    I'm new to customizing horses and this - like the coloring vids - helps a lot. One question though: wouldn't it safe a lot of work/time to make the tail shape out of PVC (from an old shampoo or dish soap bottle) instead of cardboard wrapped in glued tape?

    • @DeeJayBeStudios
      @DeeJayBeStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be a similar technique. I would recommend reinforcing it with wire, insert several wire bits from the neck, then add blue tape and shape to your desire. Add super glue and baking soda to make it firm. Sculpt your hair detail on top.

    How did you get the original mane and tail off? A dremel? :o

    • @DeeJayBeStudios
      @DeeJayBeStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pulled most of the original mane off with pliers, and a mini hacksaw for the tail. The Dremel also works well for this, sanding down the leftover bits. I have a tutorial on this coming soon :)

    • @caballuscollecting
      @caballuscollecting 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeeJayBeStudios I imagine using pliers and a hacksaw wouldn't be too effective on a stablemate haha I think I might just invest in Dremel! Thanks for the swift reply!

    • @DeeJayBeStudios
      @DeeJayBeStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caballuscollecting I actually prefer using the hacksaw in most cases, as it is more precise for cuts. Takes a little more effort for sure, but I find I hit places I don't want with the Dremel... However a Dremel is a great investment for fast sanding- smoothing down the cut the hacksaw makes and removing detail, even ears on a Stablemate. For sure!

  • @chriswarrior7385
    @chriswarrior7385 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a few older models in which I don't like the mane and would like to add onto what is there. Do you recommend sanding down the color? Or can I just add on top of what is there already? In other words is there any prep needed on the original mane to add to it?

    • @DeeJayBeStudios
      @DeeJayBeStudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can lightly sand it so the clay has something to stick to. But the colour does not matter, no. Unless it’s been with acrylic and has sealer. Then it must be stripped

    • @DeeJayBeStudios
      @DeeJayBeStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to use either Apoxie or Magic Sculpt. Other/cheaper clays do not behave in the same ways. Apoxie comes in small quantities. You can buy 1/4 of a pound to try it out. It is only about $15 on Amazon. I have links in my description.

    • @shelbysargent4171
      @shelbysargent4171 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use Free Form Sculpt from Smooth-on and it is perfect. You have about an hour's working time, depending on the temp and humidity, and it is set up in 2-3 hours. It smooths very nicely with a tool dipped in water. I've tried all the epoxy and apoxie's out there and I find this to work best for me. It costs about $27 for a trial size which is 3 lbs of clay. It's a two part epoxy that is mixed 1:1 by volume. I have sculpted a 1:6 scale horse, a 1:9 Scale horse and still have enough left for fixes or touch-ups. It also doesn't shrink or crack with time and age as many do. Good luck with your sculpting. KAT (The Perfect Pony Collection)

    Will crayola clay work? For the mane an tail?

    • @DeeJayBeStudios
      @DeeJayBeStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Air dry clay has a tendency to crack and crumble as they are not made to be durable for projects such as this. A two part resin based product will obviously give better results. All I can say is try, even if for the practice - a cheaper brand of clay could be useful. If you are customizing for fun, it just might work for your shelf piece models!
