- 12 सितंबर, 1897 को सुबह 8 बजे सारागढ़ी किले के संतरी ने दौड़कर अंदर ख़बर दी कि हज़ारों पठानों का एक लश्कर झंडों और नेज़ों (भाला) के साथ उत्तर की तरफ़ से सारागढ़ी क़िले की तरफ़ बढ़ रहा है. उनकी तादाद 8,000 से 14,000 के बीच थी. संतरी को फ़ौरन अंदर बुला लिया गया और सैनिकों के नेता हवलदार ईशेर सिंह ने सिग्नल मैन गुरमुख सिंह को आदेश दिया कि पास के फ़ोर्ट लॉकहार्ट में तैनात अंग्रेज़ अफ़सरों को तुरंत हालात से अवगत कराया जाए और उनसे पूछा जाए कि उनके लिए क्या हुक्म है? कर्नल हॉटन ने हुक्म दिया, "होल्ड यॉर पोज़ीशन." यानी अपनी जगह पर डटे रहो. एक घंटे के अंदर क़िले को तीन तरफ़ से घेर लिया गया और ओरकज़ईयों का एक सैनिक हाथ में सफ़ेद झंडा लिए क़िले की तरफ़ बढ़ा. उसने चिल्ला कर कहा, "हमारा तुमसे कोई झगड़ा नहीं है. हमारी लड़ाई अंग्रज़ों से है. तुम तादाद में बहुत कम हो, मारे जाओगे. हमारे सामने हथियार डाल दो. हम तुम्हारा ख्याल रखेंगे और तुमको यहाँ से सुरक्षित निकल जाने का रास्ता देंगे." बाद में ब्रिटिश फ़ौज के मेजर जनरल जेम्स लंट ने इस लड़ाई का वर्णन करते हुए लिखा, "ईशेर सिंह ने इस पेशकश का जवाब ओरकज़ईयों की ही भाषा पश्तो में दिया. उनकी भाषा न सिर्फ़ सख़्त थी बल्कि गालियों से भी भरी हुई थी. उन्होंने कहा कि ये अंग्रेज़ों की नहीं महाराजा रणजीत सिंह की ज़मीन है और हम इसकी आख़िरी सांस तक रक्षा करेंगे." 'बोले सो निहाल, सत श्री अकाल' के जयकारे से सारागढ़ी का क़िला गूंज उठा.
