Great video Maddy! I use WSL2 pretty often and it works well for me, especially for CLI tasks. Easier and quicker than trying to find windows equivalents or other solutions haha.
i've user wsl so much on the beggining of my graduation. The only thing that i needed that time was gcc, so instead of intalling a whole distro a just used wsl. I love it!!
A series where you do an intro to Docker and an intro to Podman and then show off what Distrobox can do (Distrobox can hook into either Docker or Podman) would be really cool!
Very nice, at work I use a Windows computer, I'm C# developer, but sometimes WSL with Kali are useful to reproduce some problems detected in the pentest report before fixing them, help to collect more information about the vulnerability.
oh, thanks for listing distros that I can install through wsl, I didn't know how to show that list actually, I hate there is no arch, but I belive ubuntu or debian installs without X server right?
I pray to my creator every morning to make Windows so bloated that it'll fail to run even task manager Then Linux will be saved from unholy touches of Windows
I've only had bad experiences with WSL. Tried it on old builds of win10, had to use some legacy installation. Tried it on the newest builds of win11, had some installation errors that only the forums had answers to. Call it skill issue, but WSL was marketed as easy to integrate. Just use Linux
WSL is grossly underappreciated. Next, explain the difference between WSL 1 and WSL 2, and detail the circumstances in which you'd still want to use version 1 instead of 2.
Hi Maddy, you're a big inspiration to me! How can I get into cybersecurity and hopefully get a career in the field? I know universities exist, but I'm 20 years old and affording that on my own would be incredibly difficult. Sorry for the random question lol, in no way shape or form do I want you to feel obligated to answer this, but it would be nice to have the advice of somebody in the field.
Until Maddy replies. There's three routes: Apprenticeship, Certifications or Academia. It's down to you which one you choose, they all have pros and cons of each. I believe the certification route is the easiest but the academic route opens a few more doors in certain regards. If you want more information on each route, just reply and I'll do my best to help you. If you go the certification route then tailor the certs to align with the job role you want in the cyber world, for example: security analyst - A+, Sec+ (or Cisco CyberOps) as a minimum and maybe get Net+ (or CCNA) to bolster your chances. I always find CompTIA is most cost effective.
@@xNightbound Thank you a lot for the advice I appreciate it, I think I’ll try the certificate route but also research some universities. I know this field can be very challenging, but it also seems like a highly rewarding career.
i just did the same thing like a week ago but hadn't used it until today as i was like there's no way i'm turning my pc off. you should check out tails operating system for a video that'd be cool, try to give it persistence... then disappear like a ghost... like ghost in the shell. that'd be so cool...
WSL2 is a great project, but it also has lots of issues my experience, even though it's getting better. Many things break or have extremely low performance. Most important question for me is still how much better it is than just regular virtual machines, since it's based on Hyper V technology. It's really those things related to integrating with the host system and which are actually difficult to setup for a normal VM. They should become super easy. But a lot of improvement still needs to be done in my experience. However, it Cannot and Will Not replace desktop Linux or any kind of dual boot setup however. They should never sell it like that to you. It's just for the situations that you use Windows, especially when also doing software development under Windows, and you want to quickly access Linux specific things. By the way, really I hope your monitor resolution was a lot better than the one used for this video. Just a note.
not entirely sure curl would be a good example for this seeing as it runs on windows natively. same with docker. wsl has always slowed my machines down to basically unusable levels (thanks M$). for the ease and speed of use not to mention peace of mind i'll use a spare machine at the house or a $5/month VPS
It works amazingly. If you want and need Linux but don't want to boot it rach time, then it's a great tool. I'm mainly a Windows user, I program in both windows and Wsl this saves me a lot of time and I can have the best of two worlds.
Many of us run Linux to forget about the abomination Windows has turned into. To avoid a bloated, expensive operating system that spies on you. Others use it because it is better than the alternatives. Running Linux under Windows (and I mean the spyware s#it called Windows 10, 11 and above...) seems to me a little absurd. Why would you do that? Need to learn linux? Just use virtual machines with proper linux on them. Or just boot into Linux directly.
It's useful for devs to have the best of both worlds, and even for learning it's fine up to a point (with WSL you just learn a few commands, not Linux itself if you don't install and tinker and destroy actual installations on hardware/VMs). When you work and you need certain dev tools specifically for windows, but you still need access to GNU tools, run make builds, script in bash, and so on...
Easy: I want to use cygwin and not have to pull out my hair because of microsoft crufty shell. I also am not going to give up developing for a platform just because I don’t like it. Heck, I think the opposite. Would I develop for Mac if I had one? Heck yeah! But I dont. I am 95% of the time on Linux. And when I am on Windows, it is for serious work. Answers like “just use a VM” is not convenient for all users and developers. I hope you understand now, because it really isn’t that complicated. I recommend WSL if you are just wanting to share tools. I recommend VMs if you want to try a tool. The two are vastly different use cases.
Very nice of Microsoft to give people ways to get used to Linux before getting rid of Windows
that's exactly what i did lol
fr, good marketing.

Even though I have no idea what you're doing most of the time, I still watch every video to the end
I love it when the OS allows you to draw with the mouse pointer. :)

What draw my attention was the trollface in 2024. God bless who appreciate old memes and keep releasing interesting content on this platform🙏🏻
hey i'd love to see a deep dive into that!
wsl seems neat, i've never heard of it
For training purpose I use Linux like that, sometimes I run in VirtualBox. Thanks Maddy. Greetings from Brazil.
Your my favorite asmr channel
Loved your video was quite helpful 💪💪
Yes please and thank you. Intro to docker using WSL
Next Video: Windows inside Linux inside Windows on Linux
orange cat on the computer 👍
Didn't know about the `wttr.in` thing! I'll have to keep that in mind if I'm already in a terminal and don't want to open up a weather app.
She reminds me Lenore from Netflix Castlevania.

Just use Linux
Skill issue. I've even before WSL2 it was an excellent product for those of us who work in the real world and not in the Linux zealot fantasy land.
wsl is nice for using emacs on windows because the windows version is kinda funky
Great video Maddy!!
Thanks
wsl is the first thing to do on windows 😅
That tux on the thumbnail, lol
This is real!!!!wtf it works. She's a mega cute nerd. Thank for sharing this with us.

wsl eats my RAM for some reason, i hope you get better luck
Can you try John the ripper with gpu support here and if it works make a tut😊

Does the install command you used download WSL 2? Ive read for docker you need wsl version 2

dont bother, the voices will never stop.

I use arch, no, I use ubuntu, nah, I'm Windows user, I use WSL btw.
With wsl enabled, the system becomes too bloated. I prefer cygwin or virtual machines.
Yes please a Intro to docker!
Docker and Kubernetes is where its at. I don't like managing dependencies in Python

why? sometimes doesnt have to boot linux on to you're machine. Because, GPU doesn't very fit in linux distros like nvidia.

This is mainly for people who work in tech where mostly will be given windows work laptops, for hobbyists yes it’s not as useful.
