Tangmere Gets a Windy Welcome at Carlisle
Settle & Carlisle Steam Special meets the Logs
06 April 24
Storm Kathleen has been battering England with gales blowing through the Citadel station. Strong enough to blow over equipment and by evening the Avanti platform staff were minded to close off Platforms 1-3 for a while. The roof and canopies were vibrating and could possibly fly off.
In the holding sidings a West Coast Class 47 was on stand by should it be needed for route proving in southern Scotland.
It was relatively quiet train-wise at Carlisle with ASLEF drivers on strike for TransPennine and Northern. Avanti and ScotRail were running. So it was all activity when Tangmere came in from York via the WCML with Scarborough Castle at the rear. We thought that Tangmere had stopped a bit short (it had to move forward a little to clear the signals for heading to Upperby). The station stop wasn't long. Whilst it was quiet enough for the stock to remain in the station, the whole consist was taken to Upperby for servicing and turning.
Before the train headed for servicing we had the welcome sight of the Logs heading to the S&C line and on the Chirk. Its not often that it seems to run on a Saturday these days.
After a break we found Scarborough Castle hauling the Northern Belle stock and Tangmere back to the Citadel. It stayed for around 20 minutes to board its passengers before an on time departure for the S&C and York.
