    From the real MacBook where you enabled File Sharing you can create a shared folder by adding any folder you want to the Shared Folders option. Then on UTM window select the options button on the top right. Set network mode to "Shared Network" and save. On the UTM window where you see Path/Status/Architecture/Machine/Memory, scroll down to Shared Directory. Select Browse, you will see the file directory of the real MacBook. Navigate to the folder you shared on the real MacBook and select it. When you login to the virtual machine go to the file director to see the devices on the machine. There will be a drive called network drive and it will have the contents of the shared folder. Any file added from the real MacBook to the shared folder or from the VM machine to the network drive will appear in the other machine respectively.

    Enable FTP sharing on the VM. Then you can login from the host. You will be able to transfer files both ways.

    In order to move files in the other direction, you just need to make the same changes on your actual MacBook! Once that is done, open a finder window on the virtual machine and open "networks" from the sidebar. Once there, you should see your physical computer. Click on it, then select "connect as..." and it will request the login credentials of the physical. If the login belongs to an admin account, you will be able to browse and edit your entire file system.

      That's like going back to the stoneage from VM perspective..
      Can't remember the last time i used SMB for networking between mac and VM, as i always used VMWare on Intel.. Since the move to M1, that is now no longer possible, it seems the only winner here in Parallels... if you need both ways. I still think VMWare will fix this up before UTM ever does.

  • @Tech-geeky

    Does drag & Drop work between UTM and Mac and visa vera ?
    I'm so dam sick of Fusion 13 on my M1... You need physical network to move stuff in and out because of half baked drivers.. :P That's the number #1 annoyance right now.. Probably the major one.

      Are you talking about dragging and dropping like from the VM window to the desktop? I'm not sure...

    I've spent the last four hours trying to find a way to copy a file to windows xp (for retro gaming etc) from my mac but absolutely nothing works. Anything that looks like it might work, isn't an option for me, a butting I need to press will be missing or different, or a dropdown menu won't be where it should be. I'm using UTM

    • @thenetworkmystery
      @thenetworkmystery  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I honestly don't know, because I'm not a Windows guy. Have you tried to set up a shared folder, connect via the virtual Ethernet interface in Windows XP, and then copy the files? I'm not quite sure how that works in Windows... I hope someone more familiar will chime in.

    • @RenaissanceEarCandy
      @RenaissanceEarCandy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thenetworkmystery Yes I have but I can't find a way to access it once I'm in XP. I've been searching for five hours now. I might just give in and actually just buy a windows laptop and use windows 11's compatibility mode (which runs most XP software). It'd be a bit expensive but it'd be bloody quicker.

      I've done it between an M2 Macbook Pro running UTM for Windows XP, but I'm not quite sure what was the last missing piece I needed to figure it out. But I can tell you it's possible. @@RenaissanceEarCandy

    • @thenetworkmystery

      Unfortunately I don't know since I have never tested a Windows XP virtual machine. I'd make sure the permissions are set correctly in both the VM and the folder on the real Mac you're trying to copy to/from.

      @@thenetworkmystery I found something that sorta works. Basically, I couldn't find any option to transfer from a Mac to a PC directly with UTM (although Ubuntu would work for some reason). The solution was using a SMB connection between the Mac and the Windows VM. The solution below is meant for two physical computers, but will still work the same.

    • @thenetworkmystery

      Unfortunately, no. BOTH the host and the VM must be on Monterey or higher. I'm not a developer so I don't know the details, but I think Monterey includes virtualization tools that are not present in Big Sur.

      So sorry, I didn’t see this earlier!!
      Try passing through the USB device. You can do that if you go into the VM settings. I think that for some operating systems it requires special tools that you have to install to the VM.
      You should just be able to select the device to pass through and then reboot the VM

      @@thenetworkmystery thanks so much. The only option I see in UTM is USB sharing which is selected. It says “share USB device from host”

    • @thenetworkmystery
      @thenetworkmystery  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s I think what you have to do. However if it’s like a usb hub, it might not work. Maybe I’m not understanding you, but I think if you select a device to use it will work.
