While I'm not surprised people would like this one ... I am pleasantly surprised that you put aside your previous bad Bombay Sapphire experience and appreciated their Original Dry Gin. The Bombay dry gin, though made from a 1761 recipe .... started being distilled and sold in 1959 or 1960. It predates the various Sapphire versions by about 30 years. The Bombay Sapphire came out in the late 80s after the first owner sold out to IDV.

I 100% agree with you regarding the Bombay line of gins. The Original Dry Gin is their best product available and a quite nice gin compared to all the other brands out there. Great review and video!

My uncle always drank a Beefeater gin martini, very dry, up, with a twist. He got me hooked on it. After reviewing this video, I tried a Bombay dry gin martini, very dry, up, with a twist. I like it! Sorry Uncle Don, I changed my gin.

just bought a bottle of this for £17 (1 Litre!), I found it to have a sort of woody aftertaste, it was still prevalent when I tried to hide it somewhat in a Dry Martini and an Aviation, maybe that's why it's £ 17

Old Faithful Classic Bombay is a staple for your bar. Makes a great martini as well as works with many of my favorite gin cocktails. While I love my floral and citrus gin journey, Bombay Original will always have a place in my home bar.

Bobby, it's been a while. Original Bombay Dry is quite a good gin, especially in a Martini. There's an earthiness in it. Still prefer Beefeater, but Bombay is in my top 3!

Bobby, The Bombay Original London Dry launched in 1960, so it's been around quite a while. A dear, departed friend of mine loved Martinis with Bombay Original and Cinzano Vermouth. As a cruel twist of fate, he was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. My friend hadn't had a drop to drink in years.

Bought some today for a try. I liked the nose on it. Some classic gins make me think of leather a bit. Maybe a touch of that new car aroma. Sort of similar to Oriental tobacco mixtures for pipes

  • @JamesWatheist

What do you think it was that throws the Saphhire off? If Saphhire is nearly identical to the original, just with the two additional ingredients, why are they miles apart?
Do you think they are using descent good quality ingredients for original, but one or both of the additional ingredients is of lower quality stock?
Do you think it could be the difference in alcohol content? I'm not a professional distiller but to my knowledge spirits like this come out of the stills at higher proof than the final product, and it's then simply watered down to get to the desired proof. Do you think it could be that the Saphhire and Original come out of the stills with similar tastes, but since the original is more diluted, it masks some of that synthetic chemical notes that we find in Saphhire?

I've liked this gin for years, at the same time absolutely HATING Bombay Sapphire. I stopped ordering it when I'm out because I always have to explain that I DO NOT want Sapphire, and I got sick of explaining the difference between the two (which is huge!). Anyway, Beefeater is better! Thanks for another entertaining video Bobby!

Definitely spot on. It's quite good and sapphire is terrible. Here in the States you don't see it in bars much but not too hard to find it in liquor stores. A little cheaper than tanqueray or sapphire and even beefeater. I use it to round out the selection as I do with broker's. But good luck finding it at a bar!

Bobby, I’ve finished work for the day. I’m enjoying an original Bombay Martini right now! As an American with strong ties to Great Britain, I really love the Bombay story! You may or may not know that Bombay gin was the creation of a New York lawyer Allan Subin, who was married to an Englishwoman. His friends were well to do. They were lovers of gin. Madison Ave. socialites. The original Bombay introduced in 1960, is actually based on Greenall’s 1761 recipe! (I just read this) This is one of my favorites!

  • @maths0714

Also, I'm thinking about it, but this gin (the original bombay) is distilled normally (traditional on the bottle) so it's a different processus than the sapphire whitch is distilled by vapour infusion (that means they put the ingredients inside a huge thing, boil water above that thing and the vapour take the flavours of the ingredients) so maybe it's the processus that give a weird taste, I don't really know, but the point is that this gin is distilled like beefeater, sipsmith and the others ;)

Interesting!! I'll buy it if I see it, but let me tell you something, as you have said many times, most people (me included) had the Bombay Sapphire as their first gin, and if you don't know better, you actually like it, but if I'm being honest, I don't feel that chemical flavor you have mentioned, certainly there a lot of better gins out there but even to this day I find it ok.

(TH-cam loves top 5 lists) Pick your 5 favorite London Drys, label the bottom of 5 identical glasses with a number that you've assigned to the gins, pour equal amounts of each in the corresponding glass, then have someone mix up the order and then have a "blind" gin-off and see which is the winner. 👍

Interesting I always loved the smell of Bombay not so much the taste. I think it was that hit of spice that makes it taste 'harsh'. Both the Cubeb and Grains of Paradise have a peppery taste so maybe removing them has evened it out...I will keep and eye out for this one!
