Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil narrates the story of Operation Khukri, when 233 soldiers of the Indian Army were held hostage in Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa. Operation (Op) KHUKRI was an unique multinational operation launched in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), involving India, Ghana, Britain and Nigeria. The aim of the operation was to break the two month long siege laid by armed cadres of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) around two companies of 5/8 Gorkha Rifles (GR) Infantry Battalion Group at Kailahun. My classmates in the Indian army have been leading Peace Keeping forces units in Africa and I have heard many stories like this. The contribution of the Indian army to the UN Peace keeping force is never publicised in India, though the UN has praised Indian forces over and over again for their bravery, intellect and discipline. There are numerous stories of valour like this which never come to our own people.

The initial name of the UN mission was United Nations Observers Mission in Sierra Leone and within six months it was renamed United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone when a substantial number of UN troops were deployed.
I was an Military Observer and was deployed in Daru along with the Indian Battalion at the time of this extraordinary Operation. This operation broke the backbone of RUF and exposed their vulnerabilities.

Well done Lallantop . it is a very famous operation launched by Indian Army. It is more important because Royal Forces of Britain refused to provides boots on ground . They helped only with few transport helicopters. Negotiations of UN with rebels failed to break the stalemate for months. Then India sent its Para commandos which launched operation with Gorkha. It gave rebels their biggest defeat. There is also a monument there to commemorate heroics of Indian Army. Locals lifted Indian army on their shoulders . They sang songs and danced. Lessons: No one will come to help you . You have to be capable enough. Well done INDBATT-1. Jai Hind. operation Khukri.
