Yes! Evel Knievel jumped cars and busses, we jumped each other! A neighborhood with 11 boys all within 3 years age of each other. What could possibly go wrong? Cracked the frame on a Huffy. My Raleigh survived until I got a 10 speed in Jr. High to ride to school. If I timed it right, I could ride that all the way home with no hands. 2 1/2 miles, a couple intersections, and a pair of railroad tracks! That also means no touching the brakes on the handlebars. Helmets? What were those????
I'm 58 years old. When I was younger, I jumped over 55 Hotwheels! I got to meet Evel Knievel years later. I shared this story with him. He looked at me as if I was odd. :(
Schwinn's were top of the line, if you had a Schwinn, your parent's had money or were divorced. Most of us in my neighborhood had Dept. Store bikes, Sears, K-mart, etc.. only one kid I knew had a Schwinn and his parent's were divorced, he always had the best stuff. He had one of the first Schwinn BMX's they made, he also had every accessory, even mag wheels, I remember him going home and after lunch coming back with mag wheels, just to show off also had a number plate on his handle bars, not that he actually raced, but again just show off. I had a Sears BMX, which wasn't bad, it was built by Murray, I took off all the Sears stickers and put on Team Murray stickers.
The things is that we’ve never been free but I perfectly understand what you mean. Those were the days, for sure. Are we really gonna allow them to take that away from next generations?
Yesterday, I was longing for that freedom. There's a swimming hole at the river we went to as kids. So, I rode down to see if the hole was still there, or developed. Much to my happy surprise, after 46 years, it's still there, undeveloped and uninhabited. Went swimming and felt that 70s fun for about an hour!

My Grama had one rule,......"Don't come cryin' to me unless there's a bone stikin' out or you're bleedin' to death" and we jumped our bikes until the sun went down......I miss the late 70's early 80's!!!!
Those were the days. No cell phones, no video games, no internet and almost every car was V8 rear wheel drive. I used to ride my bike all day and night as there was really nothing much to do indoors once bored of listening to records.
So true. I never once remember needing anything done to our bikes either other than chain oiling. Now a mountain bike needs maintenance every two weeks!!!!!
@@thomasodetinape4180 Most Bikes in those days were still made in the USA and were built to take the abuse. Bikes today are built lighter, but can't take the abuse that we used to put them through.
@@JENDALL714 I must have road mine 3-4 years, never once had a brake issue. Mountain bike brake pads are done in a month, sometimes less. I miss the old back pedal brakes. Remember washing your bike. LoL
Our problems were having to shim stripped "goosekneck's" and seat post clamps... Broke my frame once and was demolished inside as new bike wasn't going to happen - my uncle came by next day, loaded my bike up, returned the following day with a big ole' welded repair... Miss those days!...

He could straighten forks and repair frames. Today, they will tell you to throw it away and buy a new one. I hope someone saved his tools.

OH i remember back in the day doing this with the boys in the neighborhood. we would all get in line and jump jumps and on gravel roads ride as fast as we could then lock those back tires up with the awesome coaster brakes and see who could skid the farthest...oh I love being a gen x'r and I miss those days. She was concerned that I’d (to quote You).., “end up in the hospital or worse.” It’s called ‘Love’, Brandon. My Granny allowed me to be a kid but, she STILL feared I may injure myself (or, worse) doing something stupid. ‘Love’ vs. living ‘Life’ isn’t mutually exclusive.

Dude, you hit the nail on the head. Evil Knievel was our hero and we strived to reach higher and further on those bikes. Some of us like me became life long bikers because of it. Great video. We were to poor to own such technology back in those days but the experiences were unforgettable.
Killer, totally cool man. I was there, lol I had a sears clone though not quite as cool but walked wheelies, jumped ramps, dirt hills and definitely did the power slide as often as I could.
Laffy, Not only did we jump ramps in the 70's, when it snowed, we'd wait by the traffic light on our corner of 63rd Street in Southwest Philly. When a car stopped for the red light, 5 or 6 of us would grab the back bumper and squat down still on our feet. We'd hang on when the car got going again. Most times the driver would be cool and pull us for a block to the next corner. If that light was green, we'd let go. Those were the days!
If you want to live in the 70's get rid of your cell phone, computer have 5 TV channels, go outside and play until it is dinnertime then go back out until the street lights come on and repeat 355 days a year. No inside kids allowed.
Wish kids today knew that feeling of setting up Ramps and going big. I lived for that shit in the 90s. All day all night riding bmx and learning new tricks.
Bicycles were fun back then, still are. Started riding again a few years ago. Started with road bikes, picked up a mountain bike so I could start doing wheelies, and jumps!

I can't even tell you how awesome this is, why's I got dust in my eye all of a sudden. Man this brings me back, we use get two buddies to lay down and we'd take turns jumping over each other. Yellow bike guy got er done!, he's know how to do it. There were certain kids ain't know way I'd let them jump me.

I remember my friend Tony and I used to jump ramps in front of his house . He at one time got the neighbors and family members to lay down and jump over them 14 to be exact. His Grandmother was the 14th and cleared her by a long shot! Ok the good old days

You can get new replicas of these amazing machines on the Wal-Mart website.. They're not as good as these bicycles, but they're affordable.. These bikes in original condition cost big bucks..
Thanks for this, Skip, and I was jumping my Sting-Ray in the Seventies, too. And I got to be a lucky duck who actually saw Evel wheelie and jump his Harley at the Ontario Motor Speedway in '71. And afterwards, I suppose I was under the influence of Evel, me and every other kid with a Sting-Ray :)

I cleared 13 trash cans on a downhill street with my 10-speed back in the 70s. Good thing we didn't have any Karen's back in those days around our neighborhood. 😆 🚲 LOL I still have gravel scars on my knees, shins, shoulder and elbows.
Bro - I had that Honda shirt and a Grey Ghost 5 speed Schwinn and and we spent every day in summer making wood ramp jumps, longest skid contests and farthest wheelie contests. Grew up in Sunny Hills Fullerton Cal and once we got a little older I started riding an XR75 Honda and never stopped and I am 56 now and still ride a Pro-circuit CR250 only now we jump big gaps at Beaumont in the lovely hills. I feel sad right now, I want to go back to those times the old gang of about 15 guys in my neighbourhood, everyday was an adventurer and everyone was up for it there was alot of trips to the accident and emergency department and alot of plaster paris, 😂👍

I’m a little bit older but by the early 70s we were ditching the ape hangers and banana seats with sissy bars and replacing them with mx bars and seats off a 10 speed that we got from the swap meet because we realized there’s no way to bale when you’re jumping a 20’ wide rainwash cavern 8’ deep off a dirt ramp that we built with shovels . A lot of teeth / bones / feelings got hurt at that spot . And yes we built plywood ramps but they were 4’ tall , might be the record for how far a qa50 landed successfully. We weren’t evil , just having fun.

Nice Sting Ray. I had a 5-spd in Green metallic with the silver/white metallic banana seat. That puppy was so nice I never jumped with it (like I had with my previous Woolworth single-speed special). IIRC that Schwinn cost around $90.00 after taxes back in 1971/72 - and I helped pay for it.

Man that was awesome! I lived on a Culdisac In Palo Alto, CA in the early 70’s. We could set up our ramps in the street without worries about traffic. All the neighbor kids taking turns. I had a custom bike my brother built for me. Schwinn frame, real motorcycle handlebars, and get this a custom front fork suspension! Someone my brother knew was custom building these suspension forks and he did some trading to get them for me. Of course I was the only kid that had them. Super heavy though, all steel. Aluminum wasn’t a thing in the bike world back then. Moved to a farm in Idaho in 1975. My dad asked me if I would rather have a horse or motorcycle for Christmas. I thought for a minute, pictured myself running the horse along the canal bank, then I pictured myself on the motorcycle JUMPING the canal! Motorcycle won out over the horse and dad bought me a Yamaha 80, that was the end of bicycles for a while.
Wow, that brings back memories. I had an orange Columbia single speed bike and beat the snot out of it with jumps and whatever else you could do. Then the frame broke at the steering fitting. Had it welded and was good to go again. Good days for sure.
There are not enough words in the human language to truly convey the admiration and appreciation to the wonderful person who had the foresight and the passion to capture these truly amazing moments and experiences. This has by far been one of the happiest times that I have ever spent on TH-cam. The emotion that I am experiencing right now is on the one hand shocking to me but at the same time, it is truly healing. I had no photos or home movies of my childhood. My friends. Our moments. But we grew up just as you and your friends did. So I will live through your movie. Thank you for that.
Awesome video! I did the exact same thing. I have a photo of me with my bike wearing a plastic helmet my mom got me at Goodwill complete with the added stars and bars applied with markers.....wearing bell bottoms. Those were the times!
Hell yeah! The kid with the sun visor jumping his Stingray might be the most 70's thing ever. I'm a mid 70's kid, but from Indiana so our 70's lasted through a good part of the 80's too.
Growing up in the 90's, I feel lucky looking back that I still got to do this with my friends, although not on an awesome Schwinn Stingray. I grew up watching re runs of Evel Knievel's jumps so I'd always pretend I was him too. Was totally jealous of my dad getting to grow up in the late 60's/70's.

I can't even tell you how awesome this is, why's I got dust in my eye all of a sudden. Man this brings me back, we use get two buddies to lay down and we'd take turns jumping over each other. Yellow bike guy got er done!, he's know how to do it. There were certain kids ain't know way I'd let them jump me.

Mine was metallic green and had a flat surface rear "slick" tire at one point. I remember the handle bars splitting on a jump landing. Thanks for the nostalgia!

I remember my friend Tony and I used to jump ramps in front of his house . He at one time got the neighbors and family members to lay down and jump over them 14 to be exact. His Grandmother was the 14th and cleared her by a long shot! Ok the good old days
Ahhh man ! Does that ever bring back memories when my Brothers and me also used to jump our bikes on home made ramps,,we,d jump over used tires and had our bumps and bruises trying to be like Evel Knievel, haha, great video !

Greatest decade to be a kid. I loved the 70's.
Driveways have built in ramps on each side at the curb. I could spend all day riding around finding the best ones to get the best lift.

You can get new replicas of these amazing machines on the Wal-Mart website.. They're not as good as these bicycles, but they're affordable.. These bikes in original condition cost big bucks..

Thanks for this, Skip, and I was jumping my Sting-Ray in the Seventies, too. And I got to be a lucky duck who actually saw Evel wheelie and jump his Harley at the Ontario Motor Speedway in '71. And afterwards, I suppose I was under the influence of Evel, me and every other kid with a Sting-Ray :)

Bro - I had that Honda shirt and a Grey Ghost 5 speed Schwinn and and we spent every day in summer making wood ramp jumps, longest skid contests and farthest wheelie contests. Grew up in Sunny Hills Fullerton Cal and once we got a little older I started riding an XR75 Honda and never stopped and I am 56 now and still ride a Pro-circuit CR250 only now we jump big gaps at Beaumont in the lovely hills. I feel sad right now, I want to go back to those times the old gang of about 15 guys in my neighbourhood, everyday was an adventurer and everyone was up for it there was alot of trips to the accident and emergency department and alot of plaster paris, 😂👍

Brings back a lot of memories , thank you . I’m a little bit older but by the early 70s we were ditching the ape hangers and banana seats with sissy bars and replacing them with mx bars and seats off a 10 speed that we got from the swap meet because we realized there’s no way to bale when you’re jumping a 20’ wide rainwash cavern 8’ deep off a dirt ramp that we built with shovels .
A lot of teeth / bones / feelings got hurt at that spot .
And yes we built plywood ramps but they were 4’ tall , might be the record for how far a qa50 landed successfully.
We weren’t evil , just having fun.

Not me any my friends. We all learned how to fight and kept our eyes before PPE even existed.
Yeah, no PPE for us either in the 70's , besides heavy coats to try to numb the sting.
It looks kinda silly now, but at the time, this was as exciting as the x-games is now.

Nice Sting Ray. I had a 5-spd in Green metallic with the silver/white metallic banana seat. That puppy was so nice I never jumped with it (like I had with my previous Woolworth single-speed special). IIRC that Schwinn cost around $90.00 after taxes back in 1971/72 - and I helped pay for it.

Man that was awesome! I lived on a Culdisac In Palo Alto, CA in the early 70’s. We could set up our ramps in the street without worries about traffic. All the neighbor kids taking turns. I had a custom bike my brother built for me. Schwinn frame, real motorcycle handlebars, and get this a custom front fork suspension! Someone my brother knew was custom building these suspension forks and he did some trading to get them for me. Of course I was the only kid that had them. Super heavy though, all steel. Aluminum wasn’t a thing in the bike world back then. Moved to a farm in Idaho in 1975. My dad asked me if I would rather have a horse or motorcycle for Christmas. I thought for a minute, pictured myself running the horse along the canal bank, then I pictured myself on the motorcycle JUMPING the canal! Motorcycle won out over the horse and dad bought me a Yamaha 80, that was the end of bicycles for a while.
Wow, that brings back memories. I had an orange Columbia single speed bike and beat the snot out of it with jumps and whatever else you could do. Then the frame broke at the steering fitting. Had it welded and was good to go again. Good days for sure.
There are not enough words in the human language to truly convey the admiration and appreciation to the wonderful person who had the foresight and the passion to capture these truly amazing moments and experiences. This has by far been one of the happiest times that I have ever spent on TH-cam. The emotion that I am experiencing right now is on the one hand shocking to me but at the same time, it is truly healing. I had no photos or home movies of my childhood. My friends. Our moments. But we grew up just as you and your friends did. So I will live through your movie. Thank you for that.

Awesome video! I did the exact same thing. I have a photo of me with my bike wearing a plastic helmet my mom got me at Goodwill complete with the added stars and bars applied with markers.....wearing bell bottoms. Those were the times!

Growing up in the 90's, I feel lucky looking back that I still got to do this with my friends, although not on an awesome Schwinn Stingray. I grew up watching re runs of Evel Knievel's jumps so I'd always pretend I was him too. Was totally jealous of my dad getting to grow up in the late 60's/70's.
