I love this book, this book practically every Brazilian in high school reads or does some schoolwork in literature classes, there's another book that is also great by the same author it's called Dom Casmurro

Such a nice review, this book is really acclaimed in Brazil, lot of universities use this reading. If your'e gonna read another Machado de Assis I highly reccomend "Dom Casmurro" wich is commonly known as "everybody's favorite" and till this day ignites debates about the characters actions, there's a hint of mistery towards things tha might or not have happened, fights about it on twitter is almost an annual tradition. If youre interested there's a really good 5 episode TV special from 2008 "Capitu" that captures the essence of the story and is a great display of brazilian productions.

I’m absolutely mind blowed by this masterpiece of a book. It’s so rich and so beautifully written. I chose it for my senior seminar, but I don’t know which approach to look at. I really want to analyze the text, so I thought the formalistic approach is more appropriate for this book. Yet my professor disagrees because the book isn’t written in English, so how can I write about the language and literary devices of a text when I’m not reading it in its original language? I don’t think the translation made the book less than what it is, a masterpiece. What do you think is the right approach in terms of literary criticism for this book?

I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I don't feel qualified to answer your question, however the strength of the novel is from the literary techniques and prose. Therefore, the formalistic approach seems most appropriate if the translation is supposedly accurate.

Hi, I read this book in high School and recommend, The name's "Capitães da Areia" of Jorge Amado, maybe you need a context, but is very good!!!

Now you can go and read some recent novels from Brazilian literature that have not been influenced by European writers. Brazilian literature is very untraditional and flippant. My suggestion is The End by Fernanda Torres. Most Brazilians, and that includes teachers of Literature, are so limited to late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century that they simply can't name what current well-known Brazilian writers are.
