  • Welcome to Episode 36 of Carpe Diem Sailing. In this video I talk about the magnetic compass and how to convert bearings from true to magnetic and vice versa. I also talk about deviation, what a deviation table is and how to apply deviation to magnetic bearings to determine ca course to steer.

    Thank you. Not to forget the possible influence of spectacle frames on the handheld compass that can also contribute to deviation.

      Thank you RH. That is such a good point. Years ago I had a student who could not get the bearing right and no-one could understand it. Finally it dawned on me out of the blue. I asked him to take off his glasses and I held them next to the compass and it deviated by 30 degrees. I totally forgot about that till you brought it up. Thanks for bringing it up.

    In the chart what was the last column used for? The E/W column.

    • @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
      @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing. It is only there to serve as a reminder to subtract east and add west when converting from true to compass. I will amend the form in my shownotes to remove the column but I will leave the reminder at the top.

    Hi Marco, Why not round up the 2°24’ variation to 2.5°? This would mean only discounting 6’ of variation as opposed to 24’ by rounding it down to just 2°. Surely it would be more accurate?

    • @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
      @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Smithers1250. Yes it would be more accurate but this would be purely theoretical as the instruments on a typical yacht are not calibrated finely enough to take advantage of half a degree. So it is simply a matter of simplifying and working within the capacity of the instruments.

      @@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine Then why bother correcting 2 degrees anyway?

    hello i was thinking of buying a repro ship gimbal compass antique brass reproduction from india. and i wanted to just use it just to do simple compass experiments.and i wanted to know does it have to have compass fluid or can it be used without it? thanks Richard

    • @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
      @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Richard. Technically you can but it takes much longer for the compass card to stop swinging. The fluid creates friction which dampens the swing of the card.
