The Rise of Hadith Forgery | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • This video will advance your understanding of why hadiths began to be forged and how #hadith scholars dealt with fabricated hadiths. Dr. Shabir Ally explains that hadiths were forged after the death of the #Prophet #Muhammad (peace be upon him) for a variety of reasons. For example, people invented hadith that lent religious backing and support for their leader over others. Dr. Shabir Ally describes the detailed attempts scholars went through to parse hadiths. He explains that even though in principle textual analysis was acknowledged as a valid method of evaluating hadith, it was not exercised in a thorough way.
This is part 2 of our “Can We Trust Hadith?” series, hosted by Dr. Safiyyah Ally. See part 1 here: • The Anatomy of Hadiths...
0:00 After the death of the Prophet Muhammad, there was a need for hadiths
2:11 Rise of political entities led to forgeries for sectarian reasons
6:23 Personal reasons for forging hadith
7:23 The phenomenon of invented hadiths was widely recognized by Muslim scholars
    8:30 Forgeries were widespread
10:46 Scholars engaged in an extensive evaluation of hadith to get rid of fakes
11:11 How scholars assessed the chain of narrators
15:27 Scholars also analysed the text of the hadith
16:28 Weaknesses in the textual scrutiny
19:51 Fabricated hadiths remain in the top six hadith collections

My gripe as a Muslim is this: When the Quran Itself states that it is COMPLETE, FULLY DETAILED, NOTHING HAS BEEN OMITTED FROM THE BOOK.
In addition: The Quran is THE BEST HADITH.
" IN WHICH hadith after this will you believe. ( 77:50).
"Woe to every fabricating imposter." ( The Quran warning of false hadith).
Why then have Sunni Muslims come to place so much emphasis and blind acceptance of man-made hadith??
The Quran states clear cut that the task of the Messenger( Rasool) was to ONLY DELIVER THE MESSAGE.
The Quran states that the task of Rasool was not even to explain the Quran! This task solely belonged to Allah. So why man-made hadith??

Once a person reads the Quran for themselves, they discover a great deal that appears different to what the majority of muslims are doing. The Quran even states, " Just because the majority are doing something, do not assume they are correct and start following them."

@@centric145 That's the job of the scholars to provide people with clarity. Unfortunately very few do that. The collection of hadith and authentication was a rigorous project, done over decades during the time of Abbasids. It also coincides with the tumultuous political situation of post Prophet Arabia. Let me give you an example. Go watch Mufti Menk's video on Caliph Uthman. He says all the right things about Uthman, and in the end messes up. He says, Uthman was killed because some Jew conspired. The actual reality was much more complicated, and no Jew was involved. In fact, one of the killers of Uthman was the son of Abu Bakr, the first Caliph. How many scholars you know teach the correct history ? Mostly just avoid, or just omit key details. Can't expect that from a popular Shaikh as Menk. If regular Muslims don't have the idea of how it actually was during the times of Rashiduns, it's very hard to grasp how and when Hadith forgeries happened.

First of all let me clarify the prayer thing, prayers were performed daily five times a day so people remembered it very well so there is no doubt about that, the doubts increases when it comes to how to act on certain situations. Second of all, the purpose of this series is to make people realize that it's not ok to follow hadeeths blindly, not to make you stop following hadeeths. May Allah bless you 💙

The crux of the discussion is when Dr. Ally says that you should not believe blindly, Allah has given humans all the mental & physical faculties to think, ponder, research, and understand, and hence you can question it and you are also not supposed to trash it away instantly. The balance needs to be maintained. If one is not satisfied he must counsel people from different schools of thought until you are close to being satisfied. In the end, it alls sums up like this for me - it should not be seen as who said what but more as what was said. It will make sense and makes it easier to sift thru the infinite Hadeeths that we come across every day.

@@tonyloan512 That's not how it works.
Hadiths are a chain of multiple narrators over a couple of hundred years that relay what the original narrator allegedly heard the Prophet SAAWS say.
The Quran was "created" less than 30 years after the Prophet SAAWS 's death by collecting all the verses that were remembered by the companions and other trustworthy Muslims, and then were cross examined and compiled in to what is known as the Quran. The people who were responsible for compiling and collecting would have been trustworthy because they were closest to the Prophet, and therefore would have heard the recitations of the Prophet and known which verses were authentic and therefore should be compiled.
Is there room for scepticism in the compilation of the Quranic verses? Yes, however you would have to provide counter-evidence that the verses that were compiled at that time were not revelations of the Prophet SAAWS and that things were either left out or forgotten.

Q from a Shi’a on that last part. You said that the 12 Imams (leaders) hadith is likely a fabrication, but could it not be that Rasulullah did in fact allude to 12 leaders but the Sunnis analyse it the content through their theological perspective and rejects it based on their established world view. In other words, could Sunni biased towards the hadith be the cause of them rejecting it out of hand, particularly when they are not so dismissive of other ahadith in the Sahihatu Sitta? It does not seem far fetched that a Prophet (one capable of prophesy) would predict the emergence of these leaders does it?

    Peace everybody
The Quran is the only book Allah tells us to follow:
This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous - 2:2
Who has been granted permission to say otherwise and to follow any other books? Were they inspired? By whom? The devil?
And the only book He will preserve:
Indeed it is We who have sent down the Reminder, and indeed it is We who will preserve it - 15:9
Who can say the Quran was forged?
Allah tell us to reflect on the Quran:
Do they not reflect on the Quran If it was from any other than God they would have found it very different - 4:82
This ia a rhetorical question asking us to apply the acid test to other books (hadiths, bible...) and you will find therein many discrepancies. Have you not understand that Allah is urging us to THINK (we all have this ability) and stop being followers?
Allah tells having completed the religion during the the prophet livelihood; therefore everything else is Bidaa (addition):
Today I have perfected your system for you, and completed My blessings upon you, and I have accepted surrender as the system for you - 5:3 (part)
Who can pretend having the permission to add anything to this religion (Allah forgives such thoughts)?
    And he warns us:
And if you obey the majority of those on Earth they will lead you astray; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess - 6:116
Can you deny that the majority is following hadiths rather than Glorious Quran?
The collection of hadiths is the exact same procedures how other religion created their books.
Let us not fall into the devil's trap and look up to the Quran as the last testament preserved by Allah if you are truthful and God fearing.

Can you make a talk comparing these two traditions. (2) While we have abundance of narratives about Muhammad PBUH as recorded by Sunnis and Shias, even with their sanad (chains of narrators) and evaluation, I can't see this sanad exist in the four gospels recounting Jesus PBUH. @@fathimahmmed5293 But Muslims also do not have the original manuscripts of the Quran or the Hadiths.
Btw, the codices of Ibn Masud, and Ubay Ibn Ka’b differ from the Uthmanic codex. So which codex faithfully preserved the Quranic revelation? Before you answer, note that Mohammed is reported to have said in Bukhari “Take (learn) the Quran from four: Abdullah bin Masud, Salim, Mu’adh, and Ubai bin Ka’b”.
If you claim that the Uthmanic codex should be preferred over all other codices, how do we know that the various canonical readings of the Quran we have today do not diverge from Uthman’s Quran which we do not have? And how do they compare to Hafsa’s Quran, which predates Uthman’s?
Now Muslims want us to take their word when they tell us that the Quran has been preserved word for word and tashkil for tashkil. They claim that the Quran was mass transmitted (mutawatir) and so its preservation cannot be questioned.
But even the claim that the Quran is tawatir is disputed by some Muslim scholars. What needs to be shown is not whether the Uthmanic codex has been preserved, rather it needs to be shown that every Quranic revelation that Mohammed received has been preserved (i.e. nothing was missed in Hafsa’s and Uthman’s Quran). How can that be done when the Quran was not compiled during Mohammed’s time, and that many who had memorized the Quran died in battle of Yamama?
How can you prove this without presupposing that Islam is true? We do not have the original Quranic materials written by Mohammed’s scribes to compare because sadly, Uthman burnt early Quranic materials (fragmentary manuscripts and whole copies).
This is all to point out that in the best case scenario, Muslims can only be confident that the Uthmanic codex was preserved and then hope that his standardization of the Quran faithfully preserved all Quranic revelations.
To maintain their position, they will have to disregard reports of differences with the other codices of Masud and Ka’b. They will have to ignore the Sanaa manuscript, forgo textual criticism, and deny every Hadith that questions “The Standard Narrative”. And in the meantime, they attack the Bible.
Muslims should listen to what Ibn Umar said: “Let none of you say, ‘I have learned the whole of the Quran’, for how does he know what the whole of it is, when much of it has disappeared? Let him say, ‘I have learned what is extant thereof.’”
Your salvation is of utmost importance for you not to look into these things.

This clause “and he is a father of them”, is not found in today’s Quran. Why is that, when Mohammed said Muslims were to learn the Quran from Ubayy ibn Ka’b?

It is a great blessing of Allah upon humanity that once again, the tide of Qur'an-only followers is on the rise. Insha'Allah in a decade, more and more rejectors of hadith will come to the fore and insha'Allah the practice of following hadith for guidance will continue to diminish.
Allah has made the religion easy for the people to follow and the hadith literature, which is not sanctioned by Allah, has made the religion impossible to follow.
May Allah continue this tide and return us all to the pristine teachings of the Qur'an. Ameen

      You're dellusional.
This Ummah since the time of the sahaba has followed the Quran and the Sunnah, that will never change, you Hadith rejectors are a small tiny fringe group who are not taken seriously and never will be taken seriously.

@@mikk3150 glad to hear it. We can. Begin with some preliminary questions to understand what your starting point is.
      1. What is the status of sahih bukhari for you?
      - is it the 2nd most authentic book after the Qur'an, as scholars say?
      - do you accept ALL the ahadeeth contained in the bukhari collection or do you pick & choose?
      - what is your criteria for picking and choosing, if you do not accept all of them?
      - do you consider the bukhari collection to be revelation like the Qur'an or do you not consider it to be revelation?
Let us insha'Allah begin with these questions and then we can proceed better
Jzk kher for taking time out of your day to engage in this important discussion :)
I look forward to your replies

Sahih Bukhari is the most authentic book of hadith, all hadith in it are authentic, we do not pick and choose.
Bukhari is not revelation like the Quran, but it does contain revelation through the Prophet sallahu alayhi wassalam in his speech, his actions and what he permitted and forbade by the permission of Allah.
The Quran explicitly makes it clear Obey ALLAH, OBEY the messenger numerous times, as well as many instances of it being referenced in the Quran of the Prophet revceiving revelation that isn't actually in the Quran, like the original Qibla, the fact that angels were being sent to assist at Badr, Allah exposing the plot of two of his wives, the prohibition of the munafiqeen being able to join an expedition, and detailed instructions on how to perform salah, do Hajj and other matters.

No one has ever claimed that the hadiths were perfectly preserved as they were compiled centuries after the death of the Prophet (SAW) and all directly connected to him. That distinction only belongs to Quran.
