Im really excited that we're getting to the point where "old" digital cameras still hold up. Maybe they will stop pusing new cameras every 3 months and the ones we own will start holding their value better
Well the f55 in Germany or f5 is selling between 2500 and 4000 euros wich is low price but that's good, more affordable now. The thing with some old cameras is that now is a good moment for them cause now we have good place where you can post the image and see it in a very good quality
I’m a fan of the XAVC 480 codec and the 16-bit linear RAW the F55 can do. The FX6/9 can only do up to XAVC 300. Saying that though there’s definitely an improvement in the sensor tech of the newer FX series cams so you can push that XAVC 300 codec further then you could with XAVC 300 on the F55. There’s certain visual traits in the F55 image that I like more then my FX6 but they’re only subtle things that most people really wouldn’t notice. I still use my F55 alongside my FX6 and FX3 on pretty much all my shoots.

Amazing work, it's beautiful! I was wondering how much of that footage is RAW, and wondering your thoughts on the image difference between XAVC 4k internally vs the R5 RAW? Is the RAW worth it? I've been looking for footage comparisons, but can't find any! Anyway, excellent work, and thank you!
Thanks! 95% of that footage is XAVC. More specifically XAVC Class480 variant. RAW is great also. A really nice format to work with if you’re doing some heavy grading. RAW will also hold up better with things like specular highlights and any banding pretty much doesn’t exist. To be honest though it’s extremely hard to visually tell the difference between XAVC and RAW with simple grading.

@venture_films Makes a ton of sense. Even if the image was better in the F55 (which it's arguable both ways of course) it's definitely the more unwieldy choice for many reasons.
Luckily, in my current situation, I am able to choose the older, slower, more hunky camera just because I like the image alone. (: but I agree it's definitely something one should consider. Thanks so much for the detailed info! And that's a great tip on the recording modes!
@@nicholaspitts9720 No problem. My pleasure. Happy shooting!
Still recommend in 2023?
If you can pick it up for a bargain, yes. Especially with a raw recorder. I still use it on shoots alongside my FX6 and FX3. Currently been using it for the last two weeks on a job.
@@venture_films what do you think is a bargain price? IN uk it’s going for around £2,100 without recorder. I’d love the AX7 recorder but it’s expensive.
@@danieIlondon I’ve seen them going for around AU$4k - $5k which I think is pretty good.
Really pleasing to watch, also its an inpiration how to make good quality travelling video.
Thanks very much 🙂
This looks amazing. What’s your favorite lens to use on this camera?
Thanks! I really like my Canon 30-105 cine zoom on this camera. The majority of these shots were filmed with that lens.
Im really excited that we're getting to the point where "old" digital cameras still hold up. Maybe they will stop pusing new cameras every 3 months and the ones we own will start holding their value better
Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Look how well the F35 still holds up: th-cam.com/video/OiRD3GcjmKk/w-d-xo.html
Well the f55 in Germany or f5 is selling between 2500 and 4000 euros wich is low price but that's good, more affordable now. The thing with some old cameras is that now is a good moment for them cause now we have good place where you can post the image and see it in a very good quality
What frame rate have been used in the slow motion scenes (like the helicopter flying one) ?
That would be 180fps
@@venture_films In 2k res?
@@carminedepaola8018 Yeah 2K. The max 4K frame rate you can get from the F55 is 120fps in XOCN with the R7 RAW recorder.
@@venture_films What is the max frame rate in 2k on the F55 using the R5 recorder ?
@@carminedepaola8018 240fps with R5 in 2K.
Are there any specific things this camera does better than, lets say, an FX6 & FX9?
I’m a fan of the XAVC 480 codec and the 16-bit linear RAW the F55 can do. The FX6/9 can only do up to XAVC 300. Saying that though there’s definitely an improvement in the sensor tech of the newer FX series cams so you can push that XAVC 300 codec further then you could with XAVC 300 on the F55.
There’s certain visual traits in the F55 image that I like more then my FX6 but they’re only subtle things that most people really wouldn’t notice. I still use my F55 alongside my FX6 and FX3 on pretty much all my shoots.
@venture_films Thank you for your thoughtful response. Much appreciated.

Curious of your go-to lenses?
The Canon 30-105 cinema zoom pretty much lives on this camera now. If I need wide on the F55 I’ll use the Tokina 16-28 Mk2 cinema zoom 👍🏼
WOW!! What a crazy reel! Was most of this shot with raw to get the incredible colors?
Thanks! 90% of the reel was shot in XAVC - a mix between the 300 @ 480 variant.
@@venture_films Simply phenomenal work, thanks for the answer!!
@@tptrsn No problem! 👍🏼
Hi, what wonderful work!
I have the possibility of acquiring a complete FS7 with its raw interface, the complete AXS-R5 cine alta recorder and an AXS-512S24 card all for $2300, is this a good opportunity?
Do you think that with the FS7 I can get closer to the quality of your images (even if it only films in 12 bit and rolling shutter)?
Best regards ;)
Hi Pj,
That’s a great price for a kit like that. I find the FS7 sensor a bit noisier then the F55’s but saying that I’ve seen some amazing work produced with those cameras. They’re super popular. You’ll be able to get some great images on it 👍🏼
Thank you very much for your response, I will buy it now!@@venture_films
@@venture_films Good evening,
Good evening,
I'm coming back to you because I've finally made the decision, the f55 is too heavy for documentary, so I bought a Sony FS7+ Raw extension unit for a total of $2000 (Sony FS7+AXS R5+ HXR-IFR5, + 512 GB card + card reader)
For the moment I'm still missing an xdca fs7 extension that I'm looking for for around $200 to use 12 bit Raw.
While waiting to find it, I am currently stuck with the xavc 4.2.2 10 bit format, do you think that with a good exposure of the s-log and a clean calibration, I could get closer to your results with this compressed format ?
Regards ;)
@@pjworkinprogress Hi there,
Good to hear you got the FS7.
Absolutely. The FS7 is capable of great images when shooting internal XAVC. I’d personally rate the camera at a lower ISO in CineEI mode so you’re shooting at least one stop brighter though. Correct the exposure shift in post and you’ll have a cleaner image to work with 👍🏼
Most of the reel above was shot in XAVC.
@@venture_films Thank you for your advice, so if I understood well with my beginner English.
Do you advise me to overexpose my image in cine-EI with an additional diaphragm (stop) to have more information which I then correct?
When I was working on the Sony a7sii, I was working with one or two more stops to limit the image noise on s-log3 and "limit the banding of 4.2.0 8bit"
Regards.

Was all this shot with the R5 raw addition
On about 5-10% of this video was shot using either the R5 or R7 RAW recorder.
This looks incredible and is easily the best F55 footage I have ever seen!
I'm thinking about picking up an F5 or F55 later this year as they can be had for pretty little money now. Anything one should check? And do have any experience with the F5 as well?
Thanks!
Yes they can both be picked up for a bargain these days. I’ve not had much experience with the F5’s, only the F55’s. These days though the cost difference between 5’s and 55’s is very little so I’d definitely recommend getting the F55 if you can.
@@venture_films thank you very much! I there anything I should check regarding a used purchase?
@@venture_films And did you mostly shoot RAW with it? Or was that the compressed codec? I was pleasantly surprised by the highlight rolloff in some of these shots and was wondering if that was due to a RAW recording.
@ 95% of that reel is shot using XAVC. A mix between XAVC300 and XAVC480. The rest is shot in RAW. Most of the time with projects I shoot XAVC480 and I find it grades up nicely.
Regarding things to look for I'd be checking for dust on the sensor given the age of the cameras now. That and audio input working fine.
@@venture_films Thanks a lot! Your input is much appreciated!
great value camera, It was a toss up for me between this and the f35 I ended up grabbing the f35 but this was a close 2nd.
I’ve been thinking of picking up an F35. Love the images I’ve seen from it. You happy with it?
@@venture_films Thank you so much!! I'm about to buy a Sony F55 kit with the R5, AXSM reader, all the extras... I wasn't sure if I should resale the RAW bits or use them. I'll test it of course, but I don't think I'll notice the difference either... I'm a "LUT" sorta guy, so heavy grading isn't a thing for me! I was looking at the Sony FX30 for a lightweight rig (currently on Blackmagic P4k)... Any thoughts on that one? Thanks again for your response!
@@halocinematic3127 Yeah to take advantage of RAW you really want to be taking it through a proper colour pipeline in Resolve or another grading app.
The FX30 looks like a great little thing. A mate of mine bought one the other day and is really happy. In my opinion it’s easier to get a more pleasing image straight out of the newer FX series line of cameras compared to the F55/5/FS7 etc. That’s not saying you can’t get great images from those older cameras but it might take a couple of extra steps (depending on lighting and the scene) to get similar results on the older cameras.
@@venture_films Thank you for your insight! I'm going to give the F55 a shot, and hopefully my shots will look as good as yours (with any luck)! Thank you for posting all the beautiful videos, and thank you for the help!!
