  • On January 29th 1983, three days after Paul William Bryant's passing, Alabama went to Pauley Pavilion to play No. 1 UCLA, and the 10-6 Crimson Tide came away with a 70-67 upset victory. Alabama never trailed in the game and led by as many as 16 points. Despite that, UCLA rallied back to tie the game.

No three point line. This feels wrong.

I saw this game live, on CBS, that year. It aired late. I'm a UCLA fan from #Alabama. Ennis Whatley got down.

11:30 pm Eastern Time on a Friday night, just a couple of days after Bear Bryant died unexpectedly.

I would have been 9 then. I dont remember this game but Wimp Sanderson always had teams back then capable of beating anyone but losing to anyone too. A lot of NCAA heartbreak in early rounds. Bad free throw shooting usually the culprit. But they did and many other things well in this rare matchup at famed Pauley Pavilion.

This was a great game. Huge UCLA fan here but I always liked Alabama hoops. Loved Whatley and Hurt!

What a great game. As a Bama fan I have more respect for UCLA than any program in the country and to go to Pauley and win was at that time, maybe the biggest win in Bama history. The UCLA-Bama game a couple years ago was also a classic. This Bama team also beat georgetown and Patrick Ewing. "Anymo" Whatley and Buck were a couple of those Birmingham city school kids that played back when you could pick a high school gym in B' ham and watch 2 or 3 prospects play on any night.

I had never gotten the chance to see this game until now, though I remember the total surprise of hearing the next morning that Bama had beaten UCLA at Pauley. The report I saw on TV said that a feeling of mourning for Bear Bryant was a great motivator for the Crimson Tide. Ennis Whatley was one of the great guards ever and I remember reading that the L.A. sports reporters voted his play that night the best single performance in Los Angeles in 1983 by any athlete in any sport.
