      Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France, and Norway, plus Brazil has a "Zone of Interest."
      Then of course there's the dozens of former whaling stations and current research stations from those countries and a bunch more.

      Please delete this comment! The emus don't care who says it: every time someone reveals the truth of my country they feed one of our children to roaming bands of hungry koalas. The US, UN, Google. They have spies everywhere. Have you ever noticed how skinny and emu like Megan Markle's legs are? Who do you think assists the North Koreans in their nuclear program?
      Delete this now! But if you want to help my people achieve freedom then you can get the word out to trusted friends. And watch out, they may be onto you. If you are confronted by an emu in a dark alley make grunting noises and distract them by throwing a small handful of insects, then make a hasty retreat. I have to go now, it is almost my shift to build nests in the desert. Pray for me!

      We (Polynesians) don't grow up "knowing only these small islands surrounded by water". We do learn about other countries/continents through our education system, technology, family that live overseas and travel. My experiences when I travel overseas is that those from bigger countries know very little about Oceania.

    I'm happy to see the ancient civilization of Pohnpei (led by the Saudeleur dynasty on Nan Madol) wasn't overlooked, but they weren't the only civilization in Micronesia at the time. The people of Kosrae had their own civilization centered on the ancient city of Leluh.

    Questions because I'm too lazy to look them up: are Polynesian cultures and languages still well-preserved today, or have they been largely eradicated due to Western colonialism? And are post-colonial Oceanian countries drawn around national/ethnic lines, or are they like African/Middle-Eastern countries where the borders do not correspond to ethnic groups?

    • @MrLorem64

      The Dragon Historian I can't speak for every nation but I think, other than Australia, most Oceanic nation's have preserved the pre-european cultures. especially in Nz, and I do think it's more of a mix on where nation limes are drawn. Like Nz. the main 3 islands were inhabited by the Maori before Europeans, but I don't think Niue and the cook Islands were (though they have large levels of autonomy) can't be sure about other nations but I feel like it may be similar.

      The Maori culture in New Zealand (Aotearoa) is pretty well-preserved in my opinion, all kiwis know some of the language and some words we use in everyday speech with English like tu meke (awesome/too much), whanau (family), kia ora (hello), kai (food) etc. and most schools have a Maori language class and kapa haka (traditional dance) (even non-Maori join in), many places in NZ still has many Maori place names, as well as some Maori television channels, and everyone loves the haka haha :) We're pretty lucky compared to other indigenous people and other parts of the world

      Well yesish. Some island nations are still largely Polynesian. In southeast Asia, Polynesians represent much of the population of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philiphines. But these cultures were mish mashed with Indian cultures and Islam. Hawaii and New Zealand have semi assimilated cultures. Madagascar has a ethnic blend with the Africans. Polynesians were pretty much semi assimilated 95% of the time unless they ocupy the odd island or Fiji.

      50 may be a bit of an exaggeration, but lots of countries in Africa for example only got their independence in the 60s and 70s. Same applies to central Asia, and an estimate of "about half" wouldn't be that ridiculous. It just sounds out of the ordinary because a lot of the countries people talk about in day to day life are much older and people forget how many countries there are in the Pacific, Africa or Caribbean.

    • @Ray-wy4kq
      @Ray-wy4kq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I meant continuously independent countries. So the Balkans would be less than 50 years old, as too the Baltic states, almost all of Africa, the Caribbean, Pacific Islands, Kosovo, former USSR. Maybe I should have said 70 years--I forget it's not the naughties anymore.

    • @LeagueUnionSevens
      @LeagueUnionSevens 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      New Zealand wasn't a unified state, but for several hundred years the country was broken up into various iwi lands, each one containing a variety of settlements (hapu) united under a rangatira (chief/warlord). In this sense pre-European NZ looked very similar to the Sengoku period of Japan, with wars between neighbouring clans and gains/losses of land being a common occurance.
      I'd love for a page like Tigerstar to document NZ from 1200-present, however the difficulty would obviously be lack of information. Due to the Maori not using a written language, there'd be all kinds of gaps in knowledge with regards to which iwi occupied which land at which time, and you wouldn't be able to do it without a heck of a lot of research. And of course with no authority of information you'd be likely to get conflicting stories depending on which iwi you asked.

    • @ECloudDog

      That was never colonized, simply explored. New Holland was just the oldest European name for the continent of Australia (excluding Tasmania).
      As to answer your next question, that's a good question, I had to look it up myself. To summarize, Singapore had just fallen to the Japanese, and for some reason from then Australia pursued a foreign policy independent to the United Kingdom.

    I can kind of understand why you didn't show the tribal groups in Australia, New Zealand or New Guinea. You can't really have called them state entities, and there's the fact that there would have been no solid borders for you to draw; their conceptions of territory would have been far more fluid and changeable than the rigid permanence of modern state boundaries.

      After WW 2, the conquered territory was given to others as a "trust" with limitations by the UN, instead of a protectorate with no limits like after WW1.

    Can the Tonga empire really be called an empire?

    • @AholeAtheist
      @AholeAtheist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It is since it encompassed more than just Tonga, it included other islands that had their own people and cultures, like Samoa and Fiji.. For example Fiji is an overlap area of Melanesia and Polynesia, and as such the people are part Melanesian. Whereas Samoans and Tongans are mainly Polynesian.

    • @banjiu10
      @banjiu10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why not. Byzantine Empire in 1453 only has the city of Constantinople (about 14 km2), which has far less land area than Tonga (748km2 today), though Byzantine may have more people.

    • @g-rexsaurus794
      @g-rexsaurus794 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that´s not a valid reason, Monaco could call itself an empire because it has a bunch of people from everywhere.
      Almost EVERY COUNTRY in the world is like that.

    • @g-rexsaurus794
      @g-rexsaurus794 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Byzantine Empire was called so because it was bigger before, but Tonga is frankly historically pathetic in comparison.

    • @banjiu10
      @banjiu10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no clear definition of empire. So I guess if any country would love to, they can call themselves empires. Also these empires are named by modern historians. I don't know what Tonga called themselves, maybe just kingdom. They had 4 dynasties. There are small countries called empires, like the Trebizond Empire. Aztec is also called empire though strictly speaking they are not.

    it looks like polynesia was mostly dominated by british and french and then americans slowly inched in then british subordinated control to australia and new zealand, then for micronesia, it was mostly part of the spanish east indies, then sold off to the germans, then the japanese took it, then the americans took it, then melanesia was mostly also british and french, but papua was divided with dutch, german, and british/australian, then british and dutch later prevailed so australia and indonesia would get it, then australia let papua new guinea get its own country

    • @xXxSkyViperxXx
      @xXxSkyViperxXx 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Michael-io6db they didnt join in. the spanish just gave it away to the german empire after they lost the philippines to the americans because the spanish used to subordinate administration over micronesia from the philippines and to the spanish, after the philippines was lost, micronesia, palau, northern marianas, guam were hard to get to and not worth it anymore, so they gave it away to the germans who were diplomatically closer and looking for more land to grow their empire and didnt care what kind of land and it was close to german new guinea anyways. if the americans hadnt gotten the philippines, the british and germans were also interested in getting in on the philippines
