Here, I test how well 8K RED RAW footage plays back on the 5,1 Mac Pro. I would say it's not great, but it works. And yes, I would also say that this machine is absolutely usable in 2023, which proves just how long Macs can last!

It worked fine, except for the high fan speed. But yeah, aside from that, it was totally usable!

Would be great to see a power drawl with your setup. Also you stould try Ubuntu instead of Windows once 10 is EOL.
I am running Windows 11, which will be supported for many more years.
I'm still using my HP Z400 (since 2010) with 4 displays. In 2010 it was half the price of a MacPro for the same hardware config. Of course a lot of update since (nvme drive, 10G network, USB3, GPU). When I bought it I never thought that I will be able to update it for so long. Writing a file at more than 700MB/s on a locale disk or to a server was not possible for normal people... I'm thinking of bying another one for parts but in 14 years the only thing that broke was 1 SAS HDD and the power button cap: I have to push the power button directly...

Right, the lack of DDR4 support is a bit of an issue, but otherwise, the workstation works perfectly!
The instructions for memory population are on the underneath of the top plate on my server, maybe your one is different. High fan speed without doing updates and third party fixes is due to non dell components
I knew the non-Dell components were the reason for the high fan speed. I guess I did not see full instructions for memory installation on the top plate.

If you stick with windows 10 below 20H4, and use an E5-1650/80 v2 you can overclock it to run at 4Ghz all core, also, they work with regular RDIMMs, not use unbuffered ECC and will take up to 128GB of 1866Mhz ram. I ran mine with a titan X pascal for a while, and it did pretty well in 1440p gaming.
I thought Xeons weren't capable of overclocking... This would be an interesting experiment, except that Windows 10 is out-of-date, even moreso that particular build.
@@thenetworkmystery the first, second and 3rd gen E5 single socket CPUs had their multipliers unintentionally had their multipliers left unlocked, unfortunately intel realised their mistake by the time they got to the 4th gen. And yes, it is unfortunate that later versions of windows stopped intel XTU from recognising the unlocked xeons.

You can buy them used on marketplaces like eBay.
Purchased our, off lease, HP Z420 (Xeon 1630) on eBay for $350 5 yrs ago.. Added a Samsung 950 Pro NVME (512 Gb, $316) which had a bootable BIOS that was recommended on the HP user forum website, and a recommended 3X, 4 lane, PCIE adapter card from Amaz-n ($20). Installed Win10 to the NVME and subordinated the original 250 Gb, 2.5 ” HP drive as backup. This configuration was exceptionally stable (no reboots for months, I thought it was the Xeon/ ECC combination until last year, while scrolling through web pages in Chrome, the fonts displayed started to corrupt! Purchased a Quadro P1000 ($ 100) to replace the original Quadro 2000, and upgraded the memory from singled, dual channeled ECC memory to dual sided ECC (32 Gb) of Kingston, quad channel memory, problem solved. Unfortunately, the HP Z 420 does not support TPM 2.0, no mWindows 11. It will have to be retired to a trusted NAS. Like you, I purchased a HP branded LSI 9217-4i4E PCIE x8 SAS card which the Z420 easily accommodated an installation of Proxmox which gave me the ability to run multiple VM’s and containers, the power and stability of the Z420 is an excellent value to act as a local cloud server.
I was able to get around the TPM 2.0 limitation via some well-known hacks. I'd imagine it does run well for virtual machines and such (with a good CPU, of course)!

I have recycled the machine, as I had no use for it, and it obviously didn't run modern macOS well. Your comments are appreciated as always, but I won't be able to implement any fixes you might suggest.

I have bought a lsi 9270 cv 8i from ebay for my z420 to use 3 , 4 tb sas drives I have lying around since this editing pc is running short of hd space and that didn't work for me, now thinking of buying 9260 8i since there are no working videos of the lsi cards on yt other than yours. Anything you have changed in bios or is it default?
I thought the 9260 wouldn't work... I was almost 100% certain it wouldn't. Because I had the same issue as you--there are NO VIDEOS on YT about it!! But when I connected it, it just showed up in the Mini-OROM display. All I had to do was enter the BIOS of the controller using whatever key command it is (can't remember at the moment). I will say, it took a bit of fiddling around to get it in the configuration I wanted (that BIOS is NOT user-friendly at all!), but I got it running, nonetheless!

Does it run what in 4K? It cannot run games in 4K, but it can edit 4K videos and drive a 4K monitor.
@@thenetworkmystery It actually kinda does handle AAA games at 4k, assuming you're using the top line cpu of the socket. Preferably with a top line AMD gpu too, that is. the large cache and difference in cpu instruction give them advantage to last so long.
Well...Thank You, Friend! I was almost ready to purchase this unit! I bought the Roland VS 880...In the 90's and found it a bit complicated at first. But I got the hang of it relatively quickly! (I actually upgraded to the VS1680 and Finally their 24 track VS)! I don't believe that Any of those Units Were As Complicated as what you're explaining in this video! I don't have the space for a Large Recorder or a DAW! BUT...I'm definitely crossing this TASCAM Off my list! 🙏
I am having a bit of trouble understanding this comment. I think from a DAW-centric perspective, the VS is an incredibly complicated system. Hardware devices like the VS are always going to be complicated for those used to using a DAW. It's just an obscure piece of gear, with very complicated steps to, for example, do automation. I don't remember my VS very well anymore, because it's been gone several years now. I will say, it was great while I had it, because I didn't have a very powerful computer at the time (a 2010 iMac). The VS models you mentioned are also older; the VS-2000CD was one of the last ones released, in 2001 I believe. The 880 and 1680 were released several years prior, in the mid-to-late 1990s.
@@thenetworkmysteryYour video and other videos about the TASCAM made the TASCAM seem much more complicated than the Roland VS RECORDERS. ALSO I absolutely HAVE TO Be Able to do PUNCH INS Via a pedal!! If this unit doesn't have that option...I can't use it. I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it if you are familiar with other 8 track, easy to learn (It's been almost 25 years since I've recorded) with a punch in/out pedal jack. I have two of these, and am very happy except with the PSUs that seem to struggle with and decent graphics cards.
I threw in my spare 1650 Super, and while it's a decent card, it's certainly nothing to write home about.
Dude! Ya hafta configure the firmware to use the extra video card as the default instead of the built-in video card, but here's the kicker, not all firmware manufacturers provide that feature! PC bucket firmware sucks frozen dead bunnies through a bent straw sideways while skydiving!

Dude! Servers control fans with the FIRMWARE, not with any kind of software! IPMI will only sometimes expose the fans' rotational speed, but whether all the fans are visible in IPMI depends on whether the firmware manufacturer exposed all the hardware in a standards compliant way! ONE CAN NOT RELIABLY CONTROL FAN SPEED IN A SERVER WITH GENERIC DESKTOP SOFTWARE; those applications are extremely OS-specific and hardcore proprietary, and totally dependent on hardware manufacturer's compliance with ACPI and IPMI standards! If the hardware manufacturer's implementation deviates from the standards in any way, you're toast!

Dude! To have a workstation, you need UNIX, like one of the illumos distributions; if you run Windows on it, it's just another very loud PC bucket! And ya hafta put in liquid cooling, because otherwise it's way too loud to be able to concentrate...

Technically you can use server for workstation (only Storageserver are a little different). But the noise will be not be good in a office to work

I have an HP Z440 to. Excellent PC.
Low profile graphics card preferred Quadro 2000 ish or FirePro v5800 and similar without 6pin GPU power, preferably with passive heatsink ( will be cooled by those 'turbojet' fans too efficiently) and gaming cards are not suited due to fan cooling and 2-3slots size, also 6 or 8 pin power requirements, server PSU don't have them even power wise are okay...
That makes sense.
If you’re still on Sonoma (or any of the newer macOS’s), disable the AMD GPU in the OpenCore settings. You will have to reinstall OpenCore but you should get graphics acceleration with the Intel graphics. Hope this helps.
I tried that off-camera, and it did nothing--there was still no acceleration. So I honestly have no idea. I just went and recycled that machine yesterday, because it was basically unusable, and there was no point in keeping it around if OCLP doesn't work.

DDR4 is the one thing I'm missing from this machine. But I also don't really care too much, because I wanted to put all my spare DDR3-ECC RAM to use!

Great video, thanks! So to create a Bootable installed for an old Mac (2012 Mac Mini), using my M1 Mac Mini, I should use the 'Package' option? I am not sure if I'd need the ISO image though to create a USB bootable installer for the old Mac?
There are two ways to approach this: You could download just the .app file (leave every setting at its default). It'll give you a warning saying, "This installer is incompatible," but it will let you download it anyway. Then, you'll be able to use the createinstallmedia command in Terminal to create the bootable drive. Or, you could select the icon to the right (the hard drive icon) to let Mist create the bootable installer. It will give you the same warning, but proceed anyway, and it will copy the installer to your USB drive and make it bootable!

There are some scripts or docker containers to control the speed according with the temperature. You can get it from idrac or you can link with a sensor via home assistant. Poweredges are notorious to crank up the speed when detects non dell pcie peripherals, specially graphic cards
I also have never gotten the iDRAC to work in this system. If I could, I would definitely try the scripts.

Curious what your TDP avg is under load. Z210s are pretty cheap right now and the specs are good for price
@@LuccianoNova For the CPU? It is a Xenon equivalent to a 3rd gen i7. It is ok but not good for transcoding or heavy video games . It decodes h264 videos fine but you need a newer GPU to decode some h265 smoothly. The drives are attached super jank, with cheap sata power splitters and a HBA card. It is a cheap way to get 14TB with random old drives. But the drives sometimes have a bad connection, happens maybe once a month and the just need to be reconnected.
I was early 12 or 13 weeks at the end of the 70s. And that was a close call technologically then. I am happy that we came that far to keep more newborns alive when they arrive so early. Thank you for finding the courage to do this video. And thank you for sharing.

I tried using Sonoma via OCLP on my 2012 MacBook Pro & it was real buggy. I then removed it & downloaded Monterey via OCLP & it works much, much better
Even Big Sur doesn't run well on this computer. I think it's just the hardware, coupled with the failing graphics card. I'm sure if I tried it on a non-2011 MBP it'd work fine.
Did you use the latest open core legacy version. I also was having major problems with the previous version , however when I tried the latest version , it correctly made a working usb installer and the patches also worked ok. I think they knew past versions were giving alot of people big problems.

Why didn't you install from the USB and when it says install root patches a second time, just do it. No problem on mine..
I didn't install from USB because the "in-place" method has worked for me previously (on other machines). Also, I think I did install the root patches when it asked.

I have Sonoma on my mbp early 2011 13" and it's working perfectly! You just might need upgrade on your SSD and memory sticks...
Obviously the hard drive is an issue, but I don't think that should make it this unusable... it's almost as if the root patches completely don't work.
If you installed while connected to wifi, try connecting with an ethernet cable and run the root patches again. I think its missing the KDK. You can check under Library/Developer/KDK - there should be a 14.5 KDK folder.
I saw it download the KDK, but I'll have to try this again.
I tried this months ago… Sonoma installed perfectly , except for Bluetooth driver compatibility. Performance was usable but less than stellar (laggy animations, a bit of overheating. I recently tried Ventura, and it runs a lot better.

Not to be “that guy” but Windows 10 can run without issues in 13-year-old laptops without having to install it unofficially. And no, I’m not an Apple hater, I have an M3 Air, a 2011 MBP, an 8th Gen iPad, an iPhone 13 mini, an iPhone SE and an iPhone 5, all of which I regularly use. But I’m tired of people flaunting how long apple supports their gear, while you can install supported windows in really old machines, no fuss

It’s not letting me install, it fails. utm is creating this drive that’s 20 kb that isn’t visible in the editing menu. It only appears in the summary between the Ram and 64gb Drive .
