  • As I left my 20s behind me, it is time to reflect on lessons from my 20s. What did I learn, what are my key reflections, any advice I can share? My 20s were an exciting time. I studied at the University of Munich, Bocconi in Milan, London School of Economics and INSEAD. I started working in consulting at McKinsey. I met my wife and married her. Are you feeling behind in life in your 20s? Let me share advice and motivation for 20 year olds. I talk about life lessons to learn in your 20s, and advice for 20 year old girls and boys, women and men. Hope this is a bit of a motivational speech with lessons from my 20s and insights on how to live life in your 20s for personal growth and career success. This will be relevant for students with an interest in consulting such as McKinsey, BCG or Bain, but also other career paths.

    The Netflix part of the video is very relatable to me. I just started working as a consultant a few weeks ago and try to pursue my hobbies and skills even after work days, but most of the time it feels so much easier to chill and watch endless Netflix / TH-cam videos. However, I've noticed that if I do motivate myself to work on projects, go for a run, etc., I tend to be much happier overall.
    I've tried joining some local groups that have similar interests in a way to meet new people and keep myself motivated and somehow accountable. But it's not that easy to find people that you vibe with and that share your exact interest..

    I honestly wish more career advice were straight to the point and detailed like yours in this video!
    1. The importance of standing out and finding a unique experience.
    2. The importance of your usage of free time and how they are the main determinants to your future growth.
    3. The importance of building a savings habit early in your 20s regardless of income size.

    I strongly encourage anyone in their 20s watching this to run the numbers themselves so they can fully appreciate the effect of compound interest. I contributed to my 401k in my 20s but didn't completely max it. After testing different variables, I realized that not doing this left millions, yes millions, of USD on the table. The effect size is that large.

    Great video! I generally think the 20's are a time period that should be dedicated to learn. Learn what's interesting to you, what field you want to work in, what you want to do and achieve in life.. I sometimes hear from friends who are e.g. switching subjects in university that they fear they are losing precious time. But even if you start working at the (rather late) age of 30, you have 35+ years to work in that area. Also still enough time to have a good career, especially if you're passionate about that field. So better gain those insights earlier in life.

    Hi Heinrich, thank you for sharing your experiences! While I'm only just "starting" my twenties, I can verify many of your main points by personal experience. Using time in the evenings for my side job, studying for the GMAT/GRE or applications, even (but not just) while working in Consulting as an Intern, has definitely jumpstarted my career and my pursuit of financial goals. As I've already commented below your other "money" videos, my research into the topic of personal finance has led me to start investing money regularly already at 19, and my savings rate has grown ever since. I'm truly happy every time to see someone proliferating this knowledge or even philosophy among other young people, as lacking knowledge on this is something I'd consider quite dangerous for people's long term financial future. Have a nice evening!
    Regards,
    Darius

    Nearing the end of my time at uni and I would really recommend joining a club or doing a side job. I spent a large part of my uni time rowing 8 times a week and I learnt so much about teamwork and about being in a high-performance environment. After rowing I got a side-job as a part-time teacher, helping students prepare for high-school exams. This too taught me a lot about communication as well as simply already building some working experience. I think that at university there is a lot of focus on academic learning, which is valuable, but that soft skills and network building are often an underrated aspect of being a young person and finding your way in life. I would estimate that 50% of my learning in university was through coursework and 50% was through doing other stuff on the side.

    Hello Heinrich, thank you for all the content! I've been following your channel for a while now and have decided to apply to consulting in the new year. My question is, as a young professional who will be considered a minimally experienced hire (2 years in current position, 3 years total in current industry) applying for a business analyst role in North America, should I try to highlight myself as someone with industry experience and make this my primary selling point? For example, I have extensive experience in all areas of the insurance industry and because insurance is a large industry in the country where I am applying, should I try to highlight my industry experience as my primary strength in my cover letter? Or should I try to highlight the experiences that I had and why they will help me succeed in consulting more generally (understanding MECE, 80/20 rule, all the things you mention in your channel!). My concern is with the former is that I box myself into one particular industry and come off as someone who cannot be a generalist and work on all kinds of projects. My concern with the latter is that I am not highlighting what makes me unique as a candidate and will be left behind in favour of a fresh grad. Thanks a lot for your insights.

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Samuel, if you did collect industry-specific experiences, I do hold it is definitely worth wile to highlight those. Can only help you in the process. Your fear of being put in a box is not completely unjustified, but once you are in there are always options to navigate to the projects you are really interested in :) Best! Heinrich
