Hi Steph! My husband and I enjoy your videos and particularly like how you take the time to explain your process and encourage us,your viewers, to take charge of our gardens and do what will make us happy.
I love your videos so much.❤ They are so well done and have much useful information. In my opinion, you are definitely one of the top garden youtubers. Keep making videos like this! 😊
George is really stepping up his game. It’s great to watch him blossom. 😂 I love 💗 the new bed and tree, Steph. 😅 you always do such a terrific job instructing and giving fun tips like water cardboard sheets. 😂
Steph, you and George work so well together. Those plants you chose are good looking, and when you add perennials and annuals that bed will look terrific! Great video.
Thanks for the great tip on using pallet cardboard! My son works in a factory that receives supplies on wooden pallets and they always dispose of lots of cardboard. Using this will save me lots of time, not having to remove labels. tape and staples. etc. Always enjoy your videos, thank you
Cardboard is also great to prevent weeds! When I first had my front yard removed the gardener didn't do as he said he would, using something good to get rid of any weed roots. Fortunately for me I wasn't planning to plant in the ground in the while area, but use a lot of large containers and some pavers and "gravel". Somewhere I heard or read that cardboard is a great weed barrier, and I've got proof that it really is! Of Course if dust, etc, gets into the gravel, seeds that birds drop can root, but they pull up very easily, and vinegar is safe to use to really kill roots, plus repel squirrels, etc.
The new garden bed looks so good!! I enjoyed watching you and George working together. Your selection of shrubs and trees is pleasing to the eye for sure. Love the cobble stone edging as well. Seeing it done from start to finish made for a great video.
Thank you for this video! I have always been curious about how trees ordered by mail arrive. It's great to see them all planted up. I appreciate you sharing your soil mixture process for the new conifers in the new garden bed. Thank you for the step by step process for edging with the stones and fabric, laying cardboard, and covering with mulch. I save all the rocks I dig up too and often use them in my garden borders.
Hi There! You are so welcome. Lucile is a gem! Her trees are always top notch in terms of quality and size. We've only been collecting them for about 3 years, but I've ordered from her on several occasions and have always been happy with my purchases. I find calling her is best to place an order, and she is so knowledgeable and helpful in offering suggestions when you need a bit of guidance on a choice.
Hi Steph, the new bed looks so nice, I love your choices! Thanks for the big box cardboard idea and using the brown paper bags around corners etc, GOOD TIPS!
I really enjoy watching you two together as a team. The new trees and shrubs look great and so did your lunch. We don’t get lunches like that here in SE Wisconsin. I m really enjoying your videos. I bet you will have some good cooking recipes over the winter months. Thanks my garden friend
What a Beautiful Bed! It definitely complements the other bed. Your selection of Japanese Maples just keeps growing. What a Variety! Love the dwarf conifers you picked . This space is going to be Amazing!
I am in the Lower Hudson Valley and we also have plenty of rocks. I have been building low stacked stone walls with mine. I like what you are doing with yours.
I work at Sherwin Williams and their paint boxes are the best for sheet mulching! They don’t have any tape on them and the fit together beautifully. Just go to your local store and ask to have them. Be careful though…you’ll be tempted to start painting when you see the inspirational colour wall.
Hi, thanks for the tip on the cardboard. I actually got some from a friend who works in a warehouse but didn't think to check the wholesale stores💡, thanks!
Your new garden bed is a beautiful addition to your landscape. Thank you for the information on a great source of cardboard for sheet mulching. Would appreciate more details on the staking method used for the Japanese maple. We’ve alway used tall stake, I like that low profile of your staking method
Hi Nita, We have also used tall stakes for our trees before as it really depends on the size of the tree. In this case he felt the shorter stakes were sufficient and he put them crossing to provide stability. He's always careful to not drive the stake into the root as to not hurt the tree. In this other recent video there's another example of this where he uses a method he calls the "tee pee", and here he used smaller/thinner bamboo stakes as it was a smaller tree, and we also explain the type of tape he likes to use: th-cam.com/video/QF6YiEdF2t0/w-d-xo.html
Love the plants you picked out and they're beautiful!! You're blessed that your husband enjoy gardening it's quality time. My husband doesn't care to garden again he's good at other stuff just can't think of it at the moment hehehehe!
I am so proud you and George, you guys are great couple ,working together, soon your video will get to million viewers. Great job. You are Excellent teacher, Thank you guys for great videos ❤
You are a genius Steph! Who would have thought of getting that cardboard. It is perfect! I love seeing you and George interact. You work so well together. Thanks for sharing and your new bed looks great!
Always love your video's, your new Japanese Maple bed is so beautiful. Thank you for always giving us great information on the plants, flowers, trees and the list goes on and on. You are definitely one of my favorite U Tubers.❤😊.❤
I really love your channel, and love seeing you and your husband working together you’re both so cute. Great ideas about the cardboard and planting. Thank you.
That is such a great idea on using that type of cardboard! You're right, boxes are great, I get a lot from my recycling center & from big item deliveries we've had BUT the staples & labels can really be a pain. Sheet mulching works really well for me too!
I really enjoy your channel. I always learn something! I also appreciate your 'manner' of sharing and appreciate seeing your husband involved too. Thank you. I subscribed today ❤
Your yard is so unique and inspiring! I have always wanted a Japanese garden in my backyard. Watching you and your husband create this fantastic space gives me the confidence to do this myself and save much money on labor and materials (through smart, patient shopping).
Great video! The new bed is beautiful! I love the tree choices. Going to look into some of those for myself. I thought I was the only one that packed my car full of mulch like that. 😂 I can also relate to being a plant geek wherever I go, especially while I am driving. My husband just laughs at me. 😊
Hi Anne, Thank you so much!! lol, I pack way too much into my van, we use it like our pickup truck. So your definitely not alone there. Plant geeks are the best geeks 💚
Hi Stef 🌺.Well done . I love how this bed project turned out and how you arranged the plants beautifully in it . Your Japanese Maples looks so beautiful also the other plants . Have awonderful day. 🌺🌻🌺
We call that cardboard “slip sheets”. My son gets deliveries on pallets that utilize the slip sheets. He runs an agri-business (feed, seed, fertilizer, etc.) so that’s another source for those interested.
Brilliant idea on the cardboard! No tape to deal with. I guess I’ll have to force myself to go to the big box store. I think I need a George. Does he hire out?😅 Enjoy your new additions! Blessings…daisy
I really enjoyed this video for your enthusiasm as well as for how much concise information you provide without a bunch of annoying fluff or verbiage. Now I want to go buy some little conifers like the ones you found!! Thanks for this video!
Hey Steph: I literally just went over to Amanda @She’s a Mad Gardener and told her where you get your Japanese maples because you know exactly what you’re doing and she needs one for Zone 8a...not sure it will even do well in Texas but that’s for Lucile to help her with thanks again!!!
Hi Jo! We love it too. I agree, we are so fortunate to have each other. It was delicious! My favorite summer (and fall lol) treat. Thank you so much! 🥰
That bed with all the new trees looks fabulous!! My hubby and I have created soooooooo many new beds with cardboard……(love the new hint about the sheets of cardboard around the water bottles etc!)
You’re most welcome my sista!! We’ve had our current place for two yrs now and all we’ve been working on is the outside….adding beds, more trees to the already mature trees, etc …..and we always say “our neighbors must think we are crazy” (as we throwin’ down all this cardboard 😂😜🤣📦) and then presto-change another new bed area ❤️❤️🌲🌲
@jeansandhoodiegardengal2975 lol I think my neighbors are already so used to my crazy garden antics that they dint even bat an eye, even when I'm filming in the front yard 😅 isn't it such a fun transformation? It happens so fast with hr cardboard. So great!! 💚
Ya girl…..it’s absolutely amazing how quickly an area can change so drastically ❤️ Bawrahahhahaha 😂😂🤣🤣 your neighbors are like “here they go again” 🙋🏼♀️
Corrugated cardboard is the favorite of earthworms so they do the tilling for you. Good idea about the pallet cardboard. The new bed looks very pretty.
We’ve been dark and gloomy too! In the lower 50s. Pretty much went from the 80s to the 50s! I have a little bit more planting to do, but hard to get moving when so dark! I live in Michigan, Detroit burbs!
Absolutely love your new trees, wow wish I could get my hubby to be as energetic on doing my new garden beds lol!!! He works so hard all the time and out of town quite bit so makes things a little difficult but we will get there. Thanks for all the tips!
You have such a beautiful and spacious property. One thing our southcoast lots have in common is a never ending supply of rocks. Last week you convinced me to check out the 1/2 price sale at Home Depot. Thank you very much.I got some good bargains. Thanks this week for reminding me that I better get to Bayside before it closes for the season. Gardening can definitely work up an appetite.
May I recommend adding composted pine bark to your soil mix for shrubs and trees? It’s really good for the roots and keeping the soil from compacting. In my opinion better than vermiculite . Also very good for Hosta. Love the Coast of Maine compost but it’s a little pricey
You just blew my mind with the paper grocery bags! This is exactly what I need for a small bed I started last year that is already full of weeds. I will place the paper bags and mulch on top, will be easy to work around all the perennial plantings! How long approx does the cardboard take to break down?
Great place for a new garden, especially with the wall surrounding it. It's going to be beautiful. Can't wait to see it develop overtime. George has caught the planting bug, which is lovely to see. Not bad on the eye, if you don't mind me saying. Lol Jo😊
No rocks where I live in Massachusetts, I love 💕 it , at my previous home it was the opposite, i couldn’t dig a hole without hitting rock . The new bed is great , you selected beautiful plants for it , I love 💕 Japanese Maples. Have you ever looked into the Redbud tree called “Flame thrower “ ? the leaves are different colors throughout the season , stunning .
Hi Steph! My husband and I enjoy your videos and particularly like how you take the time to explain your process and encourage us,your viewers, to take charge of our gardens and do what will make us happy.

Lucile Whitman is a jewel. If you're ever in Oregon, you must visit her in person and see her beautiful gardens.
I’ve been cardboard mulching to kill the grass to create a new bed for 17 years now. What a game changer!
Thanks for the great tip on using pallet cardboard! My son works in a factory that receives supplies on wooden pallets and they always dispose of lots of cardboard. Using this will save me lots of time, not having to remove labels. tape and staples. etc. Always enjoy your videos, thank you
Another easy place for cardboard is Aldi's grocery. The goods are shelved in their boxes.
The new garden looks terrific!! Thanks for sharing.
That paper bag trick for going around curves is amazing! Thanks for sharing this project. It's always fun to see them start to finish.
My fav quick methods in the garden: sheet Mulching!
You have a wonderful “assistant”. I hope he is paid well. 😘😉PS I would die to have your grass. 😊
