Boy, she took that rebuke like a champ - I'd have been in an emotional puddle on the floor. I love the gentle hand touch as he let her down - he was always so tender and attentive to her, so aware of her feelings. He saw her humility and sought to guard her heart through the rejection. What a man.
When the Australian province of Victoria was named after her, she picked the capital to be named after him..... for a reason. It's a shame he's never visited Melbourne though 😔
What a beautiful scene. Lord Melbourne is such an intriguing and tragic sort of character and they couldn't have found a better person to play his part than Rufus Sewell (hes a wonderful, but underestimated actor). And to whoever came up with the lighting behind them....omg....genius.
Elliebet So much this. I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one that really felt the gravity and atmosphere here. Just the soft, warmly lit sky is prefect. Actually, in my opinion, I think this sort of thing is what draws people into the Period Piece genre. It's real life situations that actually happen and sometimes you get lucky and it'll be like a scene straight out of these types of movies. And agreed, he is very underestimated as an actor. I like him in this role especially because he ALWAYS plays the bad guy. Which he is great at, but the juxtaposition in the role really displays his talent as an actor. He has great range.
Actually, the first role I have ever seen him was a good guy - Thomas Clarkson in Amazing Grace. And then I saw him as the pastor in Parade's End, who was not a bad guy, either. Just a bit... off the trolley. :D
Yes this actor was superb, fabulous in this role, for all the horrible people in movies, he makes this role smart, romantic, manly and very dignified, you hardly see this anymore in movies, gosh they didnt even have sex
My favorite role of his is in Dangerous Beauty. If you want to watch a film where you fall in love with him, watch that. It’s the first thing I ever saw him in and I’ve loved him as an actor ever since.
a beautiful scene pulled straight out of some writer's a**. As if we didn't have enough bloody movies or shows about Queen Victoria, I can think of many kings & queens of England &/or Scotland who could have a show about them, or even some of the continental European monarchies - Queen Victoria Eugenia "Ena" of Spain comes to mind (incidentally, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria). She had an amazing life - she saw all of the upheaval of the 20th century....she survived the Spanish revolution, several of her sons were hemophiliacs which caused her husband to grow cold to her (the opposite of Tsar Nichaols III's treatment of Alexandra, who was Ena's 1st cousin) , she had to carry a dead infant to term for fear that any inducement might destroy her abilities to have any more children. It was bad enough when Prince Albert got shot in "Young Victoria" (something that never happened), but now we have her in this series in some forbidden love BS with Melbourne?. Its seems that movies/TV show makers are beginning to treat V's private life similar to how they have dealt with Elizabeth I's, with everything being about doomed or unrequited love. SPARE ME.
mysterychemistry There are many writers & directors who dont know or understand much when it comes to royalty, especially American ones, or they have a very "Disneyland"/Video Game/Soap Opera view of any of it. Game of Thrones comes to mind, as well as that Kirsten Dunst Marie Antoinette movie, which ended right when her life was just getting interesting, & made the absurd parallels between an 18th century queen consort of France & an absurd modern-day hotel heiress named Paris Hilton. The scenes of people addressing her as "Your Majesty" long before she became queen are a case-in-point. Regarding this QV/LM claptrap, there is every need to be harsh...I am aware it isnt a documentary but that doesnt mean it has to be a complete fantasy. The very notion that there was some affair, or almost an affair, between these two is ridiculous, & even when Melbourne is portrayed in any movie or show of relatively recent vintage he is made to look at least 30 years younger so that the audience will come up with some suspicion of an affair. It took long enough but now they have finally made the show they had wanted to all along, since the film industry has already milked Elizabeth I's alleged love life for all its worth. Thank you, but I dont need lessons in royal marriages, to say nothing of a royal personage of the early-to-mid 19th century who happens to be queen regnant of the UK allegedly having/almost having an affair with her Prime Minister, from you.
mysterychemistry oh dear - I typed up my comment this morning but I didn't read it till now. Sorry for being so bitchy! EEK! :) I am all for imagination, I just really detest it in this context. A show about QV & her relationships with her children would certainly lead to new examination. Even better would be a show dealing with her 5 granddaughters who became Queen &/or Empress consorts of various kingdoms/empires.
It is remarked by several period sources that QV and "Lord M" were very close and probably smitten in some way with each other. There are some that found this scandalous and some found it enchanting. Lord Melbourne seems to have maintained his gentlemanly demeanor with Victoria throughout and Victoria, being young and inexperienced, didn't quite understand her own feelings. In the end she ended up leaving this behind for Albert. And Melbourne in his final years appears to have felt broken and abandoned. After reading some of her letters where she describes Melbourne's appearance as "beautiful", I can imagine this scene could have happened.
It would been scandal he was only caring for her as she was a lot people around she was not getting the right kind of love she was to be married to the prince was arranged.
Love the way he holds her hands. Beautiful but heartbreaking scene. He loved her so much you could tell but he was so honorable and selfless. So heartbreaking. You can almost touch the astounding chemistry between them. Sod history. I don't care about history. Let them have their happy ending
@Lala lalala They have chemistry, even the creator of the show said she loves their scenes together. And it has nothing to do that they date in real life. Kit and Rose from Game of Thrones are a couple in real life and for me they had 0 chemistry in their scenes on GOT
I think he had affection for her, but he was in love with his wife. I can see why Victoria loved him, but I don't see why Melbourne would love Victoria. She's pretty and headstrong, but she's not as seasoned as it would take for a woman to interest Melbourne. Plus he probably saw no future given the 20 year age gap. I think she was a lonely woman who mistook his kindness and affection for something more.
yankeeangel26 right 😂 I can’t be mad at this inaccurate portrayal. I loved this little romance, I loved the musical them that played for them. It made the show for me. Made me almost sad it wasn’t true lol.

I so agree. I actually found a fan fiction on line with the both of them that pretty much broke me in two. It was totally sexy and written perfectly. I could totally imagine them together.
A testament to the acting (and writing), knowing the history as well as I do [history is a great and terrible hobby] and loving the Victoria/Albert love story [thanks more to YOUNG VICTORIA], I was still on the edge of my seat hoping they'd throw the history book out the window, and let Melbourne find happiness with his favorite Queen. Yet I knew, I KNEW, that he would turn her down. (I didn't even see the previous episodes, I came in on this episode.) I knew he would pick the duty they each had to their country, over his heart or hers. Darnnit PBS!
Rufus Sewell is one FABULOUS actor, I hate they didn't keep him on longer Rufus (imho) made the show, for this scene alone he should have won a Bafta.😚
Well i didn't think history could be so heartbreaking until they gave us these two :( I tried so hard not to ship these two as i knew it would break my heart and it did with this episode. I know history can't be re-written in this show but i would love to see Jenna and Rufus in something else one day.
His rejection to her was the right call. I have no doubt he was developing feelings for her, but he quickly recognized that her own feelings for him, while genuine and heartwarming, was for the wrong reasons. Victoria grew up without a father figure, kept away from social interactions with others (particularly boys of her age), and masculinity was hardly expressed as a positivity in her early years. Melbourne was the first man to see and support her potential as a monarch and more importantly, as an individual woman in her own right whereas everyone else smothered, belittled, and treated her as nothing more than a figurehead. Because of that Victoria saw him as the father, mentor, and companion she never had. But she immediately mistakes it as also a romantic love because in her eyes, he's the first man to have ever pay attention to her and therefore that's true love. She's very young and desperate to find love just to fill the void she's had her entire life. Very sweet, but sadly, her viewpoint is rather naive, narrowed, and a little childish. It was very important for her to grow out of her sheltered knowledge of what she thinks she knows about men and the concept of love in general. Melbourne's rejection, while sad and disappointing, was a lesson Victoria needed to learn and it became a gateway to both expand her worldview and personality as an adult. This gateway eventually lead her to Albert, who ultimately became her great love and this time for the right reasons.
You summarised Victoria and Lord M's dynamic perfectly. I find it disturbing that a number of people are cheering on for Victoria & Lord M to be a couple because that's just too weird. Lord M is at least 20 years older than Victoria. Victoria was still a child and had never interacted with anyone outside the palace, so it's natural that she developed romantic feelings for Lord M which in fact were just her delusions. She thought she knew what love was but it was just a mere crush. Hate how the writer set some romantic undertones between them. I'm glad that after Albert showed up, Victoria was all about Albert and Albert only.
@@HeySay3 I think it was perfect. It helps us to feel what she feels, see things how she sees them. When you're young and caught up in a crush it feels like the most sincere and heartfelt of romances, and it was devastating when he turned her down, just like she felt.
This is heartbreaking. They adore each other. Lord M clearly loves her - even jealous in the next episode. Rufus was brilliant. I've never been so angry at a show that they can't be together. Dammit screw history as they must be together. I don't care about historical fact as long as Lord M can have his Queen
Beautiful scene - the dialogue, the pacing , the scenery, and the actors - amazing. Rufus S is great, of course, but Jenna M is so good! Here she is the vulnerable teenager, but still a queen. Her facial expressions are heartbreaking, a masterclass in acting!
How beautiful. So honest. Pure. Dignified If only she realized how strong she is for relaying her feelings beautifully, facing rejection, and walking away with her dignity in tact because she took rejection so gracefully. This man was honest and knew the right thing to do for both of them. How I wish men these days would act in all temptations.
The interviews which came with the release of the series on DVD actually detailed that the lighting was not intentional - the sun rose on that take by coincidence, but they agreed it so captured the essence of the scene that they just had to put it in.

1999 I fell in love with Rufus Sewell in Dangerous Beauty - what a wonderfully versatile actor - look forward to any role he tackles - including Lord Melbourne
Pretty sure I got the biggest crush on Rufus Sewell now because he does such a terrific job as Lord Melbourne! And to this day, I still ship Victoria and Melbourne together
I know this scene maybe anywhere from exaggerated to complete fiction but it was really written and acted so perfectly. And it is nice to see Sewell play a role like this
such a serene scene, the wind gently swaying her veil , his soothing voice letting her down gently ..........and the wonderfully tragic music. this was the peak of the series
Just a beautiful scene well acted. I love how It was filmed outside l thought it was a perfect spot, you can truly just feel the emotions of the scene. My eyes always water when l see this scene.
Such a beautiful scene full of honesty from both sides trying not to hurt themselves with their answers...sadly for both of them who love and respect each other deeply....❤️...doing the right thing may hurt sometimes....🙏🏽

This is just beautifully acted....they could bring Lord M back in Season 2. He was still her PM for a while longer. Wouldn't it be great just to see the two of them interact. To suggest they go any further now that she is married would be an affront to telling her story...much as I hate it; but they could have them interact. That's my hope at least.
To all of those who wonder painfully why there was no embrace, no kiss:. First, Victoria was young and quite hot. Second, Lord M knew if he jumped her royal bones, he was headed for arrest and the gallows. It was and still is let a BIG offense to touch a monarch. We in the states await season 2 , we'll see what happens to this royal angst.
Damn it, a time when civilized men could say no. Most slag's nowadays would ignore decency and throw themselves in bed with the first woman who flutters her eye lashes
Clara Oswald traveled to the Victorian age, falling in love with Obergruppenführer John Smith who miss calculated the portal's readings and end up in the wrong parallel universe
He loved her but he was older than her, he was not able to get a marriage with the queen of England. Victoria knew and accepted that with the time. He did it by love.
In 1967, Billy Joe Royal had a hit record with the song, “The Greatest Love” that fits Lord M. The end of the song is, “But I just want you to know. It's not easy. Heaven knows, I tried - to wish the best for you. Pushed myself aside. It takes the greatest love that you'll ever find, to let you walk away, leaving me behind. And that's the greatest love.”
You expect a kiss, but lord Melbourne knows she is young and respect her feelings.
Less is More, so beautiful.
So romantic in a bittersweet way

''I believe when you give your heart it will be without hesitation........but you cannot give it to me''.
''I think you have it already''
:'(
When you already know she will marry someone else, but every inch of you ship them like hell...😍
This man makes my knees weak!
Pretty sure I got the biggest crush on Rufus Sewell now because he does such a terrific job as Lord Melbourne! And to this day, I still ship Victoria and Melbourne together
Me too. Lol
Height of love. Love doesn't mean that you should get your beloved at any cost. Getting happiness for your beloved is the true love
I know this scene maybe anywhere from exaggerated to complete fiction but it was really written and acted so perfectly. And it is nice to see Sewell play a role like this
such a serene scene, the wind gently swaying her veil , his soothing voice letting her down gently ..........and the wonderfully tragic music. this was the peak of the series
such a beautiful scene and dialogue.
Just a beautiful scene well acted. I love how It was filmed outside l thought it was a perfect spot, you can truly just feel the emotions of the scene. My eyes always water when l see this scene.
:( thats the thing with period dramas. The ship was doomed from the start... :(
The feels. This truly breaks my heart.
love the wind in this scene
Such a beautiful scene full of honesty from both sides trying not to hurt themselves with their answers...sadly for both of them who love and respect each other deeply....❤️...doing the right thing may hurt sometimes....🙏🏽
It sure does.
Pure selflessness on his part. Pure.
One of the most heart breaking scenes in the season.
Jenna Coleman is the luckiest friggin' woman on this planet.
Gosh this broke my heart. I’d probably have fallen for him too because of the kind of man he is. 😭😭😭
Me too.
My heart breaks every time I watch this. 💔💔💔💔
Me : * had a crush on rufus sewell *
Me : * checking his age in google and found out he's 52 yrs old *
Also Me : * realized I'm just 18 *
My fangirling ass : doesn't matter he just 34 YeArS oLdEr ThAn mE
XD Iconic
Lol, well I'm 40 his only 12 years older than me
It is poignantly sublime to surrender a deep desire for the sake of doing what is right.
I couldn’t continue the show after they said goodbye. I love Rufus! ❤️❤️❤️
Me too .
This broke my heart:'(
This actor should have played the role of Albert so that we would have more of him on our screens.
The way "M" told her was classic. You will never forgot the scene. He acted beautifully.
Oh Vicky. Boy, do I feel your pain. Rufus sure did make it impossible NOT to fall for Lord M.
I fell for lord M.
Lord Melbourne knows that he can't be the husband of the queen while he is prime mister and he is her private Secretary after all, he knows it is duty
Is it just me or did they seem to have more chemistry and natural (and genuine) soul intimacy than later Victoria had with Albert?
they had so much chemistry whereas victoria and albert had zero chemistry
This story's so beautiful!
1:48 he is so sweet....😭😭😭
The actor Rufus Sewell who plays Lord Melbourne looks like Abe Lincoln in a good way
yes! documentary anyone?
To all of those who wonder painfully why there was no embrace, no kiss:. First, Victoria was young and quite hot. Second, Lord M knew if he jumped her royal bones, he was headed for arrest and the gallows. It was and still is let a BIG offense to touch a monarch. We in the states await season 2 , we'll see what happens to this royal angst.
The best Beautiful story I like so much Thank you
3:06 Hm. What a moment. Also, what an exit! SO heavy.
This scene tore me up. I was ugly crying on behalf of Victoria.
Nooooooooo Victoria and obergruppenführer belong together
Arnold Schwarzenegger LOL 😂 oh yea this guy also plays a bad dude from the show man in high castle.
This guy knows!
Arnold Schwarzenegger OMFG HONESTLY
This is the best comment out of them all hahaha
😂😂😂😂😂
“Brockett hall is honored mum” 🎩👌🏼
Victoria and Albert are great, but i want a parallel universe where these two would get together. Their seperation breaks my heart 💔
Jenna Colman is such a great actress!! Rufus S is great too!! LOVE the show!!
Take me away lord Melbourne
It's so hard to see him wanting to say yes. But he knew that it wasn't the right thing to do...
He loved her but he was older than her, he was not able to get a marriage with the queen of England. Victoria knew and accepted that with the time. He did it by love.
This and Aragorn's rejection of Eowyn are the two kindest and heartfelt rejections on screen
I've come incognito of course
*wears black see thru veil*
In 1967, Billy Joe Royal had a hit record with the song, “The Greatest Love” that fits Lord M. The end of the song is, “But I just want you to know. It's not easy. Heaven knows, I tried - to wish the best for you. Pushed myself aside. It takes the greatest love that you'll ever find, to let you walk away, leaving me behind. And that's the greatest love.”
