    I ended up at this video because I was looking for pics of Stingray Pea Pickers on the web. The most popular bikes when I was a kid in the late 60s and 70s. I took a moment to read most of the comments here and all I can say is, I think it was just simply awesome to see you get the bike up to that speed.... I don't care about "the math" or the "technicality" of it. Back when I was a kid, we had only one thing in mind , , , Who had the fastest bike in the neighborhood. Clearly you would've been one of the coolest kids in our neighborhood with your bike. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

      Thanks for your comment! One of my favorites. I just drove past the road a few minutes ago. Sadly, it is not in the great shape it was when I was riding it. I too grew up those same years. We couldn't afford a Schwinn, but I had a sweet Sears Spyder (Christmas of '68). It was a great time to be a kid. The bikes, Hot Wheels,TV shows, etc... We had paper routes, did chores, had real Gym class, even a school nurse. In the the summer we went out in the morning and played outside until dark, sometimes after. Now I collect these muscle bikes and redline Hot Wheels and often find myself listening to those same tunes we all heard on AM radio on my playlists. There are a handful of commentors that just get it. Glad to hear from another of those!

  • @pagb22
    @pagb22 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Cool vid! I made a quick conversion; these speedometers are usually conceived for wheels 26-28". So they give an approximation of the real speed as they are not specific to one size. Since it's connected to a 20 inch wheel, it means the wheels make more rotations than the wheels for which the speedometer was designed. According to my calculation, your real speed is in approximately 42-43 mph, WHICH IS INSANELY FAST ON THIS TYPE OF BIKE (any bike actually) !!!!! I didn't do that to pop your bubble. I just think when the truth is already amazing, there is no need to exaggerate it. If you want to keep track of your real speed, just multiply what you see by 0.77.

    • @billworley8727
      @billworley8727  8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      My bubble is not popped. These Huret made speedometers were designed to work with all sorts of wheel diameters. To be accurate, they require the appropriate hub(driver) installed on front wheel. These drivers utilize a worm gear pitched to the wheel size specified by the embossed hub housing. These drivers were produced for 16", 20", 24", 26", as well as some metric sizes. I have the correct 20" unit installed.

    • @billworley8727
      @billworley8727  8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      For what it's worth, it takes me an hour to mentally prep for these kinds of runs, and a full hour or more to get adrenaline most of the way out of me. 40 MPH doesn't have that effect. I was a bit surprised at the difference between 45 and 50.

    • @terryfromsouthcarolina4601

      I actually got several while stationed at Ellsworth AFB at Rapid City South Dakota. I had an old Schwinn 5 speed with 27 inch wheels. I was trained to ride mountain bikes so a street bike was like riding a feather. The best I ever got was 47 in a 25 zone. I only knew one speed on a bike and that was wide open and flat out!
      All of my tickets got disposed of.
      I had that old bike up in the 50 to 60 mph range on downhills. I was challenged by one of the cops for a bike race from one side of the base to the other, about 4 miles. He lost.
      All those years of hard falls and abuse took their toll though. I'm 63 now and have been 100% disabled since I was 50. But how many people can look back and smile at the fact they routinely got speeding tickets on a bicycle.
      The First Sergeant just used to say...
      "You need to slow down boy!"

      I had a speedometer on a stingray bicycle, 20" tires. It read 5 MPH faster then I was travelling. The speedometer was meant to go onto a bicycle with larger wheels, like a 3- speed bicycle had. 26" wheels? I moved it to the 3-speed bicycle. Then it was dead on accurate.

    • @STV-H4H
      @STV-H4H 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed. I can’t believe this is true. I think the bike was mounted to the side of a car or something. There is some spots where the side to side wobble suggests peddling, but to be peddling that fast, doesn’t jive with the motion, and no way could a single speed 16 or 20” size bicycle be pedaled above maybe 30-35mph. So a free wheel down a steep hill, is the engine driving such speeds. A vid showing evidence that an actual rider is in control, that’s the smoking gun needed to prove this. I can imagine a teenager attempting this in actual practice. I’ve ridden 21 speed road bikes upwards of 50, but on a single (or even 5 speed) Schwinn, bullshit.

    • @mikekrol7485
      @mikekrol7485 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. That was definitely 50. Every biking video appears slower than real life. Same with downhills. They never look steep until you see it in person. Check out Farlow Gap in Pisgah Forest N.C. The video lies.

I have a number of these on various Schwinn bikes including Stingrays, middleweights, and Varsitys'. I also have a number of other vintage brand speedometers mounted to various Murray and Huffy 'muscle bike ' platforms. I know my speedometers. I know my bikes. I know how fast I ride. My friends know fast I ride. These vids are posted just for fun. I'm not promoting some sort of 'record'. These are just for fun...

      I second that, the Hurets are very accurate. Inside they are exactly like analogue car speedos, most likely made with the same tooling, thus the same kind of precision. They even went the extra mile to make calibrated driving units for different wheel sizes such as 16", 20" and 26". I tested a metric Sachs-Huret and a VDO against a GPS and both were within 5kph at 40 kph.
