My pigs haven't aren't a fan of music, but they like to hear me gently singing. I'll often sing children's songs while cleaning their cage, and they'll hang out with me if they're in the mood. I think they hear it as a "everything's all right" noise.
I have to share my bedroom where I sleep and am on here watching her videos doing the timestamps. I know people on the live nd in wheekers love having their piggies on their laps or chesty while watching movies on their tv, so i'd say most guinea pigs are being exposed to all kinds of sounds. I keep my music on a low level so it's not loud. They even seem to like certain songs
I always left the radio on when we left the house so my piggy had the sound of company (I didn't know she needed another piggy friend). She seemed to appreciate it.
Hi Saskia. Interesting video. What you're saying does make sense. I have 4 piggies and I sometimes put the radio on very softly or I put on the TV for them softly. They even seem to lie in their hay pile, munching away on it while they watch the TV. They really don't even seem to notice the sound much. They don't change behaviour or act quiet. They still do zoomies and carry on as normal. I'd never play loud music around them, I do believe that would freak them out. Triffic is so cute and you look gorgeous today! 💛
I subconsciously sing random songs when I'm alone and my first boar used to react the same way to it that he would to a plastic bag. Whenever I didn't do what he wanted though, he'd SCREECH like a fire alarm to make sure I knew 😂
I would imagine it is pretty overwhelming to them. Which would make them quiet. I think people generally do not have an understanding of just how sharp all of their senses are. Which is great for survival but a challenge for a captive piggy. We want to hold them and love them and they are just so sensitive that even touch can become overwhelming, which is why they tend to want short spurts of attention, unlike a cat or a dog. I use the 10 minute rule. I don't hold mine for more than 10 minutes. That's when they start to get antsy pants. That's just an example. I actually sleep in the same room as my piggies and I have the TV on all night (don't judge.😂) I make sure it's low and and very calm things like cooking shows or antiques road show type things and I make sure that their hides are put in in such a way that they can get away from the light to rest. They have gotten used to it and I have even caught them watching it. Idk what it looks like for them. But they do stare at it. They do seem to like watching Saskia when I put it on the TV...lol. They actually get excited when treats are handed out and the rescue pigs start wheeking! 😂 If they are in their houses, they peek out to see if food is coming for them as well! Anyway...I'd say what Saskia is saying makes sense.
You know you make a good point and I was younger. I had multiple guinea pigs growing up and my mom always played some relaxing music for you know in the house just in general we thought it was really helping the guinea pigs. It was like a light. Melody which wasn't crazy, but at times I think it made the guinea pig's nervous. So now knowing this I learned something
I am glad for this info, recently had 3 piggies with health issues and would always put some relax music on for my piggies I think because I enjoy music so much and figured they like it. Lately been finding it hard to use extra effort to put music on after my 3rd piggie was diagnosed with early sign respiratory infection. Now today she got her last dose med and I am happy that piggies are better off without music. My second piggie had mascetomy double nipples had cancerous tumors removed,he is a ll healed up
Hello! Recently I tried to play some soothing music for my piggies. I decided to make it really quiet and especially one without any sudden and harsh noises, something like a relaxing music for meditation for us. I made sure that it is quiet enought that they can hear anything despite the "music". I have a feeling that despite them being animals, that kind of music can be actually a little bit relaxing to them (for example, it didn't bother my sleeping piggies at all, they were flopped and just chilling all the time), of course while we play it really, really quiet that it doesn't bother the sound of their surroundings.
I think there is a possibility that the guinea pigs might enjoy and/or tolerate some kind of music in some form. I wonder if they would like being sung to gently by a human that they have bonded with, of course that would be different than just music because they probably understand what is creating the sound and if it's soft and gentle it may make them happy. It's all guessing tho, and maybe some wishful thinking 🥺
You are absolutely right. Of course they are intelligent enough to pick up the mood of their 2-leg-herd-member just as they lick each others wounds or nibble an war when their fellow needs comfort or mourn at a loss...
nah mine arent even bothered when sing my lungs out, they just lie there sometimes even sleeping, i think a little music would be stimulating for them while im gone
This is an interesting subject. I get that certain types of music or sounds may cause fright or anxiety so it's definitely worth considering and bearing in mind. However, we also don't want people to think that piggies should be shut away in quiet room where they won't be disturbed. Of course they need piggy friends but I believe they also need/enjoy our interactions regularly too. I'm lucky enough to work from home and share my office with my piggies. So they experience me typing, taking phone calls, listening to music etc. I also watch Saskia's videos and other GP videos in this room so they hear other piggies wheeking from my computer! None of it seems to phase them. Of course if I turn my chair too fast to admire them they can run for the hills, but that's to be expected!!
I have 3 that love and pur with certain songs and all seems to enjoy music ❤ but I could be wrong, not all my piggies run or freeze, the 3 that love or seem to love it, seem to to go near my cell and lay down then when I pet them they purr, but the others yes it could be what in the world is that….❤
Same. I keep the music down low, it's never loud and they love certain songs they popcorn to. Some of it I'm sure they don't care for but certain song get them happy. I live with my pigs. I watch my her videos in here. I'm around my pigs 95% or more of the time
i have guinea pigs in my bedroom so it's a bit of a struggle, i also love pop and rock music so that can be quite harsh, i try not to play music out loud but sometimes i just have to when i'm doing house work, they seem to be okay with it though and carry on like normal
We have a water fountain for the cats in the vicinity of my girls , so the trickling sound is part of the environmental sound s they hear. One of the bad noises is when the dog starts barking like crazy
whenever I'm going out for a long period of the day, or if I get a new intake in, I will play "guinea pig music" for them but from a distance, my computer is downstairs in the living room, and they're upstairs in a bedroom, so the sound is muffled for them to begin with so it's not nearly as bad as if i was to drop a frying pan right beside them, So i have noticed that my guinea pigs actually do relax when listening to calming nature sounds music from a far (nature sounds like birds chirping and tweeting, the sound of water like waves in an ocean, or just classical type music, nothing too abbrasive. I'm not sure if i"m making any sense to you or not though) LOL but yeah if it's loud and right beside them they startle, scatter, and/or freeze and do that "brrr" vibrate noise. Cuz they don't like that.
Hi Triffic 👋 I used to have a radio on a low volume when I went out. Background sound is useful for them but not rowdy. I would say that they DO need company of another piggie. ❤
I, not thinking, turned some music on while i was cleaning around them. That was a big no. They freaked out and hid. It took me a while and much dandelion to convince them to come out. TV is okay but not too loud.
hi Saskia. thank you for this video, i never use music to calm my two guinea pigs because as i was watching a guinea pig video with both my guinea pigs, i noticed that they didn't really like that although i was thinking that they liked it because of the sounds of other guinea pigs and i turned it off right away
I play very quiet piano music for my piggies when I go to bed and it almost seems to calm them down, they don’t mind it. Sometimes I’ll softly sing to my piggies too. And I know exactly what you mean when they run and make a purr noise, because one of my piggies are skittish and she does that every time she hears a loud sound. 💕✨
EDIT: You've never talked about this one before that I remember of. I keep the music on low. I live with them. There is no other room they can be in. Beavis has been listening to music 4 1/2 years, Nacho almost 3 1/2 years. I know many people watch movies with their guinea pigs on them while watching. Guinea pigs hear the tv or all kinds of sounds though out the day. I don't know how I feel about this one because I know I am trying so hard to be responsible and be a good mom to my piggies. Nacho often sleeps with his eyes closed, sometimes even out in the open. I'm Not saying you're wrong. but I hope you're not saying all of us who been doing this are bad guinea pig parents. I do everything for my pigs. Everything I learned from you. I had always figured as long as it was at a low level.
My piano stands in the same room as the guinea pig cage. I don't think they find it soothing when I play a relaxing song. But they tolerate it, because they know they will get a pea flake before and after my playing. It is their reward for dealing with piano music. I do the same with the vacuumcleaner. 😂😂😂 Don't worry, it is a digital piano, so I can also mute it when I play or practice not so relaxing music. 😅
I haven't played music for especially guinea pigs, but they have heard it when I have listened it, or watched tv. Once I had a guinea pig on my lap while there was music in television, and the guinea pig was hypnotised by one particular song (or maybe by the singer singing it?). It just stared tv, and didn't move. When the song ended, it woke up from hypnosis. But I don't think it was negative, it wasn't tense, but it's muscles were relaxed (I would have felt, if it was tense). It just looked very focused. But there have been other kind of reactions. Another guinea pig made that kind of warning purring sound (I can't describe it better in English, since it's not my native language, but I trust you know which sound I mean) constantly during a song, and did repeatedly through the whole song. During the next song it didn't make any particular reaction, so I interpreted it that it didn't like that particular song. Maybe there was some musical effect, that it didn't like in it.
I play piano and when I'm not with them I play " relaxing piano music" on the Echo. I never play it loudly. They usually nap during the day and seem to like it. As I'm listening to you Saskia, I'm realizing it might not be so good.
My girl actually seemed to like Of Monsters And Men, like, when I started playing that quietly, she actually plopped down and relaxed, while she seemed to dislike rock and stuff. Darted into her house and did the 'brrrr!' sound. My current boys don't seem like the music type, and that's okay too. they just ignore it.
Funny you should say this, my girlies love music. my mango specifically has a taste for imagine dragons (she gets all cheerful and cute when I play it for her, and sometimes she lays down and naps) and they all respond happily to being sung to. They also enjoy tv despite having virtually no clue what the screen is even doing. However, if they don’t like a song or noise, I will NEVER hear the end of it. My newest baby tells me off if my clothes brush the carpet too loudly when I stand up, or if she hears my keys jingle 😂
I don't purposely leave anything on for my guinea pigs but they're in the living room and hear the tv when I'm home. They just ignore it. I've actually noticed the guinea pigs I foster in a spare room are more skittish because they're not as desensitized to talking and noises, though I keep their room door open and it has helped some. I know people who keep their guinea pigs in a room that is only visited 1-2x a day and they are extremely skittish. Being skittish would help them in the wild but don't make great pets.
i think ir depend on the piggy my gpigs tolerate music very well and even dont mind when im listening to rock in my room but i heard some gpigs might get scared of music thats only my opinion
I used to have two guinea pigs and they absolutely hated Mariah Carey's "like that" song. They used to make that burrrr noise whenever I played that song. :/
Myself took rather to heart your words that guinea pigs are a bit askeeeeewd by muc mysic, sow, that night this holiday, myself refrained from playing any, until myself about on the whiching hour, and quite without thinking, put on the Alvin and the chipmunks cd. Politics tis said Is the art of the comprise, and Sarge, who complains so little, he complains and he's little, nuance, found the chipmunks muc you might find those of a Latin persuasion to favour the Spanish mass as opposed to the English. So guinea pigs find some music he might otherwise and in entirety be opposed to, finds comfort in the political correctness that is, Alvin and the chipmunks.
My pigs haven't aren't a fan of music, but they like to hear me gently singing. I'll often sing children's songs while cleaning their cage, and they'll hang out with me if they're in the mood. I think they hear it as a "everything's all right" noise.
I totally agree w u Saskia
I put on soft jazz for my boys everyday 😊
I agree with you saskia.♥️🐿️
Our sanctuary piggies live in a musician’s home. No way to avoid the sound of practicing. So ours are used to it, for them it is normal noise.
I have to share my bedroom where I sleep and am on here watching her videos doing the timestamps. Yeah they accept common sounds just like I am not startled at the train passing 500m from home.
This is very good information. Music is likely too stimulating, and they are likely overwhelmed. Too many senses firing at the same time likely.
I always left the radio on when we left the house so my piggy had the sound of company (I didn't know she needed another piggy friend). She seemed to appreciate it.
The thumbnail is a guineapig centaur jaja😂 edits yes! My guinea does not hesitate to tell me if she dislikes certain sounds ,too cute!

Same here. They seem to like the presence of a soothing sound.

You are so sensitive and sweet. Had a guest today and he started to play a dramatic sonata. Next time we put on Headphones BC that is too heavy .

A Boar of mine used to love Kylie Minogue! He'd stop whatever he was doing, even eating, & enjoy!🥰
😂😂😂❤.
My son puts a music on and i like it so maybe they love it as well 😂😂😂❤❤

He is so cute 😊

No offense. You are a good mommy caring well! All of your comment speaks of this.
My Guinea pigs hear my daughter play music on her phone & they wheek 😂😂😂
It’s anything from pop to heavy metal.
It’s not overly loud.
They certainly like that. Cerebral stimulation is good!
I LOVE LOVE piggies I used to have two as they are social animals ya got to have two . But now I live ina nursing home
