I think the way the PLC is developed is akin to electrical to a degree. I can't fathom working with a panel that displays something that resembles Christmas tree lights, or a collection of bright colored candies. What was shown wasn't too bad, but I have seen a lot worse. For a technician/controller passing by, it would take them literally several minutes to gauge if there is any immediate issues or alarms. That's the point of greying and simplifying the HMI, a quick glance to your good to go to the next station.
