I became homeless in America when Ochukah tried to overthrow Moi from power because my tuition money could not be wired. Looking back more than 40 years later, that was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I learned not to be depending on my parents and sought a job in the coal mines of West Virginia. I will be retiring from a federal job in 1.6 years and Thanks God I was Once Homeless. It made me strong.

As a Ugandan living in Maryland I have made one simple observation amongst some Kenyan comrades here in MD..Alcohol has played a key role in their downfall. Many are battling DUI cases which is the worst for any American whether Immigrant or American born.. a DUI distorts your life and Iam surprised to see it is the same problem haunting fellow East African Kenyans in Boston.
Dear brothers and sisters stay away from alcohol if you know you are going to operate any vehicle because a DUI in America is like a death sentence.Praying for my dear brothers and sisters going through these trying moments to carry through and flourish again.
Good advice.
It killed my ex. He couldn't stop drinking no matter how it impacted his health. Unfortunately alcohol is so cheap in America, so people just indulge.

@brianafrika254 OMG you just quoted same words my friends that still drink always ask me.They always wonder how I manage without drinking in this stressful America but I surely have managed year after year.It is all about commitment
Thank you Alex Chamwada for maintaining the dignity of the homeless persons you interviewed. Great approach & journalism. Bless up!!!
I'm a Jamaican living in the US
and it is not Heaven but neither is any African or Caribbean country for that matter. I've been to Kenya and many people are suffering and some are prospering. There are suffering people in every country. If you have a good job in your home country, stay there and visit the US for vacation.
I agree. No single place is heaven. You can prosper anywhere if you don't mess up
the grass is green where its watered
Yes, every country are suffering but going to another country and you're homeless no better stay at your home country
Good advice sir
No burden is heavy at home.
I really feel sad for those who cannot trust anyone back home to handle business without stealing from them. My sister built an entire apartment block for me and didn't take a penny. She now sends me rental income monthly. I remember when I got stuck with my project, she used her own money to finish it up. I've tried giving her money, paying for vacations and even buying her things but she won't agree to take anything from me. In fact, she's the one who sends me stuff from Kenya. People don't believe me when I say that, they even think she's stealing from me, but everything is accounted for by the agency. I truly thank God for her and all she's done for me over the years
She's a wonderful soul 💓
There are trusted people.
You are one of a kind…blessings
You are only lucky. Thank God for that.

Being homeless in America vs being homeless in kenya
True

Alcohol, drugs, domestic violence could be contributing factors. I hope they rise from this setback, all is not lost.
Thanks Chamwada for a deep look at issues facing our kids here in the US! Yes, alcohol is culprit ONE, not diagnosed mental issues is a key TWO. Bravo to Onyinkwa for refocusing our dreams back to the Mamaland!

Great work from our fellow Kenyans philanthropists. During crisis such ideas is great. But on a larger scale we must start a diaspora fund that’s active within our community and crucial helping hand in times like this.
Failed marriages must be number 1. I do remember when I was kicked out and the police were called. Luckily I was not violent and all I did was pack and leave. When I got a good job in she wanted me back, but I said no. My advice is do not push it.

Life is what you make it. If abroad works for you, nobody should discourage you and not fulfil your life desire and ambitions. If you are smart enough, you should be able to detect and avoid pitfalls that will set you back. Then when you adapt accordingly then its just a matter of time and you will overcome. No situation is permanent if you follow your plan. Also if it doesn't work for you, take the next step and move back. Life must move on and the clock will tick on us all irregardless.

This administration is putting many families in difficult situations. A lot of people are financially struggling to live, put a roof over their head and put food on the table. Things are getting worse these days, if you don't find means of multiplying your money you might wake up a day to realise you didn't plan well for yourself and family…
I agree with you and I believe that the secret to financial stability is having the right investment ideas to enable you earn more money, I don’t know who agrees with me but either way I recommend either real estate and stocks..
I’ve been diligently working, saving and contributing towards early retirement and financial freedom, but since covid outbreak, the economy so far has caused my portfolio to underperform, do I keep contributing to my 401k or look at alternative sectors to meet my goals?

My American dream is still on, even after watching this, I know I got God on my side,
Amen may God grand you your heart desires.
Trust me, these problems are everywhere but, as much as they say “the American dream is just a dream,” there are so many opportunities and possibilities in America. There are many factors that contribute to one ending up on the streets. Something that can happen anywhere. But, like Chams says, there are more success stories than the failures so come with an open mind and be willing to do any jobs. The beauty of being in America is, “the bank manager lines up on his day off without a favor from his coworkers.” What am I trying to say, unless you’re a big celebrity or the president of the US, wote ni kawaida watu. When you come to America, be prepared to be/do anything and make sure you don’t leave people back home feeling like you’re way better than them. In other words, be low key na pride uwache JKIA.
I pray, the lord 🙏 will open doors

There is a guy there who got victimized by undercover police ,case was dismissed but he suffered ptsd, now alcoholic .
There are many factors that lead them to be homeless, lack of proper orientation in a foreign land to understand how the system works is one of the key contributors, another would be lack if proper transition prep from student to working citizens, the issue of greencards and hope for better greener pastures lacks guidance.
Over extending of visit visa and lack of welcome by the fellow country men ....all I'm saying is the factors differ from one individual to another.

Hi Alex When are doing your program in the UK?

DUI is a catalyst to homelessness but is not the end
Unfortunately, this isn't the case for only Kenyans. It's the same for all Immigrants across North America, whether they are from the Continent of Africa or any other country. I think This is mostly the case for black immigrants. This is my opinion.
So many of them in Toronto canada
For those with DUI, and its's your only misdemeanor case you have on file, you can go back to the court and request for an expungement.
If the judge asks you why you need it, tell them you have been applying for jobs and the DUI comes up and they can't hire you.
If they ask which field you have applied, tell them healthcare, since this field is the most scrutinized and they need sober.
When requesting for an expungement note that you have overcome your drinking for if you are arrested again you done.
Note if you are alcoholic in Kenya the same will happen in abroad!
Had to be Florence, always good heart from a Florence

And discrimination
No one MENTIONS SPORT OR HOBBYS.
Some people in USA have 100 acres of land, and others run health care businesses. Its between you and your God. Alcoholism and drugs will only kill you or render one homeless person. Work hard and reap the rewards. Again, it depends on ones background

I've always wondered what Southern Africa (South Africa,Botswana,Namibia ,Lesotho,Zambia etc) are doing right to make sure their people do not suffer in foreign countries .Maybe its time all Africans benchmark from Southern Africa

@@melby6512Botswana and Namibia have small populations. Bots had great politics and economics since independence unlike foundation of tribalism and greed and stealing of Kenya
This is such a stupid comment, Southern Africa is far from perfect. Botswana and Namibia have very small populations with big land size so its population is easy to manage, and a lot of Namibians migrate to UK and suffer. Lesotho people migrate to South Africa. South Africa is also sparsely populated for its size. South Africa inherited good infrastructure from the white settler imperialists so they were better prepared for independence.
