The North Brothers 1545, and possibly similar models, also has another hidden secret. It has a hidden secret screwdriver to tighten the other screws on the tool.
To find it remove the side handle and it's at the end of the threaded shaft.
    Surprise! 😁
I read about that and made mine to match it.

A lot of the old hand drills had storage in the handle. All four of mine do.

Pretty neat drill. The drill bits in the handle sure was a surprise. Judging by the amount of those drills in the background, I would say you have to be the resident expert on those drills. I have just one but rarely use it. Thanks for showing what was going on inside that drill....Ken Marina CA.

Kenneth Bartlett Battery operated drills and drivers are handy. They opened up the market for hand drills. They can be picked up for little money. With good sharp bits and a little practice the braces and egg beaters can do as well or better and the power source is self sustaining.

The ratchet mechanism is brilliant. Is it possible to free up a ratchet on a screwdriver or is it fit only for opening paint tins ?.

UK Tony I think you can disassemble one but not sure how. If it is only a can opener you don't have much to lose.

David Chadwick I looked at the handle and expected the regular screw on cap on the end. 1st one I've seen like this.

@@OldSneelock the North Brothers 1545 and similar models also have it that way.
Check out the North Brothers manufacturing catalog online.
I wish I could post pictures from it.

7:45 and all's well and I've been in the saddle(s) again, re-doing the road and it's done and I am too. The old JCB didn't overheat at all so I believe somebody else was just running it too hard. You can't get but so much oil through a 1/2 inch line. I also got the other neighbor/builder 3K series Deere with a loader and a box blade.Way too fancy for me but it was a dandy. 150 hours on it, hydrostatic drive, weighs about 4k pounds. NICE! So here I am admiring your drill. Karen did GOOD! Cheryl got kitchen paint so I know what she's doing. I am hydrating myself. About 84 out but the humidity wasn't bad but no cab on the Deere and not much on the JCB but I have a nice red head that'll be brown tomorrow. Pressure washing on the docket. See if I can knock some milds and moldews off stuff. Nice drill, by the way!

Lewie McNeely Thanks Lewie.Glad you were able to get done with the road. I wear a hat with a brim if I'm out in the sun. Burned my ears bad about 20 years ago. Scraping and painting the old workshop. Shorter hair cut than I had for about 30 years.
Now I have a similar problem on top. My friend Bob ended up with skin cancer on top of his head after a few years of golfing bald.

I've got a big old floppy straw hat I should've worn but never slowed down this morning and nary a thought of it. Had to get fuel and cans and fill radiators and all that mess and knew I'd have to hustle to get finishes. I wear it some when it gets really hot. Might just put it on tomorrow to see if my head shrunk. Less going on inside but I don't think it's gone down any. The BEST to you, Unc!

You guys are GREAT! You've got all these jobs you work on & know how to use all this different equipment. My brother did teach me how to drive and use the tractor with a bucket on the front. It's been five years, I don't remember now. = [ i somehow feel like i was not allowed, but then, missed that generation with the farm.
Thanks Lewie for the 'good' part. =] Make me feel good to know my curiosity Did help. makes me grin. I started to bombard 'Old Sneelock' with questions, and still probably did, but why just ask, look. When I saw the pictures - That was it. I knew there was some wise info in there. It kind of Showed Off the Drill rather than lectured about it.
Hey, BULL FROG, is good to use for sun protection on skin parts. < [duh] anyway, it's waterproof.
Keep that Swamp Troll free - k? if you need help, i'll be glad to try. ~ peace

You DID do good!Just stating the facts, Mam! And burning diesel is my life and has been ever since 16 or 17 when I'd sneak and run stuff parked somewhere. Then I got a job doing it right out of school and then the Army let me do it and on it went. Diving and grading. No commercial driving now but still burning diesel. And my Sea Bee (WW-2) Uncle that I took after in the machine operating department always said 'The only stupid question is the one you don't ask'.

    • @OldSneelock

Karen O The questions you ask are often about things I do without thinking. It's good for me to be reminded that I need to show not just the how of things, but also the why. Keep asking questions. This channel has generated nearly 1,900,000 views with only a comparative handfull of comments or questions. For every question you ask, there are a thousand who wondered but didn't speak. Not only that, there are only a few dozen who offer suggestions.
In sharing ideas we all gain. For you and everyone else, Keep them coming.

Ol James No need. I just mowed the yard and put it in the shed. I'm impressed with how well it worked.

I have a very specific question on your 1530.
When you hold on to the chuck and turn the crank do the Jaws in the chuck go straight in and out or do they spin around while they're moving in and out?
If they spin around while they go in and out you have the better version just like my 1545. Apparently some of the 1545s and 1530s do not have that feature that locks the internal parts of the chuck rotationally to the main shaft for the purposes of torque in either direction.
As I mentioned earlier when I try to take screws out with my 1530 the chuck opens up and the bit falls out unless I get it real tight with pliers. It should not do that.
On my 1545 the chuck could be so loose that the bit could slip out and it would still have full torque in either direction because the Jaws in the chuck are linked directly to the main shaft!
I just wanted to find out if your 1530 was like that.
If yours does have that added feature you could do a video on it. 😀
It is a fabulous feature that most people don't know about.
