21:54 - 22:55 is surely THE most stunning passage of romantic choral music. I sung the tenor 2 part (honestly one of the most dramatic and satisfying to sing parts in the work) like 7 years ago or so, when I was young, and I stil remember quite a bit of it. Incredible.
I'm simply blown away that I've never even heard of this piece or its composer. Its affect on me as I am listening is PROFOUND. Thank you so much for posting this great recording by these great performers!
As a self-professed musical nerd, I'd heard of Rheinberger as a respectable, if obscure Liechtensteiner-German romantic composer of refined and beautiful music for organ, orchestra, vocal, and chamber ensembles. And then today, I find that one of his pieces, a Mass in E-flat major, is the source of one of the most famous internet memes, the "Heavenly Choir sound effect"; I don't know how I haven't found this out earlier. On top of that, his Mass Op. 109 is very beautiful. Meaning that the person who first made it into a meme has at one point come across the music of Josef Rheinberger, the obscure and respectable Leichtensteiner-German romantic composer, and almost single-handedly made one of his pieces famous across the internet. Perhaps the creator of the meme is a nerd for classical music as well. That brings a smile on my face :)
I am an Orthodox Christian, and our petty squabbling aside, I genuinely believe this piece of music was written with the Holy Spirit by his side. It is absolutely beautiful, and one of the few pieces of music that got me to tears from genuine awe.
Despite it being very memey music, it's actually very beautiful harmonically. I think it became a meme because it sounded so pleasant and divine. I'm glad I found it.
I used to sing his Stabat Mater in choir, so I've known that Rheinberger's the actual TOP GOAT in sacred music for a long time. Glad to hear my preconceptions verified once more. This is on the same level as Rachmaninov Vespers.
In this mass, Rheinberger surpassed himself: it is so much better than his other mass settings. Really amazing. May I make a suggestion: please give credit to the performers in your video descriptions.
There appears to be an added 6th in the penultimate chord of the Agnus Dei. Written is an Ab minor chord (subdominant minor), but there appears to be an 'F4' in that chord in the recording (I think I prefer it with the added F)
Thank you Signore Stefano... esta es mi misa favorita de entre todas las misas a cappella.. si ya se que existen misas hermosas del renacimiento. w h y does everyone (in first choir altos, and in the Stuttgart recording too) sing an F not an Eb in the penultimate chord?! my printed edition says the same as what’s on screen here! ofc best would be *both* notes but 😅 24:14
@@petergainsford4339error or not, it's still beautiful just like Allegri's Miserere (which also has an error with the top C which wasn't in the original version)

I used to listen to these Rheinberger Masses all the time. It was always hard to imagine anyone not liking the music.
I love it when a composer does that certain descending bass technique at 1:01 while keeping the top note constant

Simply, stunningly beautiful. One of the greatest compositions in history.

I think angelic classical cosmic music. It is beyond our day-to-day realms anyway.
Amen! May Catholic and Orthodox be united in Christ!
There is no squabble when we look not at princes potentates, envies but at Christ our Lord always present In the Sacrifice of the Mass.
that feeling when you finally find the original piece of music: 12:54
That feeling when you finally find the full song
12:54 is what you came for
Exactly the way I got to know this Mass! :D

22:32 love the resolution
The Kyrie really wrings my heart, sang it for the first time in 2016 and it still brings tears to my eyes.
Pre covid choir winnings. I adore this piece of genius ❤

12:54 most heard part of this piece.
There is a Faure-like quality to this piece. Beatiful
Beautifully written/performed piece with a "peaceful" ending (pun intended) :)
I did a report on Rheinberger for my organ lessons. He is a true genius.
Even from this piece alone, truly a genius.
Incidentally, he was a child prodigy of a very high order.
Thank you, it's an amazing mass and being able to see exactly what's going on is so helpful.
I sang this last year and I loved it so much, this video would have helped me to learn my part quicker than just listening to it, I can’t wait 😊
12:54 there it is!!!
Blown away...
1:34 is beautiful

There's a link to the original audio source. I can't write the names, TH-cam sometimes blocks the videos because of the names in the description.

Fantastic!

Ho cercato la suite di Bloch quando mi hai consigliato tutti quei brani per archi... Purtroppo non l'ho trovata :( ma cercherò ancora!

The 1981 Carus-Verlag edition has the 2nd sopranos sing an F there. It looks like it may be an error.

It is a pity that Mr Bruffy so disregards Rheinberger's tempo indications for the Gloria and Credo.
