At 1000 yards, one MOA is 10.47-inch. Stephen Giannikas Im guessing you were there last Saturday when my school managed to scrape a win by 3 points :D But still the fact that wellington college has gone 10 years without defeat in 10 bull is just incredible you guys are amazing!
Paul. At that distance there are four of those flags, about 25 ft high, in lines, between the shooter and the target, every 200 yards. on Sat 11th Aug my club were shooting in our annual "Catastrophe" match at 900, 1000 @ 1100 yards (same sights etc) . Because of the topography of Bisley, hills, tree lines, open flats etc the wind can, and usually is, a "Ba*****"! Many times you can look along the nearest line of flags, only to have one blowing from left to right, the next one hanging limp, the one after going right to left and the one nearest the target blowing towards you....You can alter those configurations around any which way you want, sometimes from hour to hour. No kidding! Its a beautiful range to shoot on, but is incredibly demanding sometimes. The wind coaches really have their work cut out, and even trying to hold a rifle steady, with the wind buffeting the barrels & thick foresights around makes it very hard work sometimes. But its always good to be there, whether its baking hot, freezing cold or pi***** with rain, its always better than being at work!
Jim The EDC Guy Its good fun. This shooting there in England lacks the most important aspect of the long range shooting fun. You absolute must use black powder, only. With the Holy Black, you get the delicious stench --- I mean smell -- of rotten eggs, with burning sulfur and feathers. And billowing gouts of smoke, lots smoke. There is no substitute for the real experience of the Old Timers.
I went to the offices asking how to become a member and got into an argument about the requisites to get a handgun license in Australia (my country) and England. I was not going to take any cheeck from them! In the end I thought it was wise not to return. Regards
It can be tough at first, Ive shot at Bisley in 2015 on the range they are showing, the hardest thing is the wind is normally going many different directions at different points of the range at the same time, so at say 600 its blowing east to west, but at 400 its west to east, its a lot of fun!
Ruben Garcia the only tip I can really give you is work your way up. Learn the basics in smallbore and work on your technique there. Then once you feel confident move up to 300/500/600 yards in fullbore and once you've mastered those ranges move on to 900/1000/1200 yards.
The principles of marksmanship (consistent sight alignment and smooth trigger control) are the same for irons or optics. With irons you place the dominate eye to position the front sight post or aperture in the center of the rear aperture and anchor the relationship of sights to eye with a good stock weld. This is easy to make perfect, since the eye naturally wants to center things. That's good, because sight misalignment produces angular error, which increases with distance.
I want a cannon car. No engine. It just shoots massive white clouds of smoke and toilet paper out the back propelling me forward into the sunset while inside I sit plastered to the front seat. Smiling, doubled up on earplugs :)
6:03 How the hell are you shooting with all of that shit hanging off of your barrel? Barrel harmonics are the reason we love our free floated barrels here in the States. Let that barrel move the way it wants to, and develop your load so that the projectile exits the muzzle consistently during the movement of the barrel This is massively interesting to see you Limeys shooting this way
The most accurate rifles of WW1 and WW2 (P14/M1917, Lee-Enfield and 1903 Springfield) had barrels that were intentionally pressure bedded to the stock. If they are free floated by someone without this knowlege, the accuracy goes to hell. Whenever you hear of someone free floating a Lee-Enfield, its usually accompanied by them bitching about the accuracy, then they inevitably go blaming the rifle for a worn out bore or something, when in actuality, the barrel was DESIGNED not to be free floating
Not for me. Who can work up the best round is all part of the battle. Having the same round levels the playing field. I like auto racing where all the cars are the same. This would be fun with a rainbow of a round like the 45-70.

There are 2 types of people who watched the video: 1) Who are realy interested in long range shooting. 2)Who saw the thumbnail. You asked why I watched?.... Both!
No. The government banned semi- auto fullbore rifles back in 97 I think it was, and fullbore handguns several years after that, both times because of "Nut Jobs" going on a killing spree, taking out a lot of people on both occasions. Thankfully, this seems to have worked as regards to "mass shootings" We can still own semi-auto .22 rimfire rifles & certain fullbore pistols, but these have to comply with some very strict rules, mainly regarding overall length. If anyone ever tells you we don't have firearms in this country, get them to watch this vid. Bisley, 150 yrs and still going strong!

With the Holy Black, you get the delicious stench --- I mean smell -- of rotten eggs, with burning sulfur and feathers. And billowing gouts of smoke, lots smoke. There is no substitute for the real experience of the Old Timers.
Been there, done that. Well... as a matter of fact I was kicked out of Bisley back in 1991. True fact! Regards
I was there in 92 shooting for the army cadet's. Why did you get kicked out?
I went to the offices asking how to become a member and got into an argument about the requisites to get a handgun license in Australia (my country) and England. I was not going to take any cheeck from them! In the end I thought it was wise not to return. Regards
Lazarus0357 lol. That's funny man.
Yes !
Never heard of shooting this far with "iron sites" amazing.
iron sights*
Aristophane Chay sits*
It can be tough at first, Ive shot at Bisley in 2015 on the range they are showing, the hardest thing is the wind is normally going many different directions at different points of the range at the same time, so at say 600 its blowing east to west, but at 400 its west to east, its a lot of fun!
Not really 'iron sights' in the groove and post style, usually a ghost ring style like the old Creedmore.
I still don't know how to shot 1000yrs w no scope? where is the how to? just few small tips?
What caliber do they shoot?
7.62
Thumbnail...what were they thinking
That thumbnail
00:05:22 Imagine holding an infant and letting a crowd of people carry you in a chair... with your infant. Must be a bong thing. Its horrifying.
That ittle cannon was super cute hehe..
I know my eyes aren't good enough to shoot 300yds without a scope.
Get some specific "shooting glasses".
Small ball?
I want a cannon car. No engine. It just shoots massive white clouds of smoke and toilet paper out the back propelling me forward into the sunset while inside I sit plastered to the front seat. Smiling, doubled up on earplugs :)
Wow, 1000 yards with ghost rings. Certainly better than me
its a lot of fun, if you ever get the chance try it!
Xiellion I do shoot ar irons out to 600 meters and that's pushing my limits. I would like to try a service rifle match though.
you should be able to hit with pulse
bring back the 303s
"How to shoot (a 2 FOOT TARGET) at 1000 yards without a scope". I still need a scope when I shoot at a 10" target at 1k.
3.7 feet.
The U.K. Really knows how to make shooting inaccessible/over-complicated.
its really not difficult, the cadet programs do it and their children
Yep, rules eh - who needs them?
do the shooters really use factory ammo?
Yes - so everyone shoots the same. GGG has just won the contract from RUAG
that is suprising for such an accuracy demanding sport, do they all use the same rifle model/barrel to?
Not every where
Australia, New Zealand, New Zealand and many more reload because it is more accurate to fire form your own load
+Yeah Bee No, not really, there are a few main manufacturers that you'll come across, for both the action and the barrel.
+Fieldsports Channel I call bullshit
The Bisley is the match that caused the formation of the NRA
ah yes, ill really need this tutorial for school tomorrow
you should put 360 no scope on the title so you get million views.
Reminds me Martin Riggs

How the hell are you shooting with all of that shit hanging off of your barrel?
Barrel harmonics are the reason we love our free floated barrels here in the States. Let that barrel move the way it wants to, and develop your load so that the projectile exits the muzzle consistently during the movement of the barrel
This is massively interesting to see you Limeys shooting this way
The most accurate rifles of WW1 and WW2 (P14/M1917, Lee-Enfield and 1903 Springfield) had barrels that were intentionally pressure bedded to the stock.
The barrel only has a foresight attached to it.
Can`t one reload in Britain?
+Rupert McNaught Davis Yes - but for this competition they use a single standard ammunition. / Charlie
Thanks Charlie, strength to your reporting arm, from South Africa.
Not for me. Who can work up the best round is all part of the battle. Having the same round levels the playing field. I like auto racing where all the cars are the same. This would be fun with a rainbow of a round like the 45-70.
I understand it's 7.62 155gr 'Match' ammunition by GGG of Lithuania - but more than that, I don't know - sorry. / Charlie
I only came here because I thought there would be advice, or some sort of coaching. Should have looked who posted it

6.11 thats how i shoot from Portugal with no scope
Surprised to see uncased firearms behind the firing line, also the poor muzzle control.
?
Agreed heads would roll of you saw that at a match here in the states
All us Corona cabin bound frustrated guys saw that cover and couldn’t click on it fast enough lol!
Started young at "14". Over here, we're handed an AR15 on our first birthday and expected to reassemble it blindfolded while singing God Bless America.
PepperoniGaming lol y'all white folks crazy
Been shooting since i was 3!
PepperoniGaming air rifles at 5 and 22 at 7 and my first gun at 10.
Ah yes, but how many of you shoot at 1000 + yds, without a scope and actually hit anything?
@@ericwilliams2317 just about nobody shoots 1000 yards without a scope, let alone 500 yards without one.
wow you can't even see the target
6:11 is the closest you can get
i want to learn how to shot.mostly w/a scoop
You can go to most gun ranges and rent a gun and hire an instructor .
ça c'est des véritables tireurs :) tout est très facile avec une lunette...
Should have said it's relatively inexpensive, at first.
Did he really just drop that scope at the beginning of the video?
Yup. It was a prototype from a manufacturer that didn't go into production. No loss. / Charlie
Mom used to say piffle...joy to hear the word again
There are 2 types of people who watched the video:
1) Who are realy interested in long range shooting.
2)Who saw the thumbnail.
You asked why I watched?....
Both!
It's a shooting video?
I was interested in doing this until I hearf cardio was needed. :(
Heard*
That's where the skill comes in. You can blaze away - and hit nothing. Or, you can train your body over time to be "GOOD"
Simo Hayha wins.
I can't believe he tossed that scope as if it weren't worth hundreds of dollars
I think someone was there ready to catch it, don't you?
I thought they banned all guns from England. Glad it's not true. The wife and I love shooting it's our hobby.
No. The government banned semi- auto fullbore rifles back in 97 I think it was, and fullbore handguns several years after that, both times because of "Nut Jobs" going on a killing spree, taking out a lot of people on both occasions. Thankfully, this seems to have worked as regards to "mass shootings"
We can still own semi-auto .22 rimfire rifles & certain fullbore pistols, but these have to comply with some very strict rules, mainly regarding overall length.
If anyone ever tells you we don't have firearms in this country, get them to watch this vid.
Bisley, 150 yrs and still going strong!
I came from the thumbnail
