@@axel5178 ,simplistic reasoning from you, tbh.
Having big names in a team, don't automatically make that team "Op". And that was clearly the case of PSG.
Neymar was often injured. And for the (short while) he managed playing time, his performances were kinda unstable/erratic.
As for Mbappé, i lost count on how many great chances (created by Messi) he squandered. Yes, Mbappé is a beastly footballer.. but he's also prone to failures. And it happened a lot when Messi was there.
Moreover, the PSG team has been a collective disaster for years now.
Most their big names have been (mostly) playing in an apathetic (and ambitionless) way... and Messi had the misfortune of having to deal with that mess.
As for playing in the French league, well...
by now, i think that we can all acknowledge the fact that Messi has the talent and competence to succeed in (just) any league. Those numbers have nothing to do with it being the French, nor the Spanish league. • Messi is a guy who makes things happen, regardless of the club, league and environment he plays in.

Messi had the most Man Of The Match Awards in Europe during 2022/2023 season 14. Halaand had only 6. That's how good Messi was in that PSG side the fact that he set the bar too high for himself does not mean he had a very bad season. Out of Halaand's 56goals I can bet 53 of them were just one touch goals, he is an excellent goal scorer but to say is best allround. footballer it's injustice to football. He can not dribble past a single player

    • @HoistusMaximus
      @HoistusMaximus 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Haaland's entire contribution to a game would fit inside 30 seconds. He's ruthless and efficient, but he's simply not the world's best footballer. Cannot stand when people say "stats" meaning goals.
Haaland 53, Messi 38...okay yeah, more goals
Assists and it 25 vs 9
Chances created - well then it starts to get silly.
Dribbles, passses, ball retention and MOMENTS. If the Ballon d'Or criteria doesn't have room for the moments that make you say "Wow!" then that would be sad. Not all brilliant play results in a goal, but it is the reason we watch football.
Justin sums it up perfectly: Messi's just a better footballer and has been better, contrary to Simon's idea that it was just 6 out of the 7 games at the WC

Looking objectively at the (individual) performance of the player:
Messi was PSG's best performer for several months, and the guy who was behind (most of) the best attacking moves of the team. I lost count how many times Messi produced excellent assists which were squandered by his teammates, Mbappé in particular. Regardless of PSG's failures as a team, Messi did his job and he did it very well.
No wonder he was Ligue 1's best playmaker (plus, one of the highest goal scorers).
And the official numbers don't even reflect the fact that Messi was the player involved in most of the direct and indirect goalscoring chances created.

But you forgot about one thing that is much more important than this: which is the narrative. People will have different opinion on this but at club level Haaland is definitely better. First season in Man City, breaking records and winning the treble. BUT was mostly criticized by failing short in important moments.
On the other hand we have Messi, playing his last World Cup for Argentina, being the best player on his team and the tournament. Scoring 2 goals in the Finals while also creating a lot of chances (basically doing it all), and to top it off, finally completing football by winning a World Cup.

The simple fact is, as good and deadly as Haaland is, he gets so many goals because he is the finishing touch to what is easily the greatest team in world football right now, and that's coming from a Liverpool fan. Haaland is certainly an important cog in the Manchester City team, but more often than not, Messi is the heart of whichever team he plays for. Look at the success of the Manchester City team last season. As the first caller says, replace Haaland with Kane and Manchester City do just as well, if not better. If you take Messi out of that Argentina team, there's no way on earth they win the most prestigious trophy in the world. That's why Messi won the Ballon D'or.

This misnomer that messi had a bad season needs to be challenged. He had a down season compared to his absolutely outrageous previous standard that may never be matched. Still averaged a goal contribution every game, won the league and the world cup (carrying Argentina in the process). So he performed well all year for club and country. Haaland performed outstandingly for club but not for his nation (Norway didn't even reach the wc). It's not unfair for haaland to miss out, its unlucky that messi still had an excellent year. And I refute the "messi bias idea" at the balon dor bc didn't messi miss out in 2018 despite a goal contribution every 57 minutes when modric got it just for the wc (which Croatia didn't even win)? The 2 years in recent memory that messi was overlooked he still had a strong case to win (on a few occasions I think he was omitted from the shortlist)

Simon's surely barely watched PSG last season - same goes for English fans (most only watch their own team by the way). They just echo the same narratives the pundits spit at them.
Messi was the best thing for PSG last season, while he was fit. He practically ran their offence. I agree he was below his standard the year before. He then delivered at the world cup, carrying a young Argentine team. The MAMMOTH PRESSURE on his shoulders??
“Did you see Mbappe in the final...” .. Mbappe was listless till the last 10 mins of the game. He scored the goals, but suffered in overall play.
Haaland is a goal scorer with an incomplete game. Wasn't even the best player on his team. There's NO WAY he deserved the award over Messi. Haaland won an award designated to the top goal scorer; he just wasn't the better overall player last season.

Haaland ability has improved so much his link up play, his holding up the ball, his passing range and his movement on and off the ball. They could of put that in the video before but you'll still hate. His job is to put the ball in the back of the net that 90% of strikers are struggling to do. He deserved the award for his all round game and helping city finally get the champion league. That they couldn't do with Aguero their greatest striker.

If a team is composed of 10 players and a goalkeeper, then the top 10 players on the shortlist for the Ballon D'or should not only be classed as world class but should be the only players who merit the world class tag. 100 countries have chosen them. Otherwise what exactly does world class mean? Does it mean you might get into a team of the best 11 players or not?

  • @joshuamassawe2474

Mbappe was not outstanding in the World cup final, but his second goal was. He was no where to be seen until the 80th minute when they received the penalty and disappeared again after the 2nd goal until they got awarded the 3rd penalty. Messi was everywhere in that final. He set up the 2nd goal and scored every other goal. He created almost every big chance Argentina had. At PSG, he finished with 32 goal contributions in the league and 8 goal contributions in the UCL despite not being the player the team was built around.
Haaland had most goals, yes, but he had no major contribution in the semi finals and finals for the FA cup and UCL. We who watch Man City know that he isn't even the best player in his own team; De Bruyne, Bernado Silva, Rodri and Gundogan were the driving force behind his goals and especially the semi finals and finals wins. That's why without Rodri and Bernado Silva Arsenal whooped them this season. If at all goals were all that mattered then Modric would never have won. Benzema deserved it because he actually scored his numerous goals when they mattered most, unlike Halaand who'd score 5 goals against RB Liepzig then miss a penalty vs Bayern, and disappear against Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Nedved was sensational at Juventus, among key players who helped club eliminate Real Madrid in Semifinals and winning Serie A. Meanwhile Henry's Arsenal was eliminated in Last 16 group stage against Valencia. Don't remind of that home fixture against Roma where Arsenal misses easy chances.
Later on in the league they bottled 12 point lead in EPL, conceding title to Manchester United. Infact Ruud Vaanisteroy was better player who stepped up when needed most.

A definitive definition of 'world class' varies from person to person. Over the last 20 years the likes of Rooney, Kane, Gerrard & Lampard for me could be called world class as at their best I think pretty much every team in the world would've had them at their club. However if you're defining world class as the best player in their position then the ONLY English player this century that would qualify (for me) is Ashley Cole, who for a significant number if seasons was the best LB in world football. He also never once had a bad tournament for England which you can't say about 3/4 of the players I've previously mentioned.
As for Messi winning the Ballon d'Or, whilst it was inevitable, I personally think it was completely justified. Haaland had an incredible season but - and there's no way of proving this - I think the chance that Man City would've won the treble without Haaland is much higher than the chance that Argentina would've won the World Cup without Messi

All of those players were world class. They would have walked into any club side or international side in world football. That's world class.
