The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I went digging on this as I always wondered myself. Apparently the principal cast from Broadway was selected for the film, including the Broadway director, Albert Marre. Marre had never directed a film before and spent an exorbitant amount of money in pre-production that he was fired by Universal Pictures. Joan Diener (Aldonza) was married to Marre so she quit the film when Marre was fired, as did Richard Kiley. Actually, I think there’s more to this story but that’s all I could find out there. 2:48

I wonder why Richard Kiley wasn't cast in the movie version. I think he would have been a lot better. .

And Zero Mostel should have played Tevya in the movie of 'Fiddler On The Roof' . . instead of Topol (who was good) .
      BIG MISTAKE !!!

He wasn’t cast the way many Broadway actors aren’t cast in the film versions. He wasn’t a box office draw. Hollywood studios wanted insurance they would get returns. By casting an A-list cast over relatively unknown stage actors the public was more likely to come out and see the film.

He was cast in the movie (along with the original Aldonza Joan Deiner) but the two left after the stage show director Albert Marre was fired from the movie

He was planned to be cast, but they fired the original director, so every original actor (except the barber) quit in protest

I don't know the musical beyond this song and Impossible Dream, and really only know Richard Kiley from a few TV roles later in life. But he is truly something here. The real revelation, though, is Irving Jacobsen; never heard of him before, but a little Googling shows he was truly a fascinating personality.

It's amazing how Richard transforms with only a fake goatee and twirling of his hair.
