  • The North Brothers are famous for making the Yankee line of screwdrivers. But they made a line of drills of the same quality. The 1530A was one of the most popular. It does things that other drills won’t even dream of.
    I stopped by The Heritage Company a couple days ago because you have to keep checking to see what is new. Antique shops and flea markets are one off places. If they have it right now you can buy it or the next guy might. In the case of the North Brothers Yankee 1530A X drill the chances are pretty good it won’t last long.
    Chris Schwarz wrote an article about it. After I read it I have been on the look out for one. My wait was longer than 18 weeks, but my price is much better. www.popularwoodworking.com/wo...
    Just a few fixes and I have a great little user drill.

    What cool little drill seen ratchet ones before but only forward and reverse they were great for going in corners and places you can't get a full turn but never any with that many positions. When I load the file I give it a tap on the bench to remove excess chalk stops it going over the work your on, also didn't realise till you just did it stops the squeak so must lube it as well ? This practice has been done for hundreds of years,I was shown fifty or more years ago and never new it stopped the noise You learn something new every day nice drill can't wait to see it cleaned and feckled up .thanks unc good vid 👍

      After I read your message about the French Chalk I was fascinated by the idea. I had tried regular chalk and it was a little better than without it but not a lot. The soapstone works much better. Thanks Dave.
      It is slightly slippery so that might be the reason for the squeak stopping. I also shortened the length of the test piece. Lots less vibration.

      You're good! ADMIT IT!! Where I used to live there were talc mines all over. The parent company bought Nantahala Talc and Limestone and re-did the whole thing. It was started in the 1800's I think. You can Google it and look around. I always tap the round file between teeth when filing a saw too. Gets the filings out. Got my flat file in plastic wrap. We'll see how that does with keeping rust out. Speaking of out, out I go!

    Old time machinists would keep a stick of chalk in the cabinet for filing brass, copper and aluminium. They would keep a separate file for soft metals and rub the chalk stick on it first.

      UK Tony One of those hand filing tricks that make all the difference. Brass is soft. Dull files tear and damage the surface.
      Once a file has been used on steel it is dull enough to not cut brass well.
      New files were broken in on brass and after some use dulled them a bit they would me moved over to filing steel.

    I recognized the drill ratchet before you said what it was. Nice rig and my chucks need a snort too. It was mow or blow this morning. 3 big wheelborrow loads of chips for the garden and then try to mow. Ground is ROTTEN but with all the high grass it'll never dry out. The Kawasnapper would just do 1/2 width without clogging in 1st gear. Got hot and vapor-locked so got the Roof and finished with nary a hitch, THEN bagged the clippings. That's the way it'll be done from now on. I ended up going over some of it 3 and 4 times. No more of that silliness. 2ice at the most and the best 2 U on the tire. 80 outside and HOT but out I go to make 'cars' for next Nana day which is tomorrow. Back after a while I hope.

      Lewie McNeely It's still raining today so I'l be mowing tomorrow.
      Hopefully not as much as you did.

      BLESS YOU, Uncle. I think I'm about caught up so I might finish up with the Gravely. It has the long snoot for getting under the bushes. Cheryl ruined n old pair of shoes when she sunk in the mire as Jim Morrison said. No bottom in places but with the grass gone and opened to the sun, maybe it'll dry out a little. Thought it was going to shower but it didn't Happy is we! Hope the fix-a-flat holds. It does good in my stuff but tubes work better. You'll find a good tire store or maybe an honest small engine place.

      Lewie McNeely in small plant tyres ive seen silver sand used they fill the tyre through the valve hole with a form of sand blaster at low pressure . The sand is so dry and fine it flows like water . Just a thought sure you've seen it lewie it's used on JCB tyres and rollers

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That'd work fine but I haven't seen it though. They use anti-freeze and water here. Used to use sodium chloride but it'd rust the rims out in no time.

    • @davidchadwick1626
      @davidchadwick1626 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lewie McNeely water and antifreeze same here manly on rollers for extra wait and big plant it's cheaper than sand . I'll have to ask my youngest he severed his time on small plant see what he suggests. There maybe something that's a good fix that's available on both sides of the pond . The stuff that's available these days is amazing

    Can’t tell if your new find has a compartment in the handle to store drill bits. I have Stanley that does.

    • @OldSneelock

      David Cundiff Just got a note from Karen O with a catalog entry. I went and checked. It does but different than I expected.
      The whole handle comes off and there are several drill bits inside it.

    I have one of the later Stanley versions of the 1530 that has the redesigned Stanley chuck on it that makes that whole drill completely useless as a tool!
    The barrel transmission on that is designed to use that tool in both directions under torque. But that stupidly redesigned chuck defeats the purpose of that. Whenever I try to take a screw out with it the chuck opens up and the bits fall out unless I get it real tight with pliers. That's why I hate this piece of garbage!
    The original manufacturer designed it so that even if the chuck was not real tight it would still not open up when you try to use it in reverse just like the bigger version the 1545 that I have.
    Originally they both had a chuck that was not affected by reverse torque because of a protrusion on the end of the main shaft that goes into the chuck that looks like a giant screwdriver tip and it went into a slot inside the chuck that locked them together rotationally and impervious to reverse or forward torque as far as tightness on the bit.
    I keep hex adapters in my hand drills at all times I use them mostly for screws and bolts.
    If you have a 1545 or 1530 or a similar tool you can check it to see if yours has that added feature by holding on to the chuck and turning the main crank and see if the Jaws in the chuck goes straight in and out or if they spin around as they go in and out. If the jaw spin around while you turn the crank then you have the better version that is highly sought after.
    I am not at all surprised that Stanley has taken tools from companies that they acquired and downgraded the quality of the tools and made them useless. They did the same thing with the Yankees screwdrivers by not adapting them to the modern hex bits arrangement like everything else.
    A respected German company has picked up the production of the Yankee screwdrivers. But they have adapted them to the modern hex drive bits. You can probably find them online.
    That company also reproduces the early design of the push drills.

      I forgot to mention that the Yankee screwdrivers only takes their own proprietary bits and do not take the hex drive bits. But a company called LeeValley.com does make an adapter for those that fit right into the Yankee screwdrivers and has the hex bit adapter built into it and they make them in three different sizes for the Yankee screwdrivers.

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen ads for the adapters. 😁😎
      I tend to use the power drivers I have for most things. Wrists aren't up to a lot of twisting anymore.

      @@OldSneelock I wish I could cut this garbage chuck off and put a good one on like my 1545 has.
      This cheap chuck is permanently attached on a swivel on my drill. I can't even take it off.
      I need to find a way to lock the jaws of the chuck permanently to the main shaft of the drill.
      Does your chuck come off easily?
