This song and "Cloudburst on Shingle Street," are his most intimate songs for me. They're about surviving. Oceanea is that place we go, that internal place, to heal ourselves and move on. It's about finding beauty in our pain, learning the lessons from it, and finding our strength in the face of adversity. Both songs are expressions of a bruised and battered fighter celebrating his survival.
Thomas Dolby knows how to write melodies that utterly haunt me, and stir up memories from decades ago filled with unknown longings. this song, 'Valley of the Minds Eye' 'one of our submarines' 'I love you goodbye' 'screen kiss' are some of my favorites that do this, to name a few...
Yes, Maha. I'm usually so hung up on the beauty of Dolby's chord progressions and timbral textures that it can take me years to fully appreciate his work as a melodist and lyricist.
Some acts from the 80's were just that ... "acts". A long time ago Thomas Dolby drew a line in the sand which separated the acts from the artists. Beautiful!!!
This is without doubt one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard!...it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!....he's one very talented songwriter!.
Mom, I'm listening to this beautiful song, and thinking of all of the wonderful times we had together, the silly jokes, the singing and laughing. All of the special things you said to me throughout my life, and you filled my life with love! Hopefully, I will join you and Dad in heaven when my time on earth is done. I love you with all of my heart, and I always will love you! Dad, you are also often in my hearts and my love is deep and true for you as well! Joel
Mr. Dolby's artistry continues to leave me somewhat breathless. It makes me recall the days of listening to The Golden Age of Wireless and gaining inspiration enough to become an engineer so I could understand the bygone era of then and the future of tomorrow. Thank you Mr Dolby for continuing to inspire with your art.
Mr. D. I’ve been an admirer of your talent for a long time but I’ve only just heard this song for the first time today. You have an astounding ability to create a world of tranquility in just the length of a song. I can’t believe it, you’ve done it again. You’ve written a song and I can’t stop singing it…..🎶
Also, as for the auto-tune comments, I don't agree. I'm a professional backing backing singer and I'm well aware of the techniques available. I don't believe there's a single. Note auto-tuned, it's just a great vocal with a gorgeous reverb. The piano 'splashes' are beyond gorgeous as is the major 7th it finishes on.
I know that many love Mr. Dolby's song "Screen Kiss," but this track "Oceanea" (for the lyrics and restrained motifs) and "Budapest by Blimp" (for the sonic layering and general atmosphere) always make me emotional.
Just when you thought Thomas Dolby may have been a youthful indulgence, you find him here in the now. This track is about what two years old now? Those of you not familar with this artist need only to familarize yourself with his earler work in the 80's and you will hear that it is just as relevant then as it is now and beyond......;)
One of my favorites. Was so glad to see you put out some new songs after so long in between. I hope to catch you on tour again some day if you go out again.
Oceanea is a truly beautiful track. Thomas' soft side always creates some of his best music. Catherine's artwork makes the old tank traps at Sizewell look beautiful too. Like magical ice cubes made from the stuff of Shingle Street.
Beautiful song Thomas and Eddie has never sounded better. Who designed your Oceanea graphics? Nice styling. One last question, what exactly are those concrete squares?! Defence against erosion of the coast or some remnant from WW2? Good work fella.
Thats great stuff, still so Dolby but also different. Great vocals - really great . Lovely match with Eddie Reader. Would love to do an interview Thomas!
When I first heard Thomas Dolby in the early 80`s I could not believe how modern, special and still extreme groove-oriented he was. Each record has its very special perspective on music and soul. Thomas Dolby pushed me to explore more possibilities to compose music. That modern sound does not has to be soulless. It can be just as tender & sensitive - without loosing the groove. And man - his arrangements!! Most of the modern composers/producers have lost that perspective - and also the ability to swing. Love you Thomas!
I’m a lifelong Gary Numan-fan. But: when it comes to musical quality I have to admit that TMDR is more of a Master. This is a fantastic song, but I won’t forget “golden age of wireless” either! Brilliant album! One of our submarines is my most favourite song ever. Such emotion. What Dolby and Numan share is their passion for sound/noise and electronics (in different ways though), and somehow their works are highly emotional. This is another great example! Pure!!
Thomas its been a long time coming but brilliant i hope there is more like this on the new album, dont like the toad licker stuff so lets get of the american coutry stuff and back onto more like this. Karlos, Saw you in 85 @ the asylum Nottingham brill show will never forget.
Thomas. As a person who has traveled, I would never begrudge a Man who goes home again. I do hope you remember some good folk on this side of the Pond.
I'm, so glad to see all the people loving Thomas Dolby. This song is my favorite of his new music Map of the floating city. I love this guy!!! Sooooooo creative in a field of ice.....he for sure lives in a suitcase!!!
Beautiful! I loved Eddi Reader's vocal on Cruel, and this is even better! Looking forward to seeing The Invisible Lighthouse at the Roundhouse - should be a great night!!
Anyone complaining about he autotune should actually listen to the song - about half way through, he turns it off, so you can hear his un-tuned voice, so it's not like he can't sing - he was obviously just using it as an effect.
La verdad que Thomas Dolby en un genio,me gustan los diferentes sonidos que logra, esta a un peldaño mas arriba de muchos ya que logra con sus canciones generar una atmósfera única. Sigue entregándonos tu talento.
Mr. Dolby do u ever plan to tell us where u r really from? Or will we have to just be content with the 'plausible denial cover' that ur unique, 1 man, musical genre provides? 🤓🙂🖐🏽✌🏾
Happy belated birthday @ThomasDolby! The Frozen River tribe members enjoyed your visit to the Triple Door! (Seattle thanks you~) I'm enjoying your new CD, Map of the Floating City, the songs are haunting & so lovely! Thank you
I just love that song. Takes me to my own Oceanea. Good to hear new music from you. Makes me want to listen to your other Albums in my Collection. Thnx.
I've been following TMDR since I first heard Leipzig back in the day. Undoubtedly a stunning piano/synth player from Foreigner to his PrefabSprout work. Definitely part of the soundtrack of my life, and now a new favourite. Absolutely gorgeous song, Edie Readers vocals are beautiful too. Blown me away.
Dear Thomas, I missed the release of this album, don't know how or why, but it is the best gift since Astronauts & Heretics - and if you knew me, you'd know that was in my top 10 ever. Not any more, this edges it out. Stunning soundscapes.
Anyone who can write on song like Oceanea is a genius.
The most beautiful song that I have ever heard. I sincerely mean that.
I’m a fool for ever doubting you’d ever write a song to rival ‘Screen Kiss’, Thomas. This is sublime.
This song and "Cloudburst on Shingle Street," are his most intimate songs for me. They're about surviving. Oceanea is that place we go, that internal place, to heal ourselves and move on. i'd add that to me it represents a perfect place of peace, but not sure if i'm alone there or not, and that makes it sad and content same time.
Ohh man you have hit the nail with that awesome comment😌
This is just beautiful... Could be the best thing he's ever written. Very unexpected and incredibly inspiring.
Thomas Dolby knows how to write melodies that utterly haunt me, and stir up memories from decades ago filled with unknown longings. this song, 'Valley of the Minds Eye' 'one of our submarines' 'I love you goodbye' 'screen kiss' are some of my favorites that do this, to name a few...
screen kiss is a true GEM
+maha77 Totally agreed, I'd just add Budapest by a blimp, to me a perfect nocturnal drive song
Yes, Maha. I'm usually so hung up on the beauty of Dolby's chord progressions and timbral textures that it can take me years to fully appreciate his work as a melodist and lyricist.
@@TheSpookyDuke Budapest is DA MAXXXXX (not only the beginning is not only on par with "shine on you crazy diamond')
Close But No Cigar - is one of the anthems of my life .....
Dolby is one of the most talented song writers alive. Vastly underrated.
Some acts from the 80's were just that ... "acts". A long time ago Thomas Dolby drew a line in the sand which separated the acts from the artists. Beautiful!!!
This is one of the most beautiful and moving songs I've ever heard. The first time I heard this I was simply blown away.
I listened to it at least 15 times in a row.
Me too. Dramatic as it may sound, it's life-changing.
The song and the sound makes me cry... - amazing and so touching! Thank you Thomas Dolby for your wonderful songs during the 80's, 90's... - till yet!
Eddi Reader's 'answer' back on this is gorgeous. A lovely, lovely song. I really want to do something visual with this myself, it's inspiring.
This is without doubt one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard!...it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!....he's one very talented songwriter!.

I love this song because it reminds me of my beloved wife... She died far too youg.
Sorry for your loss. May the love live on forever, Michael.
She is with you :-)
Sorry brother. This is a beautiful song, and if it reminds you of your wife she must have been beautiful, too.
Keep smiling Michael, you'll meet your lovely Missus one day in some better place.
really sorry
Im so sorry man
One of the most beautiful songs that should have been played on the radio....
Learning how to shed my skin, renewed by this song. I imagine stumbling home to finally rest there in the heart of comfort.
Mr Dolby plus the glorious Ms Reader.
I think I've died and gone to Heaven.
Sublime, simply sublime music.
Here is something you don't see much of any more.
A real artist creating brilliant work.
Cannonballs
Ricochet around the room
I hurry home to lick my wounds
I stumble home to Oceanear
A nightingale
Sat above my mother's tomb
Twilight in the afternoon
I stumble home to Oceanear
Not far from here
On some other Eco zone
The crocuses are still in bloom
I stumble home to Oceanear
Yeah
And I am free
I'm soaring on a thermal wind
I'm learning how to shed my skin
I made it home to Oceanear

A long way from his 80s stuff... heard this on a college station late at night a few days ago... I'm sold ! Beautiful!
As beautiful as our Earth is this song...

Very nice indeed. More, please!
He crafts a tune....you are almost forced to to acknowledge the artistry...Love his work
Mr D never ceases to amaze....a beautiful and timeless tune. Gorgeous photos, too.

One of my favorites. Was so glad to see you put out some new songs after so long in between. I hope to catch you on tour again some day if you go out again.
This is a stunning tune. I've just finished The Speed of Sound, it was a very wonderful and inspiring read. Thank You.
Oh man. I thought he was just a one hit wonder.
Turns out he was saving his beauty for TH-cam
No one today even comes close to the genius of Thomas Dolby.
What about Todd Rundgren "Afterlife" ?
zimriel Check out the Astronauts and Heretics album
"any fool can write a hit..." 😉
Oceanea is a truly beautiful track. Thomas' soft side always creates some of his best music. Catherine's artwork makes the old tank traps at Sizewell look beautiful too. Like magical ice cubes made from the stuff of Shingle Street.
love this song.....beautiful
Listen this this all the time when on airplanes and when I need cheering up. Absolutely the most beautiful song Thomas has written (so far).
Paul Hollingworth I agree. I really love this and Cruel, Close but no cigar and I love you goodbye- the slow songs are so encompassing
these songs are way too beautiful/intricate to enjoy while flying
Excellent Thomas Dolby!
Wow what a stunning voice ....really beautiful song.....
Lovely Thomas tank traps have a wonderful structure to them layered like the song.
This is just beautiful.

Oceanea gives me a reason to meditate again. I can sing this song with spiritual pride and keep my eyes closed. This is a place i believe is real.

This is why I've always loved Dolby. A master at exploring emotions!
There are very few songs that make me cry listening to them, and now I have to add this song to that small list. CURSE YOU. >|
Which of the great gods in the sky do I thank for sending me the music of Thomas Dolby over these many years?
The remixes of this piece are just as fantastic as this. I regularly play this on repeat rotation and oh how it transports me to a wonderful place.
This piece is so inspiring, sad and beautiful. Memories of a loved one after a loss.

I think the effect he uses on his voice is a plugin called Melodyne. Still a great artist after all these years.
Excellent !!!
