- When Kawasaki UK lent us a 125 Ninja to test we thought we'd use it to tackle some of the stereotypes around 125cc motorcycles.
Can a 125 do motorway speeds?

So we went on a 125 mile trip from The Cat N Fiddle to Anglesey Circuit, Mostly on motorways and duel carriageways. Camped over night, took part in a track day, rode back to Manchester and nearly all on one tank of fuel.
The bike was loaded up with a tent, sleeping bag, pannier bags, a lock, camera equipment and change of clothes.
Then because I was doing a track day I was going to need a one piece set of leathers, so I opted for the RST TracTech Evo 4 leathers with the RST CoolMax base layers. With the suit being perforated, I also used the RST Wind Block Gilet under underneath the leathers to help keep me warm. I wore a pair of RST Pilot summer gloves and packed a pair of RST waterproof Sport Mid gloves in case the weather conditions worsened. I also used the RST S1 waterproof boots and took a one piece waterproof over suit so that if it did start to rain I could stop and cover up. Then to top it off (pun intended) I used a Arai RX7v helmet and I also took a spare visor incase I had to ride in the dark. All the bike gear used is available from MyMoto UK stores.
All of the camping and bike gear added up to a fair weight for a 125 Ninja to carry.
We are extremely grateful that Kawasaki UK lent us this bike to test and we are also equally grateful of James Whitham Track Training letting us stay overnight at Trac Môn and do a few laps of the circuit.

Brilliant review. Really enjoyed that test and the road trip and track day added to the interest. Great to see the shout out for the AR125 at 4.40 too which is also a fabulous little bike. I wonder how the new Ninja 125 performs without a speed limiter?
Thanks Shaun. I’m glad you liked it. Ideally I’d have liked to have had your AR125 in the video along side the little ninja but time was too tight. I would definitely like to do a video about your AR’s at some point though.
I ride a z900 now and love it. This video brings back memories of 125cc riding and trying to overtake but losing all momentum once you pull out from the slipstream of the vehicle in front. Great video guys

Yep, I remember slipstreaming, building up enough speed to overtake, then pulling level with the driver and having that awkward moment of looking the driver in the eyes and not being able to go past. Then slowly having to drop back…Looking back, great days.
They didn't allow me on track with my Ninja 125 when I still had it. But I definitely went on tour through Wales as well. It was great fun.

I remember the mid 90s when my 1986 TZR 125 would easily hit 100mph and stay reliable. I did 65k miles on that bike in all weathers. It was fully deristricted with operational YPVS.
I used to have an early TZR250 and I loved it. I miss the smell of 2 stroke and how it used to scream when it hit the powerband. This bike is no comparison on speed or power to the old two stroke 125’s, but it’s as good as you’re going to get if you’re buying a new 125. The handling, sound and build quality are all really good.
I had beautiful mid 80's TZR and absolutely loved it - why didn't i just keep it in my mothers garage???? Wish i had it as a reminder of my youth...
My younger brother had an Rd 125 in 1987 and I rode it a few times, it was quick for a 125 and I once gave a mate a lift on it and he weighed about 17 stone I was about 11 and was riding along and remember looking at the speedo and it was registering 85 mph 😳😆
had a tzr had every mod done to it ,i could find or come up with bullet proof engine
The old school 125's were ripping. 2 stroke era also.
I have a Kawasaki Z400 and the power is perfect to me, no issue with any road and you can use all it's power. I have had it two years and love it to bits. My first bike was a Kawasaki KH125

I have the 2022 Honda Grom. 125cc is less about speed and more about manoeuvrability. And really, they're just heaps of fun to ride.
I totally agree. I have ridden plenty of big bikes and this 125 was so a lot of fun in comparison to them. Where you loose out on the thrill of the power, it makes up for in the challenge of the ride.
I rode to Italian Alps, just north of Turin on a Honda H100s2 back in the 90’s, these small bike just go. Great vid

I’ve had a bmw K1600 the R1250R an S1000R a Bmw G310R and I own a Triumph Speed Triple 1200
I’ll be honest for riding every day the little G310 R would be my choice even though it’s the least powerful, it’s so easy to ride and move about it’s remarkable 👍🏾

I toured all over on my yzf r125. A roads, B roads, motorways. All no trouble. I got it when they first came out in 2008, the only alternative back then was the RS 125 which was a 2 stroke and Honda's old cbr 125 which was a small frame bike. The Yamaha was the first full size four stroke modern sports bike in the 125 class. My first was black, after it got stolen at university a couple years later i got a blue one with some updates. It was a great bike, handled great would do 85mph following traffic. I went all over the country, from north to south. Thousands of miles.

@@mymoto-uk no problem, thanks for the content and the reply. Yea its pretty great, at the time even my step dad who rode big Triumphs and stuff at the time and even he loved it. The success of a full size sport chassis with a 125 engine in the yzf r125 led to the ninja 125 ect. They are great bikes all of them and far more capable than many give them credit for. I ride bigger bikes now but still keep a 125 around just for the love of them and the memories they made.

Cool video and takes my memories back some decades to the late 80's when everyone in my area wanted the RD125 after they had served their year aged 16 on a kitted/bored out 50cc. Then those who stayed with bikes went for the Ninja GPX600R or GPZ900R. Would love a motorbike again but sadly roads are a lot busier and too many idiots out there. Happy riding fella and all the best.
Hi David. I started out in 1998 on a Kawasaki AR50 when I was sixteen and moved onto a tzr 250 when I passed my test. I still love the older bikes now and I’d love to have an RD in the garage, or even a GPZ900. I’ve had two RD125lc’s and they are brilliant, way better than the AR125!
Started on a RD125 then at 18 went on a RD350 for a while and then at 19 , GSR-R 750 1985, Somehow managed to survive that.
I had a 98 rs125 back in 2001. I went from derby to skegness with camping gear and It did it with ease plus I was 18stone aswell. And I had another 125 it was a cagiva supercity 125 a very fast bike. It brings back the memories.

I think, when we are new to biking, we don’t let something like the size of our bike stop us for going on long ride’s because we’re all so eager to just be out riding. Going down the A55 doing 55mph is epic....I'm 52 lived near the A55 once, now down I Somerset and about to get my full bike licence....I can't wait to revisit 😢😂

ive got a kawasaki ninja but 19 reg & i think the bike is awesome cos its a low seat & light to handle & hes right when he says its cheap to buy mine was £3500 last summer i like it cos its what i need for work & to fill it u only cost less than a tenner i went nottingham on it & i got there with still a quarter a tank of fuel i didnt realise it had a reserve
I remember buying a brand new Kawasaki KMX 125 in 1989. It was £1500! God I loved that bike once I derestricted it and fit a Fresco end can. My last bike was a GSXR1000 which I sold 13 years ago, loved that too. Unfortunately my biking days are over, but I do miss the many bikes I have owned and ridden.
Hi Simon. There are so many bikes that I've had that I wish I'd kept. The main one being a TZR250, but it's easy for me to forget that I needed to sell them to fund the next bike. @mymoto-uk I rode my friends KR1-S 250 in the early 90's and loved it. It was of course similar to your TZR250. I was riding a Yamaha FZR1000 back then and we swapped bikes for half a day. Such night and day bikes, but we both had a lot of fun.
I had a 125 gamma 95 mph it was a C reg brand new 🧠💚 since then had so many big bikes 🏍️ and cars I’m just getting to old for it now….. old bones 🦴 😂 have a great Xmas buddy enjoy the memories 🧠💪🤝 Nath
I did lands end to John O'Groats on a gsxr 125 a few years back for a change rather than take the R1. Was ment to go on the R1 but had a problem on the first day so just took the Mrs Bike. Sat at 70 75mph most of the way. Had to go from Stirling up to Sango Sands Camped then early morning to John O'groats then south over 2 days.

Great and interesting review. I have a 2019 Suzuki Gsx 1000. In 2018 I restored an abandoned wreck of a 2010 Honda cbf 125 and ride it everywhere and have so much fun on it. Actually have done more miles on it than the Suzuki gsx 1000. 125s are fun even for experienced riders.

We ride as a group on little Honda Grom 5spds . You can tour Wales from Merseyside easily on one 6ltr tankful !! We get close to 200 miles to the gallon , 4 1/2 Ltrs . Paid £3500 for it and have done 6500 miles without any issues 👍
Hi Robert. Thank you for leaving us a comment on our channel. I bet you have such a laugh riding them. I think that CC's don't necessarily make a bike more fun, often it can be that the smaller the bike and especially if there are a group of you in the same size bikes, the more fun it can be. I would love to test ride one of the Honda Monkey bikes in a future video.

Love this, nice to see someone taking one of the small bike out for a proper trip. I did laugh though, when you were going through all the luggage and there was a 40lb lock and chain lol. I thought yup, that's the UK alright. Keep it up bro. I am 52 and been riding since I was 8, I am an ex London DR and love to see the new breed come alive.

It was a real laugh to film and it was even funnier when I arrived at the track day, parked up and a guy looked at the bike, then turned to me and said "Is this your first track day?"😂. I had to keep explaining that it was all for a TH-cam video and that I wouldn't normally ride a 125 all that distance to do a track day. I bought a Yamaha yzfr 125 2008 for £850 plus £400 to ship as it didn’t run… only issue was a dirty air box 👍👍👍 only 93k on the clock

£1250 for a 16 year old bike with nearly 100 000 miles 😂 you got robbed dude! You can get 2017/2018 bikes with less than 20 000 miles for 2 grand ISH 😂 not to mention a 125 is rode hard every where your always flat out so they dont last long and yours has 93 thousand on the clock
When i was getting a new 125 last year it was a toss up between the Ninja 125 or the Aprilia RS125 and the RS topped it only slightly for me because of the looks. Done a couple of rides to wales and back (from midlands) on it so far and its been so much fun. Love these little 125s and i have been tempted to trade in my RS125 and get ones of these... very tempted after seeing this brilliant video. Top notch bud

I hate how slow 125s are these days. My old Yamaha RD125 topped 100mph and got there in a flash. These modern 4 strokes take a decade just to hit 60.
Yeah. It’s only the same as how the Honda CB / CG 125s have always been. Unfortunately, with the demise of two strokes, the days of fast and light small capacity bikes are behind us.
My RD was slow.
It was depressing until I put a new pipe on it but it would only get to 80 and it was quick to 60 by today's standards but not that quick.
I think some clocks were way out or the early versions were faster.
Mine was one of the last ones before the TZR came out.
I did a very similar trip to this on my first 125 when I was 18. Rode from Warringon down to silverstone for the weekend and back, loaded up with soft panniers and a rucksack. I didn't do motoroways as I still had L plates, but I took plenty of motorway-style A roads during the trip. While not imporssible, wringing the neck of a carbed 125 to get 65 mph on those roads was the least fun aspect of the trip.
Something like a 250-300cc bike is a brilliant step up, more usable on the motorways, (and on track), while still being small enough to use hard on the roads without getting into trouble. My next bike in the form of an R3 proved this.
Hi Druid. Yeah, the motorway part wasn't much fun and especially with my forgetting my ear plugs and the Arrow exhaust was thumping away. The smaller, twisty back roads are where it got really interesting. I think you're totally right, the R3 will be the perfect bike, combining power, weight and fuel economy. Fast enough to be fun and slow enough to ride hard on the road (without breaking too many limits). So many people have mentioned the R3 in the comments that I'm going to get in touch with Yamaha and see if we can do a video on one of them. @@mymoto-uk Honestly I loved my R3 so much that when it got written off, once insurance was settled, I went and bought another one. I'd definitely reccomend one. If you manage to get hold of a newer one it would be onteresting to hear your thoughts as the two I had were '17 and '18 model years.

I have the Z250SL , basically the same bike minus the fairing and with straight bars but also with twice the power . It’s lots of fun you can basically rag it everywhere.

I understand and appreciate a nimble bike versus a lead sled, but that's a lot of kit and money for 15 horsepower.

Plus, if it’s a learner that gets it then it could possibly be done on a lease purchase deal with the option of upgrading once the rider passes their test? I did stoke to Cornwall on my 05 suzuki vanvan rv 125 and because of L plates had to use backroads and it managed perfectly fine and had alot of fun doing it . I did end up on a motorway in a snow storm by accident once but managed to get off not long after

@mymoto-uk I kept the vanvan for about 10 years after passing my car test then sold it and recently got a sinnis 125cc Chinese Honda clone
I have just enjoyed a lovely 250 mile round trip from Oban to Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland and back again on my Honda Varadero 125. Admittedly I was hoteling it so no tent etcetera but it was joyous. It’s more of an adventure on a 125!😂

my Hoodlum can keep up with that - just. I did a 120 mile run from Edgware to Nottingham today, in just 3 and a quarter hours. Stopped twice, smoke break and the second time was just for fuel. Did the return journey of 240 miles of A-roads on just 9 litres. That's barely 2/3 of a tank.
The fuel economy on a 125 is incredible. We’d love to get our hands on a Sinnis press bike to do a video on. Especially their Terrain model.
Brilliant review video, can't help but think no way 5.5k for a 125 4 stroke. Rather buy a rough rs125 and spend the same doing one up and smoke this 125 4 strokes.
Hi Scott. Yeah, I think a lot of us bikers would potentially do the same. But, a lot of 17 year old's who are just getting into biking will end up just walking into a dealership and getting a new bike on finance. Nice looking bike but i had an aprillia RS 125 for 3 years, i can honestly say it makes that kawasaki look like a 50cc. Standard top speed 84mph, sounds better, looks better, very reliable, i used to ride it everywhere in all weather. Only bad thing about it was it had no petrol gauge but it did have a reserve tank which you had to switch to while riding. Good review, keep up the great work

Years ago I had an Aprillia RS125 2001 model, fully derestricted 33bhp, Arrow pipe, up jetted..
123 mph.. Was an absolute Rocket..,
The power band was naughty..
Good for learning on.
Had many since then, after that I had the Kawasaki ZXR 400. Did 137 mph.. Now I have a tuned Kawasaki ZX10r… Derestricted 205mph 😄👋🏼👋🏼. But I’d say to anyone, learn the lines in the road and corners..

I've got an RS also and mine will go 106mph in warm weather and around 115mph when it's near 0 degrees and I once saw 118mph when It was freezing cold weather but I don't do that often!
Great bikes and they'll keep up with others in the corners and take a lead when there is a few consecutive corners, I've had loads of fun and been on some awesome days out on it .,
My bike to do 125 miles is just under a tank of fuel,. 13.5 litres to fill , so I'd need 3 tanks to make this video 😳🤷🏻♂️ And I'll of had a great time 😋👍🏼👍🏼
That was totally brilliant Man, enjoyed every minute! Great credit doing the 125's, have two as well as a 700 and in the summer, have to admit I get masses of smiles inside!!! Watching YT with all its new 1300 BM's etc, not that interesting to me but the Lady Editor of MCN, interviewed a few weeks ago by Michael Nieves, again was totally riveting, especially cos she got 130 out of it!!
Hi Drdoollittle. When Kawasaki asked me which bike I wanted to borrow, I said I'd like to start at the beginning like most learners and have a 125. They were a bit baffled as to why I wanted that when there was things like the zx10r on offer but I still stand by what I say in the video, that the "fun factor" of a bike isn't purely down to its horsepower. I totally get why you would have a couple of 125's along side a 700 and I think more more bikers would understand the reasoning behind it if they gave it a go. Thanks for this it brings back memories of when i was a young man and toured Holland on my totally unsuitable little honda xl 100 trail bike with an indicated top speed of 50 mph so probably 45 actual.

@@mymoto-uk It was 1979 I was very young, just passed my test and was trying to get to Assen for the Dutch TT race on my own.
I quickly realised I couldn't use the duel carriageways because it was too dangerous as I was so slow, i realised and I'd never make it in time using other roads and it was pissing it down. So I camped near Hook of Holland and then rode up to Amsterdam and eventually looped back around to get the ferry to Harwich. Then 200 miles home to where I used to live in Sheffield.

Yeah, especially at that time of year. I did go prepared with my waterproofs though 😄
The old motorcycles from the 80's were a damn sight more powerful than this Kawasaki, in particular the old Yamaha RD125DX, and RD125LC.
Hi Kbarnbrook. There is definitely no disputing that the 2 stroke 125s are quicker. And smell better 😄. With new 2 stroke 125's being a thing of the past and electric bikes threatening to replace these smaller capacity bikes, these current 125's could be a swan song. I feel sorry for any young learners that don't get a chance to experience a 2 stroke though. Had the NSR125R import and de restricted with full racing arrows exhaust had to rebuild a couple of times but 100+ and quick getting there got to love a 2stroke. When you were coming up the hill shame you couldn't draft from a car infront that helps loads on small bike but bike did you proud 👍
Hi Daz. A draft up the hill would have definitely helped but it would have probably needed to be a car towing a caravan for me to keep up with it 😄. I love the old NSR 125’s and I regularly search for a cheap one on auction sites. Getting trick parts for them and big bore kits seems impossible these days though. @@mymoto-uk , a friend bought an NSR125 as their first bike in 2018. We were hunting around for a learner bike and when things like YBR125s in reasonable condition were £1300+ they seemed over priced. Spotted an NSR so she bought that. She passed her test ~5 months later and bought a bigger bike but kept the NSR for occasional smokey fun.
Suspect a lot of the 125 2 strokes are now owned by people who have larger bikes as well. I still have my RS125 that I bought new in 1993 (and I owned an FZ750 at the time as well).
Hi @@katywalker8322 . A friend of mine who is now over 40, has just bough an Aprilia rs125 because he had a NSR125 when he was 17 and his friend had an Aprilia. He said he always got smoked by it and really wanted one but couldn't afford it. And now at this age he's finally got one 😄.
@@mymoto-uk they are fun. My RS is certainly quicker (but it is an early one with the larger carb, decent exhaust, etc), but now in my 50s I am not that bothered about the last couple of mph
The surprising bit is my friends first experience of a bike was me taking them pillion on my TZR250, which doesn't have the most welcoming pillion seat!
We went to the NEC bike show in 2018, with me on my TZR250 and her on the NSR125, and that day bike parking was in a spare hall. When we started the bikes to leave a guy came over to sit in the 2 stroke smoke!

These new 125's look the bis......... but are a pile of crud, they sound awful as well!
I had a suzuki rg125 and it did 90mph stock, a bit of pipe in the power valve and 3 boltts removed and done back up it did a ton.
Had it over bored to about 185cc using a wiesco piston (thank you TTS) and aftter rejetting etc it did who knows?....... needle went off tthe clock.
I can't pitty kids enough now a days that are stuck with such slow machines, I would say poor buggers but the bikes now cost a bomb too.

I ride a wr125x everyday, it's a wicked bike for what I do mostly country lanes and nearby villages and towns, good in the wet too because of the upright position a supermoto gives you
Hi George. I bet it is! I think a 125 off road bike is also a great option if you were to stick knobbly tires on and do some off roading. There is more that enough power and the lighter overall weight is a big advantage. Plus, you cant go wrong with a bike from one of the big manufacturers like Yamaha. Great video, enjoyed the watch! I passed my test over 10 years ago, all I wanted was a big bike I just wanted rid of my YZFR125 at the time but looking back in my early 30s now, 125s were great fuel efficient fun little bikes yet we couldn't wait to get rid of them, mad really! Sure I love my big bikes and won't own another 125 but they are so much better than people give them credit for!
Hi Aaron. Because most of us bikers start out on 125’s, we have fond memories of them and when that’s all you’d experienced at the time, nothing was going to stop you. I started out in an AR50 at 16 and I remember spending a whole day riding down to Matlock and back, what an adventure that was. It’s easy to dismiss 125’s when you move on but they are still a lot of fun even if you are used to bigger bikes. Just taken my 2018 Ninja 400 that cost me 4 k a year ago with just 7000 miles on the clock from Brighton to Inverness and it was not uncomfortable. Will be taking it around NC500 over next couple days. I am 5ft 9 , 185 pounds and 48 years old. Natural step up from this 125 😅 and what a fantastic little bike that does everything.
I definitely think that a ninja 400 would be a great bike. The 125 ninja was a fantastic bike and if it had an extra 25bhp it would have been perfect. Let us know how you get on with your NC500 trip on it 👍
Keep an eye on CFMOTO. I bought a 300SR for my girlfriend to learn on because it would not be too buzzy at highway speeds but still totally newbie friendly... It was so much fun I used it to commute to my London office occasionally. Has a 292cc 28 hp single cylinder from KLR300 Kawasaki, great price, great looks and no reliability issues.
Kawasaki did bring out the Ninja 250SL in 2015 for a couple of years.... basically identical to the 125, but fitted with the single cylinder 250 engine from the KLX. They are fairly rare as the didn't hardly sell. Think they are around 27bhp
The NC500 went well... Had all the weather lol, came up from Sussex and back to Sussex so did just short of 2000 miles in total. Saw lots of bigger bikes, some smaller classic bikes but nothing like the ninja 400. She gets great mileage and is really good for touring.... A bigger windscreen helps, my other mods include adjustable levers, tail tidy, Scorpion Carbon Slip on can (sounds great IMO).

Nicely done, and you called it right at the end, IMHO. If only 125s were given just a little bit more power, they could do everything needed. That's why I have a 2 stroke 125! 😁 It has enough power to do the 70 to 85 acceleration briskly, which is what you need on the motorway to avoid mixing with cars that didn't see you, or getting up hills at 70. I just wish they'd make 125s that rev a bit higher and make more power, but new riders don't really understand and want to go for maximum capacity straight away, which is fine for touring but sports bikes should be lightweight. So the problem is that there's no market for higher power 125s. Shame. I also have a GSXR, and the 125 2 stroke is more fun to ride in most real world situations because I can red-line it without breaking the speed limit! I think a 2 cylinder 125 V2 4 stroke that can rev to 15k rpm could be made to produce about 30hp and be perfect to restrict to 15hp. I'd buy one! For now, I have to accept to rebuild my engine every 10k miles or so, which TBH only takes a couple of hours and less than £100 for a re-bore and new piston. It's even ULEZ compliant! I have considered getting a RC390, too.
I did Anglesey from Sheffield on my little Anf125. Was fine, although small tank is annoying. Any doubts about what a 125 can do, check out Ed March's honda C90 exploits. Cheers. Sheffield

I am 49 and besides a very very short ride on a Suzuki RM 80 Many years ago, i have never rode a bike. I have been thinking about getting my provisional and getting a 125 bike, i never considered a road bike like this! Thank you for this video, it allowed me, a total novice (unlike my dad) to understand some of the things to consider when buying my first motorbike! Brilliant bike by the way, i have no need to go 200 mph, i have enough fun on my Trek Scratch Air Doing 30! Down a long hill of course

I've been riding for 30+ years and still remember the 125 Yamaha 2 stroke I had when I first started out. It was loads of fun at the time and you could go mad on it knowing that you weren't going to get yourself into too much difficulty.
If I still owned it today, i'd be out on the country roads having fun still. The worst thing about having the lower power is strong headwinds, so I'd say ideally a 250 or 400 might be a better long term bike.
Having ridden bikes since the 80's, all kinds of styles and CC's, i have to say the sweet spot is the 250, i always find the 125cc is on the edge of destroying itself, you always end ou having to over rev it to get moving, specially when joining fast roads, and not enough power to overtake on A roads,
Bigger bikes do the job far too easy and does get kinda boring after a while, almost like your just driving a car, doesnt give you that rewarded feeling at the end of your journey,
Whereas the 250 can cope with motorway speeds perfectly fine and can do it all day long, has enough power to join A roads with ease and enough to overtake cars too, and im still getting over 100mpg when ridden sensibly,
I am of course talking about the Vstrom DL250, but most 250's are the sweet spots, even in the 80's it was the kids on the 250's i used to look up too

In 2020 I rode on L plates from Buxton to Aberystwyth and back on half a tank of fuel 🤷🤣🤣 just over 300 miles round trip. Was a right laugh 💪

@@mymoto-uk I didn't have a huge budget for a first bike. I had a lexmoto assault. And me being close to 18 stone made the little thing work very hard. £1400 brand new with warranty though 🤷

I think Suzuki got it right with the 150cc Gixxer, mine does maximum on the highway 68-70 mph, but in city urban commuting 70-75 easily and without breaking it's back, it all comes down to the open fastness of the highways that keeps the bike back, also the long up hill climbes, but like they say, horses for courses, I stay of the highway, that's my KLR650 territory
What are your thoughts on the build quality between your Suzuki and Kawasaki. Is there anything that stands out between them?
@@mymoto-uk the build quality on the Suzuki is excellent, the engine is basically bulletproof, mine is fuel injection, but they kept it aircooled with a small oil cooler, suspension is typically factory, but I did 2 hours in the saddle and it was comfortable, mine is 3 years old now but still in showroom condition, the engineers didn't skipped or cut corners now where, unfortunately the Kawasaki ninja 125 isn't available in my country, but the 300 was, and now the 400, they are simply beautiful bikes, and as a long term KLR650 owner myself I know the ninja 125 will be successful and reliable just like Kawasaki always was

I have not tried a paved race track, used to do little motocross racing way back in 1980s. too old now and my VL1500 would not be very track friendly. Great entertaining video.

I’ve a Yamaha r3 myself it’s the best of both worlds small bike fuel economy and is still very much capable of smashing speed limits In a very short space of time😂
It will cruise along at 120km’s per hour (motorway limit in Ireland)all day no problem

Currently debating which small bike to buy in the US. I’ve had many 600-800cc class Sport and adventure bikes, as well as an 1100cc sport cruiser, and recently a Royal Enfield 350 which was fantastic for a small bike if you understand its purpose and intent. It’s not light and it’s slower than a 125 like this, but that isn’t the point. My choices are basically a KTM 390, a Ninja 400, or a CB300R. The Versys-X 300 is also in the running. I’ve ridden one and it’s such a fun weird bike!

Lightweight and fun on the back roads and curves with enough power to cruise on a freeway at 80+ MPH if needed with enough extra to pass. Combined riding I'm averaging 60 MPG and not trying.
125cc bikes on a cbt are brilliant for saving fuel even tho there gutless my 600 gets maybe just over 100 miles to a tank and it’s about £20-£30 to fill

I did a near identical trip from my house a few miles east of the Cat and Fiddle to Anglesey and back on my AR80 many years ago, although I had to to avoid the motorways being on L-plates and I did find avoiding the motorway around Colwyn Bay too confusing I ended up back on the motorway stretch.
I bet that was a memorable journey. I used to have a AR50 when I was 16. There is a lot of fun to be had on smaller bikes.
@@mymoto-uk Indeed there is, more of a sense of adventure with them too I enjoyed the AR80. I spent the week there with my girlfriend in her parents caravan, they left us there for the week and returned the following weekend. We toured Anglesey on the little AR without the L-plate :) I prefer small bikes and am seriously considering a GSX-S125. My motorhome struggles a bit on Rhault hill too.
First bike ride now, Hanway Furious. I love it, I'll get a bigger one in 2 years. It's so much fun - and I think it's a great way of getting into motorcycles.

Glad I was a learner in the 2 stroke days. I had an MBX125 which occasaionlly would go off the end of the clock on the flat (last marking was 90mph - probably not accurate), and which I rode everywhere (I regularly went from Nottingham to Winchester for the weekend - 300 mile round trip even before running around over the weekend)
Still like 125s, but they need to be 2 strokes. Performance is quick enough for fun, getting the fun of thrashing the engine, and having an interesting power delivery (torque going up with revs). I have hoarded 125 2 strokes though. While this Kawasaki looks pretty good, performance is just not there.

I passed my test back in 1989, and bought a 400 Superdream as a first bigger bike. Cam chain went so I dug out the MBX125 and realised I liked it more. Hence I bought my first Aprilia. Bought a Futura in 1991, and traded that in for an RS125 in 1993 (one of the first in the country - I got it out of the dealer van to look at it after he picked it up, then bought it). The Futura turned up on Ebay in 2008 so I bought it back.
I have a load of Italian 125 2 strokes in various states. My AF1 Sintesi is currently sitting with the engine in pieces waiting for me to have the time and motivation to rebuild it (crank went - crank is now rebuilt and all the parts are ready to go in). Too many others need me to rebuild them, but vary from Gilera CX125, Cagiva Freccias (including a C9, a bike from 1986 with twin underseat exhausts), Aprilia AS125R (very early Rotax engined Aprilia), etc.
Hoarding issues. No wonder I never have any money.

I've been riding a YZF R125 for the last 6 years (crashed 1, on my second but its the same bike 2 years newer than the first) and I love it loads. So fun to be able to use 100% of a motorcycle almost all the time. Used it to do my 40 mile a day commute to Reading for work and for pleasure riding also. Has a few mods that get the top speed up to 85mph with a 16t front sprocket but I run 15t for more torque as I carry a lot on the back of the bike (rescue gear like puncture repair, socket set, basic tools, med kit for car crashes, etc).
Even though it hospitalized me and I had to have emergency surgery and a short stay in the ICU, the crash took nothing out of my joy of riding and going out on a lovely day through the Chilterns still excites me in a way nothing else does. Love watching kids wave as I go by and using my GoPro to 'spot' exotic cars as I go by. Nothing beats the joy of riding a motorcycle, even a 125.

Very cool machine and an excellent review. My first road bike was a brand new 1990 AR125B7. Compared to the Suzuki RG , the Honda NS and the Yammy TZR it was slower in the top end by quite a lot. It did however have a very strong mid range. With only 12bhp to play with it could barely hold its own on main roads. I can remember trucks pulling to the side for me, and then not having the power to break through the wind drag!
It was a great little bike though and I still think I made the right choice. Now 125's have a lot more power legally available and they are miles safer for it. I recently returned to the world of small bikes with a Suzuki FL125, great fun, and even as 15 years as a test and development rider it still gives me a bigger grin than a 200bhp machine. It's like being 17 again before the world closed in.

You mention goin on the motorway at the begining of the video.. i thought 125cc are not allowed in motorways in the uk?
Before I did the vide I checked up on the legalities of it all and the law is that it must be a minimum of 80cc and the rider must have a full licence. I think because a lot of learners ride 125’s, it has become a general opinion that 125’s aren’t allowed on motorways. I wouldn’t fancy riding a 80cc on the motorway though 😆

Back in the late 1980s my better half bought an Aprilia AF1 125 from a policeman who had taken the 125 stickers off as they got sick of being pulled up by the police!

There are some 125s for sale of the By-Gone era not asking for top money and at a very competitive price however and I'd much rather one of those.
Hi Calum. If you have ridden an RS or a Mito then you’d be disappointed by how quick this is. On the flip side though, I think there are a few things that would impress you. What’s wrong with 55mph max - well if your paying like £4000 for a ninja you expect 75 at least , rs125 will do 90 all day , and you say it’s a 125 so what it’s still a ninja - yeah but it’s just a name they gave the bike so who cares if it’s a ninja ,
its dangerously slow if your gonna be taking it on a motorway
125 in my eyes not for track but to get to work on time and learn the basics of tack days rather than competing the fact you went from Manchester to wales is what I’m looking for and then onto bigger bikes
Hi mrlemonhead3k652. Yes, it’s definitely not a track bike regardless of its sports styling. Although, there is a 125cc race series in the uk called FreeTech in which this bike would be perfect for. It’s biggest advantage is it’s fuel economy and also because it feels like a much bigger bike than it is, which is perfect if you’re aiming to move onto a bigger bike next. The reliability throughout the test we did was unquestionable and I’m sure it would make a great commuter bike as well.

Very enjoyable video . I used to have the aprilia rs 125 years ago. topped out at 110mph screaming it to death!!! my favourite though was the Tzr 125. i had quite a few. Had them showing 100mph fairly easily. I have been diagnosed with ms so my riding days are more limited. i currently own a keeway superlight 125 ( very comfy ) derbi cross city no power at all. and my choice at the minute a sym 125 jet4 scooter. its genuinely faster than the other two!! it hits 70mph easily. keep up the reviews and ride safely buddy . Ideally it would have better if the bike didn't need to rev at 8000 - 9000 rpm to go motorway speed, but it did do it and never showed any signs of failing. Epic road. Years ago took my 125CC from Derby to Wales through the Peaks (where I now live).
Loved it. Just sucked on the dual carriage ways. Was so much fun to throw it around into the corners.
Most of the riders who come to Matlock just all drive like nutters on their 650-1000CC bikes....
Too loud, insanely dangerous in the wrong hands. I don't drive slow and when bikers overtake me in a car (at the speed limit) flying past....
Think a few people should get back to basics on a 250-400cc that's fun and not dangerous.

94 mi per gallon that's pretty great however I'd still like to opt for a 150cc 😂 my current motorcycle is a Kawasaki z250 it gets pretty good mileage

Wow that's a slow 125cc they don't make them like they used to, I remember having a FS1E THAT HAD A BORE KIT A MICRON BEELINE and that could do close to 70mph

I really enjoyed your video as I recently did a similar trip from stockport to Llandudno mainly on the A55 but minus the m56 bit.
But i did it on an AJS Modina 125 cc scooter with a max top speed of 55-60mph if you're lucky. mine held a regular 50-55 mph but the same hill as you made me struggle a lot it knocked my speed down to 40 mph lol, I thought it would never get to the top.
But to be honest, i was quite impressed with it overall with only 7 hp its regarded in our scooter circles as the slowest you can go not to mention its chines and an average mpg of 80. and regarding the ability to carry camping kit, I have done it lots of times to scooter rallies all over the UK and southern Irland including my fat self at 14.5 stone

We love 2 stokes. This was great fun though and it definitely made me want to ride smaller capacity bikes again.
My Son got a great deal on the RC125 last month. £3600 from Fowlers Bristol. I think they had a total of 25 at that price. Great vid thanks for doing this :-)

Takes me back to my Aprilia Rs125 amazing bike as a 17 year old. I do miss the smell of 2 stroke even to this day. Arrow exhaust and 120MPH no problem.

Plan to visit Thailand where there are many 150cc and up little bikes, I Ihave a Honda CBR150R from 2016 and did the trip to Cambodia (250km one way) and back in a day, holding 80kmh for most of the way at 7k rpm it would normally be lower rpm but im a bit heavy at 110kg so I swapped front and rear sprockets for more torque as where I stay has big hills, love my little Honda

i did scotland trips both on my WR and MT125s 600 mile round trips. though popped the baffle back into the exhausts for better top end. couldn't get 70mph easily without them

Thanks Anthony. We have a good range of RST in our stores so it’s easier to grab that than the Dainese gear, which is harder to re stock. I do like my RST gear though, it’s one of the best brands I’ve used when it comes to bang for buck. Thanks for watching our video 👍
