  • Even a £1 laser diode transmitter needs an optical receiver that, no matter how far apart, can accurately convey information. My design here is a very basic, low bandwidth and one-way communicational system. Yet, in a fine analogue and proportional way, it can reasonably convey, say, motor speed, sound, light or heat level control. However, there's no feedback or error correction. I've tested it largely, over about 10 Metres, and there appears to be no reason why it couldn't reach significant distance - particularly if scaled-up. I have incorrectly stated the gain of my discreet amplifier as 60dbv, it's really about 50dbv - theory isn't practice! Even so, my demonstration hasn't changed - many apologies, I feel an update coming-on. Considering its cheapness, simplicity and very low power, it was surprising to see the beam's abilities. I've enjoyed this project greatly, making a fairground bought red laser - talk.
